Relationship Note on Mirari

I was advised that the way to accumulate wealth is not to spend every silver you have.

It seems so tedious, like waiting and you know I hate waiting.

I'll give it a try though. I may need you to forcibly cut me off. Ban me from your shop?

Nonono Don't. I should at least be able to browse a little or else I'll truly suffer.

I wish I could have stayed at the masked ball a bit longer. I'm such a fan of masquerades, perhaps because they are among our favorite celebrations in the Lyceum.

I wasn't sure if I could attend until the last minute, which meant I scrambled for an appropriate costume. This alone should have been a sign, I hate any event where I don't feel perfectly put together.

The time I attended I enjoyed, it was a feast for the senses, the animals in the menagerie and the animals in costume, and wine, lights, dancing...beautiful. It was just /such/ a feast for the senses that I may have overindulged, for I was swaying and longing for my bed.

Next time, pace yourself Roxy.

Last night's ball at the Menagerie was simply amazing! There were so many glorious masks and fascinating costumes and people really used their imagination for many of them! The dragon that won the costume contest absolutely should have--she was simply stunning! It made me very glad I had chosen to not go as a dragon, which I had initially planned! As it was, Prince Niklas and I won the dancing competition and then I came in second in the costume contest! I must thank Mistress Petal for bringing my Moon gown creation to life! It was absolutely everything I'd imagined and she took my scrawled designs and made them real and I could not be more delighted! Or happier with the two pretty rings I now have.

I have been very anxious every time I have to go outside without my bandages on. I am very grateful to the people who interact with me as if I do not have a healing cut on my face and treat me as they always have. The masquerade allowed me to do so and relax and I honestly had a great time! Thank you, Duke Aiden, for hosting yet again and I look forward to next year!

We didn't have many peacocks in Stormward, but a rarely told story about my father, the late Marquis Denholm Kennex, has him going out to shoo some geese from his back patio when he was a boy. He had been eating breakfast and when he dropped his bread he was then swarmed by the geese who buffeted him with their wings, knocking him over, then tore at his skin with their serrated beaks. To his dying day he bore goose scars on his legs and arms.

As children Renny and I would beg him to tell that story because it was so funny.

He never laughed, though. Just got this look in his eyes.

Never saw a goose he didn't go out of his way to kill.

Just stick to your blacks, my Liege.

Half of them write about half as well as they think and more than half of them write half more than they should.

The Masquerade was a teeming mass of fur, feathers, and colour. I was the only snake. I am, of course, the Nightingale again today.

There were some truly lovely prizes; it was almost enough to make me wish for a dance partner, though as I said at the time, my dress was really not made for dancing. I would have been crushed by the competition anyway.

Many of the costumes were beautiful and inspiring; I particularly liked one of the peacocks, and the fawn gown was very interesting. I am adding my serpent gown to my regular wardrobe. I've been dying to ever since I lucked into it.

The other day, I heard that Cristoph wished that someone in the family spoke Oathlands Shav. And I thought 'What a wonderful idea.' I've always had an interest in words and language and since I returned to the city, I've kept running into Prodigals as if it were a sign from Limerance that this is what I needed to do.

None of the Prodigals spoke Oathlands Shav though but then I heard word of a raffle of cloaks - cloaks designed by the Prodigal seamstress I just ordered some clothes from - and the person to contact was a Lady of the Greenmarch family. Greenmarch, a family of Prodigals from the Oathlands. Definitely a sign.

I met with Lady Monique to buy some raffles and she kindly agreed to teach me to speak Oathlands Shav. I feel like that's just the first step though and I've decided to learn to speak the Shav languages of the Northlands, the Crownlands and the Isles as well. I'm sure that with the help of Limerance, I'll be able to pick them up quickly to be able to benefit my House.

Your sister is wise for her concern. It is a scarcely known fact that peacocks are dangerous beasts.

When I was a boy my oldest brother, Prince Vance would tell me tales of when the would encounter "trap door peacocks" when the once stumbled into thier hunting grounds. He said they would ambush from perfectly camoflaged pits, eat a hunters liver and then disappear into the maze of caverns they dig.

Truly terrifying stuff and I have avoided the birds and thier distracting plumage ever since!

I have said this before.

Have an assistant who brings you the journals of the 400 or so most interesting people in the city.

It doesn't take up more than fifteen to twenty minutes of my time every day, really. And if I check on their updates once every couple of hours I barely even notice the time spent.

This is something I might gamble you would not hear:

“I was beset by dragons, lovely, glorious and fearsome...but really...it was the peacock that gave me the greatest concern.”

I am sure my sister, Miranda, got no end of amusement at the Masquerade last evening...partly at my expense.

All I can say is that I have stated may times I am not a peacock, but my sister apparently is... and a very good one at that, taking a runner-up spot for best costume. A hell of a debut, if I say so, myself.

Sometimes, in Arx, it feels to me that there are more people than stars. Objectively I know this to be untrue but feelings rarely follow absolute truth and tonight, it felt like all the stars in the firmament were collected in the Menagerie.

On a sidenote, a heavenly menagerie would be breathtaking, wouldn't it? How does one craft a habitat for comets? What is the ideal bedding material for a star? What do suns eat, and what tonics do you give them when they're ailing? Oh, I need to look at the heavens more often. What a precious world we live in.

But back to the original point of my taking quill in hand. There were very many people at the masquerade tonight and at first I thought I'd made a mistake in going (probably not a wise thing for a Whisper to admit in public but there it is, the truth -and- my feelings) but then a stranger petitioned for someone to dance with his friend, and I needed a dance partner as well, and we almost won the entire competition! I feel compelled to mention here, on the heels of my heavenly menagerie idea, that it was the masked sun and moon who did win the thing.

Coincidence? I think -not-.

Congratulations to our celestial victors, and a grateful kiss blown right from my ink-stained fingers to these people in order: the bull who was my dancing partner, the silver wolf who made it possible for us to pair up, the artisans who made such exquisite prizes, and whomever was brave and wonderful enough to decide to attend as a sad-face stump.

You, sir or madam, are the true winner, I think we can all agree.

It is Vellichor's charge to us to record our lives within the Whites, that future generations might remember, and that knowledge of what has passed will not be lost. It is up to each of us to decide what we consider important enough to transcribe within these pages. It is all sacred and recorded, and entrusted to our care as Scholars.

I imagine in the future that, in the midst of all the trials and tribulations we may face, some might find a hint of levity and frivolity in our lives as well. We live a colorful existence, and each one of us has a unique perspective. Three people in a room might look at a vase of flowers and see three different things. One might see the vase, the way it is shaped, the patterns on the porcelain; another might see it for the flowers, their beauty, the spray of color; while others might note the play of light and shadow upon both vase and flower. Yet, each one sees the same vase of flowers. Such is it with our lives.

The Whites allow us a glimpse into the lives of each other, into our thoughts, musings, hopes, dreams, troubles, adventures and yes, even the bits of flavor that may seem meaningless to some, but important for others. We share the same Dream, but we envision it differently. We Scholars consider it our sacred obligation to record these things for posterity. There are forces in this world which would squelch our voices. They would see us silenced, and see knowledge lost. We have forgotten things before... important things, and so this is why we record even the tiniest shred of what anyone wishes to share about their lives. That future generations may look back, and see the different facets of our existence.

One day I will understand why we bother writing such worthless shit in these journals, and why we feel the need to reply to the aforementioned shit with worse.

It's madness. Oh, I'm aware of the precepts and all, but I cannot imagine anyone in 1000 years wanting to read most of this.

The worst part is that people must be spending hours reading random journals. Do none of them have jobs? If I didn't have to write here, I wouldn't. I have shit to do.

Literally every garment I brought along on that trip has been soaked through in blood, the smell of smoke from burning books wreathes around me, my abdominal muscles ache from too much laughter, my sword arm is nearly numb.

Life back in Arx seems so sleepy in comparison. I watch the trees, waiting to see who is hiding in them, and am disappointed to find that it is only squirrels, insects and bark. When I hear giggling and draw my rapier, the innocent children walking by run, instead of enacting their attempt on my life - or to try to get my autograph (let's face it - usually both). There are no traps on my door waiting to slice off my leg so that someone can have a souvenir, there is no fifteen minutes back and forth riddle contest to get myself a loaf of bread, there's no bundle of spider eggs hidden inside the loaf of bread, there are no statues of air or signs warning of my hilarious and horrific death, and blood magic is oh so rare.

My work continues to be here, but -

Can I really say it's good to be back?

Word has reached the Palace Courts of the enjoyment and enchantment of a successful masquerade. However, there is one bit of news, which I must amend as there was a misunderstanding with the delivery of the donated prize ring.

I wish to thank and express my gratitude to Grandmaster Joscelin and her team at the Crafter's Gallery for work with me on the design of the ring. When I arrived with ideas for this donation, I knew I could count on her and her team to take such a seed of a dream to nurture and blossom the dream to one of inspiration and beauty.

Thank you for your extraordinary talent in not only spinning and deftly twisting metal and stone, but acutely able to manage a customer and harvest her dream. You are quite blessed by Jayus.
