Relationship Note on Aureth

I love you, brother. I want to say you became real, but you were always real. If you'd stayed reading cards for nobles, you would have still been real, gods, I miss those days, is it so strange? But look how you've flown. Remember all you've seen. What wonders we've experienced together. Stay alive, if you can. Help ensure Arx rebuilds, Arvum rebuilds, and that there's a place for rapscallions to read cards. That there's a place for rapscallions to grow into their wild dreams and past them. And if I make it back, if we both make it, let's just -- look into still pools of water in bowls again. For the old times.

Relationship Note on Aureth

A chance encounter with the Dominus of the Faith led to my being inspired by his example, mainly to consider my relationship to the Gods of the Pantheon, and in so doing, better understand them and myself.

It is an exercise that will take time, for while answers easily leap to mind for some of the Gods, they often change as I consider them for longer, until they're revealed to be but just a small aspect of the whole answer.

I can understand the ascetic seeking distance from the distractions of the mundane world to focus entirely upon finding these answers. Yet I believe that in doing so, in cutting off the rest of the world in all its complexity, one loses much of the complexity associated to the Gods and the many ways they've shaped our world and the people that fill it.

Then again, I am no Godsworn, nor a devotee who could claim having spent years studying theology. Merely a man musing over entities by far his greater, wondering at their mysteries.

While every man needs a hobby, I am puzzled by the Dominus' choice. Still, I suppose avidly following the life of the now Lady Emberly Crovane offers a nice change of pace from the matter of heretics and their rival Dominus.

The weather is getting HOTTER scholar and the people are getting tense. It isn't their fault, really! Times are hard. But the good news?! A new--Dominus was found. That's good right? I think so. I mean I'm still learning, but that's good! Oh wait! I'm forgetting something.

CONGRATULATIONS Dominus Aureth. That's the right title, yeah?

A new Dominus has been chosen. Dominus Aureth has a lovely ring to it.

I cannot say we've spoken often, and likely he doesn't recall much of it. But I am quite grateful for the conversations we have had. I hope I might consider him a friend. In this time of difficulty, it cannot be so easy to make such choices. May the gods guide and smile upon you.

Well done, my friend.

I tend to use 'snowballs' or 'son of a motherless bear,' but I suppose those are more expletives than things I say specifically for nonsense. My father used 'bearshit' often, and would laugh or roll his eyes after saying it - sometimes both!

Truly, I have the greatest patron that a sailor could ask for.

All the wealth I have has been facilitated by the Legate Cousin's warm words and excellent teachings.

His approval of my latest acquisition means the world to me.

It is a kind offer, Father, but I think the Faith supplies me with sufficient coin to purchase something. It is just slightly odd. Rarely do I buy things for myself. My swords are to defend others - and of the two the one that was purchased was purchased by the then Dominus. My armour was jointly funded by myself and by then-Father Orazio from the Faith funds, as I needed it for missions of the Faith. I purchased some of Dame Ida's fantastic work, but as a gift for another.

I do not know when last I purchased something like this. Because of it, I would rather it be personal - I have some ideas for colours. I may even venture beyond white and gold. Perhaps.

It becomes easier as one begins to recognize the writing styles of the more popular scribes. Personally, I have only requested that Atreke write my journals for me when I have been incapable of doing so myself. There is something sacred to me in the act of putting quill to vellum--as though with each scratch of quill on parchment I am making a sacrifice to Lord Vellichor, consecrating each word with every stroke of the pen.

This feeling of consecration is, at times, all that has held me back from utter ruin.

Doubtlessly such an admission will prove alarming to those who have read the more emotional of my writings.

That is a very compelling subject, and your question sent my mind immediately seeking an answer for such a quandary.

I think, were I charged with the task of eulogizing someone who embraced a way of life that I found personally abhorrent, I would look to find what good qualities they might have had and lift those up at first, praise the good done to soften the blow of what is to come next. When you say that to lie before the gods is an insult you are absolutely correct. While truth is often a subjective thing, it is imperative that we speak our truth to those around us, and ever to the gods, lest we sully our integrity. Lies are anathema to our society. If one cannot trust you to speak the truth, then how can they trust anything you say? No one wants to insult those that loved and lost someone dear to them, but the truth, painful as it may be, is in my opinion preferable to even a well-meaning obfuscation of fact. Instead of delivering a speech railing at the deceased's flaws, I would try to phrase it in such a way as to teach a lesson about what not to do. Gently, tactfully, of course. Speak on how the actions guided others in strengthening their faith in what paths not to take?

As I write this out, I see the forking paths and all the traps and dangers and how very easy offense can be given. Ugh. I have empathy for you, Father Aureth. Yours is no easy task. But I do believe that you, surely one of the most eloquent writers and speakers I have had the pleasure of being an audience to will find your way. Life, and the pain that comes with it, is the greatest teacher of all.

You tell their story, good and bad and everything in-between. You can't sum up an entire life in that short time, but you can make a try at it. You can tell as much truth as circumstances allow. Stories about how they were heroes or monsters are things that come after they're ash, when people start trying to piece together the things they miss, or the things they're glad are gone, or the things they want to pass on to other people as examples. A dead person should have a shot at their life being told honestly, at least once.

But then, I'm not a priest. The only eulogy I've given was to a bunch of rowdy, drunken sellswords after an unwise amount of whiskey. I'm not sure how true it ended up being.

Now see, this is what smart criticism looks like. Take note ladies and gentlemen, and please work on your rhetorical prowess. Maybe you too can be like the Legate.

For the most part I agree with most of what the Legate has said. My only difference with him is that it's my desire to free thralls now. And short of helping thralls escape in the dead of night, this is the only thing I could thing of that would free thralls now without risking getting presented to the sea. I think to my own days as a Thrall and how elated I was when I was freed. I don't want people to have too wait for the houses to free them of their own free will (and who knows when that'll happen) feel that elation. Maybe not the smartest strategy in hindsight for ending Thralldom for good, but in the short term it works.

But I'll be canceling my event. My partner in this feels it's prudent and I don't wana die alone on this hill.

I will say I do like his suggestions, and I am not one to let a good idea go to waste. I will be donating all my winnings from The People's Tournament as charitable support to the three houses that no longer have Thralls, Kennex, Blackshore, and Malaries as well as the Liberators. Though it hasn't been announced yet, I suspect I've won first place. So that should be a healthy chunk of coin?
