There was a knock
Upon my door
And upon my stoop
There stood the Gods
Cloaked, as I
In Superstition
Cloaked as I
In Desire

But I, being sound
Did so say "Why,
Why do you stand
Thus on my stoop?"

"We come today
To tell you how
How to be
How to act
We come today
To share with you
The things to do
To live and love
To clash and cry
And eventually die."

"All this
And all in service
To you, and you, and you?"

"All in service to life."

"And what is life?"

"Life is love."

"And what is love?"

"Love is work."

"Why then
Would I submit
To the labor of love
In service to you
In service to life?"

"Because it is right."

"What is right?"

"Right is not wrong."

"What then is wrong?
Who chooses
The morality
Who chooses
The stance
Who chooses
The rules?"

"We do."
But it was not the Gods
Who spoke
But the air behind them
The collective
More than a God
More powerful than any Mirror
The collective
Has the power
To ostracize
And cripple
And tear down
The Gods
And break
The mirror.

Not for lack of trying, on anybody's part. Life will out, unfortunately.

I heard his penis is small. I would very much like to examine that symptom more closely.

The smartest person in the room, except when you're not. Lost a lot of faith in him recently. Hopefully he can work to get it back.

Relationship Note on Orazio

There is no such thing as atheism when the Gods speak in your head and magic is real.

I just have a practiced indifference to Them and Their machinations. I would explain why, and how, but quite honestly it would be akin to yelling into an empty bucket. That's just not pleasing to me. Considering your position in life, I think you are more than a little predisposed towards unquestioning love for Them. So why bother? But consider this: is it wise to worship some entity who cannot even keep their own Reflection in check? Do you really think these powerful beings, beings who can shape the very Fabric we breath every day, who can pierce the Veil and bend it to their will, have your best interests at heart?

I would love to debate you on the subject, priest. Father. Legate. Whatever you are -- I don't have a degree in theology, I have a degree in alchemy. A much more worthwhile pursuit. You have but to pick a time and a place of your choosing.

----

Alas, this brings up a concerning trend: people pretending to know me. Or speak for me. Don't do it. I am from Tor, where Thralldom is illegal -- I wish I the scholar recording this could appropriately record the sarcastic clapping of my hands right now. Because my fellows consider something illegal, that does not mean that it is wrong. It only means that somebody, somewhere, with enough power, decided to make it so. I'm not inclined to trust people that aren't me. Therefore, do you really think I give a Gods damned fucking wit about what people in my homeland think of Thralldom?

----

I am not crazed. If you want to see crazy, you really should come by the Asylum sometime. It will provide you some much needed... perspective. I'll do tours, for ten thousand coins a piece. Consider it my blue-blood discount.

Faith is just slavery with another name.

Being embraced by it after I die? Well, that's just shite. Can you talk to Her about that? Maybe ask Her to make an exception, and ignore me?

How soft the snow does fall
Soft and still
Beauty serene
But you, princess
Are more beautiful yet.
Your hair tumbles,
Freshly spun
Your eyes glisten
Mirth untold
Were I a different man
Would it were
I'd marry you for sure.

I'm a better composer than a poet, but there you have it. My heart on a page. She's so perfect. I would kill a God for her. I'm head over heels madly in love.

I'm sorry, I didn't know that there was any choice aside from joining the Compact. What do you think, exactly, happens to those shavs who people war against when they don't bend the knee and declare for the King? They are killed.

Is it hard being so naive? I'm really wondering.

I would insult the King himself if I thought it would do him good.

For now, I guess I'll have to stick to sending this scholar to insult you. Literally Geoff. I'm writing down a piece of paper now -- you go send this fucking scrap of parchment to this Merek idi-- are you writing? I'm not doing a white journal anymore -- go!

Sidenote: Homeless people in Maelstrom are also at an all-time low due to vast quantities of 'fish-demons' so people say, so there's that as well. Hope you're doing something about that, instead of ARGUING with a PHILOSOPHER about THINGS.

Slavery? Thralldom is not slavery. Thralldom is debt. Thralldom is a way to allow commoners into the grand halls of lords and ladies, provide them beds they would not otherwise have because of the enormous debt they might pay. Let me ask you this, do you see many homeless people in Maelstrom? Why do you think that is? Because the ones who are are usually cozied up somewhere nice, warm and safe, working off their debts -- not out in the street, begging for money or a job with which they might pay back those debts.

Leona Thrax, it reads here. Are you sure about that last part, Dame?

On Thralldom:

Why is everyone so adamant about stopping thralldom? Why must it come to a close? The economical benefits are numerous, and the morality of it is delightfully justified. In my opinion, spread it far and wide! Let those debtors do some service for the greater good of progress! And what of their children, you ask? Well, I inherited my mother's bad health. They can inherit their families crippling debt.

Gerald, why does everyone record these as if we aren't speaking to one of you? To one of the scholars? Do people write their own White Journals? My handwriting is horrible -- can I even write in anything but code anymore? Who knows.

-------------

Do I need to explain the size of the ocean to her? Or the fact that the person who sees an enemy first is usually the one who gets the advantage in position regardless of if they know they are coming or not? I really don't know, Gerald. If the shade of ignorance is really that bad... Gerald, I want every white journal with the word pink in it. Every one! This will be my new project! Camouflage, after all, is a tool. Why wouldn't we use tools? SOCIAL CONSTRUCTS -- put that in huge writing, Gerald. Gods, your handwriting is genuinely beautiful. You look like my father. Are you single?

You referred to your ship as a "pink ship". Specifically. A pink ship.

I hope you can see my confusion, Princess.

----------

Sidenote to others: As a matter of fact, I will have the scholars write whatever I damn well please in this journal. It's my journal. You're the one specifically going to the depository and asking to read the White Pages of a common commoner. This is my place to vent after a long day in the laboratory, working away at solutions to problems that would confound the minds of lesser beings, quite possibly to the point of complete mental shutdown and failure. Good Gods, don't they know that? Don't they?

Sidenote sidenote: Prepare tests to test mental stress relative to mental shutdown. No, don't write that! Wait - no, write it - it's important. Write all of it. Every syllable preserved in time for Vellichor!

Relationship Note on Reese

As a self-proclaimed "man of fucking science" and studious scholar of societal norms, I have come to a consensus.

Pink is a stupid color for a ship. Not because it is a lesser color; no color is lesser than another, and it would take decades of very streamlined one-sided advertisement, marketing, and convincing by a large group of people with the single-minded idea of oppressing a group to make money to make a color be seen as lesser. I myself own a wonderful pair of spotted pink underwear and feel no shame in sharing that fact.

Pink is a stupid color because it makes you stand out on the water from across an entire Gods damned ocean, putting your entire crew at risk, and the Compact itself if the mission you're on is actually important to the world-ending crises that await us. Not to mention the inconclusive results concerning long-term tests of paint solubility in open ocean salt water. Your ship very well could rot away.

Good luck helping, Princess. Gods speed.

Please note that the scholars may take some time preparing your journal for others to read.
