I haven't felt much like getting out, lately. Autumn's here, that's why. It was good to see the finale ball for the Taste of Arx celebration, though.

It doesn't hurt that the company was good. Some people have a way of breathing life into a hundred different topics over the course of an evening.

I'm envious. It's not a skill I ever mastered.

Prince Victus really nailed it at the Assembly of Peers.

Relationship Note on Carita

Why don't crabs have eyebrows? Mangata took them away because they were irresponsible with them.

My protege's daughter spent some time with me while her mother was in Maelstrom. Not all of it, otherwise I might not have survived. I never realized a child could have so many questions in them as Nerissa Darkwater does. I started running out of real answers long before she started running out of hard questions. In the end, I turned the tables on her and started asking the questions. I'm a wiser man now than I was before.

Did you know owls are not turtles? It means they're active at night. I have it on good authority.

She was rather taken with the large painting of Queen Alarice astride a golden-feathered griffin. Questions about Alarice were mostly easier to answer than questions about griffins, though we did make the attempt to hunt one down in the mansion. I thought for sure there would be at least one hiding somewhere, under a bed perhaps or in the kitchens. Alas.

After she was gone, I searched the wine cabinets in a last ditch effort. No griffins, either, but I found some memories worth keeping.

Against all odds, I didn't miss the opening night for the Good Duke of Gemecitta.

Could you believe the music? The Nightingale of the Bard's College really outdid herself!

I heard she wrote the whole thing. Astounding.

I told you so.

It's been interesting fostering this child for Prince Ainsley until a real parent can be found, that much is certain. He's going by Lord Doom this week, but I'm absolutely sure he'll be back to Carter next week. Absoooooolutely sure.

I can't tell if I'm supposed to shove my interests on him or let him develop his own. I keep discreetly watching other parents out in public and it's about half and half for people voting by example, unbeknownst to them. Ainsley said the kid's a biter so I bet he'd be a good swordsman. I'm a good swordsman, and I'm a biter.

Relationship Note on Oswyn

I had the most unexpected student, this week. Scholar Oswyn came to me for help in getting a better range of motion out of his movements, particularly around the legs. Great with theories, but the execution could use a little work. But then, that's what I'm for. Amazing what a few hours of dancing around cats can do for a person's natural grace.

The Lazy Afternoon Catnap and Research group was an amazing success. I came away with one great answer and even more questions, like why are felines so endlessly fascinating, and whose hands were those?

Who knew that an afternoon catnap and research gathering could prove to be so relaxing and informative?

I did. That's why I started it. And what a turnout!

I'm in my territory.

So there I was, writing missives to be sent off, when I heard a ruckus from outside the study.

It turns out one of the serving staff had been feeling a bit under the weather and tried some cinnamon based on a physician's recommendation.

I thought the stuff was for food, but I guess if you swallow a bunch of it, you stop caring about getting sick very quickly.

I'm always amazed by our advances in medicine. I topped the man off with a glass of wine.

Relationship Note on Carita

Traditionally, I never really think about sitting and writing at length in my white journal, but I felt moved to record my protege's noble sacrifice. I know all too well of the plight of the former Countess, Venta. The desire to retire to a beach is very strong. I quite literally dropped my wine when I heard Countess Carita had taken on the burden and let Venta off to go do as she wishes.

I'm exceedingly proud of her. I always tell her, do as I say, not as I do. That's really taking her far!

I'm confident the new Countess has what it takes to see through the work she started as a Voice, which has already been considerable.

The art of investigation and the study of the esoteric often draw bright minds.

Personally, I'm flabbergasted that smart people don't want to rush toward a chance at death.

Have you asked High Lord Victus Thrax for his secret? No few showed up the last time he promised a high chance of death for doing 'the right thing'.

Relationship Note on Ida

I spent a good part of this morning going through and seeing to the cleaning of my blade collection. Well. Giuseppe helped. Or maybe he did most of the work and I drank. But I /was/ there for it. And awake.

Anyway, my point is, I noticed I now own eleven pieces of Dame Ida Ferron's fine craftsmanship. Not that I am complaining. They look beautiful, and they're more than just easy on the eyes, too. I should know. I'm nearly considering getting a separate display case for her work. To paw through it would be a journey of white dragon hilts spewing forth flames down blades, regal griffins washed in sunset copper, a weapon that evokes the wings of ravens against silver moonlight, breeze-blown autumn foliage and glistening sunshine on winter pines between two different longswords. That's less than half of them!

..maybe I'll have Giuseppe commission a second display case.
