I do not know who brought up the topic of the education of northern people, or why, or if there was a journal I missed or what (truth be told, I don't read very many these days). One thing I do know though is that Arik likes to yell. A lot. He's a boisterous brother.

With the charm typical to northern lords, Arik does an exemplary job illustrating why Steelsilk is a fabric unlike any other and why working it requires more then just skill with needle and scissor. Taking a fabric that will never give way and turning it into a worthy piece of clothing takes deep understanding and craftsmanship the results of which I'll never cease to appreciate.

At The Spirits, my liege lord kindly graced us with one of his famous songs, and I was lucky enough to be there to scribe it down for posterity's sake.
Found her in the mountain, wouldn't stop yapping
I told the girl to hush because her Lord was napping
She told me I snored and I was like to die that day
I said hush woman don't you know I give you pay
Stubborn as the north wind this one had been
She hushed up but followed me around like my own twin
I finally cracked I asked her what is it?
She shook her head, no speaking permitted!
Back then she was young as a pup looked like a boy

Those Abandoned bent the knee because the Undying Empire not only offered them protection, not only offered them training, but proved they were both capable of and willing to provide it. Protection from the Compact, but also protection from the Horned Butcher. As much as I hate the sacrifice they took, it's important for people to understand /why/ these Abandoned would make that choice, or else this is just going to keep happening. Those people are safer now than they've been in a long, long, long time. And while I doubt the Undying Empire thinks of them as anything more than most people in the Compact do--resources to be put to use, at best--I also doubt they're being treated like scum stuck to someone's shoe either. I doubt they're in danger of being killed or driven away because the person they've sworn to changed their mind about whether they should actually be allowed to live, a thing which I will remind anyone reading this journal was happening in the Compact, in the Oathlands where these people were living, not long before they made the decision to bow to the Undying Empire.
The Undying Empire has a foothold on Arvum in part because of the danger presented by the Horned Butcher and his followers, but it also has one precisely because of the Compact's old and also extremely recent history with both the Abandoned and Prodigals. This is not the sort of thing that gets solved by even more killing, and nobody in their right mind thinks we can go to war with the Undying Empire and ultimately come out on top.

I have never been one to make much of my birthday, but for my most recent, Lord Arik hosted me for a quiet dinner.
It was altogether a pleasant evening of conversation with a friend and I appreciate the thought extended by his invitation. It may have 'simply' been an alteration of our usual meetings to have a drink and catch up, but it will nevertheless not be forgotten.

I came in third in a beard contest.
Perhaps not something to share with a future potential match.
The Most Magnificent Beards & Spectacular Brews evening was the most enjoyable and good humored event I've attended in a while. And there was also a cute beaver there. My praises to the go to the hosts and judges, Lord Arik, Baroness Acantha, Dame Morrighan and Baroness Violet, as well as all the contestants - men and women alike.
Now I want a beaver.
Perhaps not something to share with a future potential match.

An ode to beards inspired by composing a song for the Nightingale:
Of all the signs of power high,
Of timeless majesty and might
Nothing claims the foremost place
Nor pleasantly can frame the face,
Or be with fingers set in braids,
Or with gleaming, artful charms arrayed,
Or scratched when one is deep in thought
Or in freezing cold keep faces hot
O, beards of many colors!
Of sizes myriad and shapes!
Some by nature granted,
And some by human arts were made!
But all we celebrate with brews:
The hair that from our face protrudes,
The confidence our beards exude,
Shall like the fairest flowers bloom,
So let your majestic beards flow free
That grace your face so stylishly,
And drink your fill to celebrate
Such a wonder that adorns a face!
