Relationship Note on Emily

I dreamt earlier of treetops. That you and I had become monkeys and had a competition to see who could swing the furthest between branches. We both fell into a pile of leaves a giggling mess.

At the moment I wish I was a giggling money mess leather than a weak invalid being watched over by the fun guards.

Oh boy...so there was drinking. It's fine, there's always drinking. And then there was dancing, then there was showing off dancing, and then there was 'why don't I go out with the rangers into the forest.' Because...Gild knows I have the survival skills of a peanut. But no, we'll just go traipse along with the rangers. <<Every stupid thing a man does is usually to impress a girl>> So said my father. Good job proving him right...-again-. Still...it was a nice walk home. Best part of an amazing party. Bar none. Now I'm going to sleep and ignore the sound of my father in my head just laaaaaaughing.

It's quite fortunate that she decided to remain as part of the House and did not run off to be with the Lycene potted plant.

Small victories are still victories.

Too bad I'm so stubborn. Don't worry, I will let you take me to all the scary places in the woods to get my heart racing too.

That is all you have to do. Try. I am fairly certain that the ferocity of the waters of Bisland pond are greatly exaggerated. In any case, it's not like you will be alone. Water and I have a long standing relationship. I'll just tell it to be nice to you.

Relationship Note on Emily

A good commander always tries to bring back all their people, and rarely will. That's the bloody business.

And a good commander can't hesitate to spend their people, when needs be. Being over cautious can lose a battle, let your enemy take the initiative, wind up a slaughter. Can't lead folk to war without being ready to send them out where you know there's no coming back.

Hell of a business, all told.

A private exchange was made in a personal letter. Allow me to make my views public, now.

You represented yourself, your House, and our people well. I'm sure there will be many stepping up to volunteer for the future of Old Oak's martial forces with you as their inspiration.

Consider my pride in your achievements public knowledge.

Relationship Note on Emily

Have you ever heard of David Stockton from Blancbier? Fanciful, vivid man. What he lacked in common sense he made up for in creativity. The man could talk your ear off, and then start working on the other one. He wanted to be a Scholar of Vellichor. As he begun his training, he struggled. For as verbose and experienced as he was with both the written and spoken word, he couldn't find the rhythm of putting down the words of others to parchment. It shouldn't be hard, you'd think. But he just found his concentration drifting, the style of his letters and words sloppy.

One evening as I was listening to his laments, the poor fellow clearly uncertain what to do, I turned to him and I said, "David. Your problem is you aren't writing for yourself. The stories you have to share with the world aren't the ones you write for others, but the ones in your mind. The world will be richer for reading your thoughts and ideas, not from how well you pen with quill the voices of the people who need a scribe." Six months later, as I'd moved on in my travels, a messenger found me. Gave me a book. I lost all track of time that evening, turning from page to page, so vivid was the fictional narrative laid out before me. The author? David Stockton.

It's a rare gift to read the written word that makes us lose track of time. Keep writing, Lady Darkwood, regardless of your other pursuits.

Relationship Note on Emily

The cadet branch Deepwoods have been a lovely addition to my family. Thus far, the one I know best has come to be Lady - no, Cousin Emily. She has made herself essential to both myself and to Rymarr, and holds the interests of our House within her heart. I've spent more than one evening thus far enjoying her company and hope to enjoy many more.

She is traveling to the north to lead Deepwood's forces in defense of Stormwall, and is being mentioned frequently in my prayers. But more importantly, I will support her with my actions as her forces fly the banner of three trees.

Relationship Note on Emily

I've been honored to become better acquainted with Lady Emily Deepwood over the past week. We spoke about ways I might aid in drilling her rangers, and other matters of military training. And, more lightly, I had much fun in the party she helped host at the Deepwood Manor. I managed to come in first in the skating race she hosted. I wasn't sure about those bladed things at first, but they're very good for speed, and I may attempt to incorporate blades into my daily travels somehow. It is good to see House Deepwood strengthened by good allies like this, and I hope we'll have many chances to work together in the future.

Went to the Deepwood Shindig with Caspian and had a blast. Lady Emily was so kind to send me a personal invite it was nice to see her after her joining the Explorers. Hopefully we'll get to hang out more.....she's a blast....even after causing me to have sand in my hair and armor but all in good fun!

Three out of three. Nicely done. Considered a riddle contest? Many fancy gatherings I've been to seem to have liked those, although I fear the answers to my questions were perhaps a touch obvious. Then again, so were the riddles.

From shop help to Training Center, the Lady Deepwood has been intelligent and enjoyable company. With plenty of humor, it helps to break the monotony of the work day, and I can see that she will grow in skill with the blade I crafted for her. Now to earn my silvers and continue the design on this rubicund bow.

Relationship Note on Emily

My sister seems thrilled to be in Arx -- there are no end of other explorers and travelers to speak with, to trade stories with, and I gather there's even an entire /Society/ of them that she plans to join, at Samantha's urging. I'm so happy for her that she's found her kindred spirits, though I can't help but worry -- I understand some of their number have died in recent excursions, or gone missing.

If childhood tales truly /are/ real now, as some keep telling me, it seems that those who explore the world would be on the front lines even more than we soldiers ever might.
