Relationship Note on Bianca

The Archscholar of Vellichor is always a source of wisdom, every time I speak with her. That should come as no surprise, given the nature of her position. But her meditations on knowledge in the journals and discussions on theology in person always leave me with insight that I did not have before.

(And though it is not most politic to say so, I note the archscholar was a Wyrmguard. Is it any surprise that a Telmar vassal house produces such a fine theologian?)

Relationship Note on Kael

Count Kael, I have it on good authority that Duke Laurent will be starting a "run in full plate around the Ward" society, which should make it easier to wear the armor at all times and enhance your dodging skills.

It will be tiring, of course. But the peace of mind is worth it.

Relationship Note on Ryhalt

For generations, House Telmar's navy has escorted House Farshaw's merchant marines.

We do so again now, in support of stability in Stormward and across the Compact.

May Mangata grant us fair seas and good winds, and Limerance allow us to speak true to the freed thralls we hope to assist.

Relationship Note on Charlaine

Hot on the heels of the birth of the Keatons' son, Lady Charlaine Blanchard has become Baroness Charlaine Moore. I have had the pleasure of working alongside Lady Charlaine in the research stacks, and I have no doubt she will be much beloved by the people of Acorn Hill.

Relationship Note on Reigna

Count and Countess Keaton are among my favorite couples in Arx (not that I have favorites, mind), and the addition of Lord Aeryn Squall Keaton is a special blessing. I know they will make wonderful parents (with finally a nanny on staff), and I look forward to seeing Lord Aeryn come to age under their guidance.

Come see me when you want to run the Gauntlet, Lord Aeryn. I'll make sure Lord Percephone fudges the score entry for you.

Relationship Note on Mia

Countess Mia was good enough to host many of the Oathlands houses at Heron Hall last eve. The duck was delicious, the cider crisp and refreshing, and the company even better. It was good to be among easy-flowing conversation and to discuss our plans for the future. Already, we are in talks to regularize and better-protect trade routes through the Telmarch, freeing up our armies for work elsewhere.

I do wonder how Lady Monique ended up with those extra bottles of cider, however.

In sparring, I remind myself, it is just as honorable to lose as to win. In losing, we learn about ourselves and our weaknesses and we better ourselves for the fights ahead against our true enemies.

That said, it is rather fun winning.

Relationship Note on Tessa

I am pleased to know that it is not only I who can rot, but also all of my male relations and all men in the Oathlands.

(Except for certain, well-chosen exceptions. Count Keaton is quite delightful, and the High Lord first in honor.)

It is good to be in good company.

Relationship Note on Agnarr

I retained Goodman Agnarr to resolve a matter of honor with Lord Reiker Wyrmguard. He clearly saw the justness of my complaint, whereas Lord Reiker could find no one to stand for him.

The duel was short and direct, just as I would have wished, with Goodman Agnarr emerging victorious. High Lord Edain was right: The man hits hard. Not much of an actor, though.

It is all a trade-off. And it is good to have the whole incident behind me.

Dear Captain Reedy,

I hope this note finds you and your family well. I was glad to hear in your last letter that you had married and had welcomed a son to the world. I think back to our campaigns together, I, young infantry officer, and you, a new military aide, attempting to keep up with our commander's various missives. I was glad to claim you as my own aide, and to benefit from your facility that I lacked with logistics and papers.

I have need for you once more. As you may have heard, the Duke has made me a Voice of the House, and so I am now up to my neck in papers once more, to say nothing of doing research and looking into matters that I would have never thought imaginable when I was in the Telmarch. And so I am directing you, as your Voice, to pack your things and come to Arx and help me keep on top of it all.

Your first assignment: Draft your transfer orders and requisition the necessary funds and resources for the move. Gild grant safe travel to you and yours until you arrive at the Tower.

Yours in service to the Telmarch,

Lord Corban Telmar
Voice of Telmar
"Fear no enemy."

Since I became an adult, I led men in battle. Shortly after arriving in Arx, I became a Voice of my House. Now I get to add one more title to the list: Game Master. Although running the games at the Spring Soiree does not compare in terms of importance or difficulty, it ranks closer than one might imagine on first impression. Our competitors were spirited, and it took all of my faculties to keep up.

I am delighted by the attendance and response to the Spring Soiree. In dark times, the rebirth offered by Petrichor each new season is something to be celebrated. And as with all great events, there were so many behind its success. I hope you will bear with me as I list a few:

* First and foremost is my fantastic co-host, Lady Monique Greenmarch. She was not only the quintessential hostess, visiting each blanket and socializing with our guests, but the entire event was her brainchild. Her weeks of tireless planning and arrangement made the night run as smoothly as it did.

* His Majesty, the King, both for attending and for gifting the prize of a portrait to the winner of musical chairs.

* Marquessa Quenia and Lady Lucita Igniseri, who arranged for the wine from their vineyards.

* Atelier Joscelin Arterius, who crafted the stunning dragonweep ring.

* Artist Jayanthi Hawkeye, who blended the one-of-a-kind perfumes as a raffle prize.

* Magpie and Mae Grayhope, who created trophies and figurines for our Battle of the Sexes winners.

* Our game and raffle winners Mae Grayhope (Musical Chairs), the women (Battle of the Sexes), Legate Orazio (the perfume and aftershave set), and Count Kael Keaton (the dragonweep ring).

* Duke Arn Telmar, for his contribution of funds.

* Marquis Marius Greenmarch, for opening his Lodge to the revelers and for his contribution of funds.

* And finally, to all of our fine guests and friends without whom it would not have been a night at all. We could not have done it without you.

Now I will sleep and not do it again for quite a while.

A griffin. In person. I had heard of the myths and legends about these Grayson mounts. But to see one in person. It is so strange to call an animal, especially one that some crazed cultists were looking to sacrifice to the dark gods, "regal." But he was. Noble. Bloodied but unbowed. Majestic.

I only wish I could talk to him, to encourage him to join us, to tell him how there is one that wished to see him more than anything else. But he is alive somewhere to the North. Maybe some day we will meet again.

Relationship Note on Leona

Sometimes, your shot in the dark finds the target.

Yesterday, I had one of those times with Lord Commander Leona Thrax, leader of the King's Own.

It is good to see in these sometimes bleak times that the luck of the gods smiles upon me occasionally.

Relationship Note on Monique

No, Lady Monique, you may not. There are rules against these things.

Nor may you compete in the games for the custom perfume and after-shave that has been made especially for our Soiree and which only the winner will have the right to order additional batches of.

Relationship Note on Edain

I confess, this is the first time I have packed arms and armor to actually wear at a wedding reception. But then again, I suppose it is the Oathlands way.

I look forward to celebrating High Lord Edain and his bride, Lady Caelis, this evening.

Relationship Note on Arn

Duke Arn today said that I was doing a satisfactory job as a Voice and that I should keep up the good work.

I would have called for the Mercies, I was so concerned, but I thought it better to send pages to the Archives at once so this moment might be captured for history.

Relationship Note on Reese

Few are such a swirl of planning and activity as Princess Reese of Grayson. How she can manage a military meeting of her House, with its cacophony of side comments, suggestions, and questions is beyond me. But this will be my second deployment under her command, and I am pleased to do it.

A few months ago, I never stopped by the Archives of Vellichor except to drop off pages for my journal and for the rites and ceremonies any good, god-fearing noble was expected to attend. Even today, I am hardly one for the dusty stacks, instead preferring to guide and coordinate the work of scholars that could be hired and convinced to lend a land.

But I can say this: The feeling of being on a cusp of discovery rivals that of rushing into battle.

Relationship Note on Tobias

My cousin, Tobias, has not dedicated himself to House business. No. He is a sellsword, albeit a skilled one. He has not even been to the Telmarch in years.

But he is still Telmar. And so as the reports from the front line of Maelstrom trickle in, I cannot help but feel pride in his accomplishments.

Relationship Note on Aislin

Lady Aislin Ashford has a preference for /not/ discussing the Horrible Monster of the Day, and one cannot blame her for it. She knows so much about the threats we face that one cannot help but want to pick her brain for every last detail about them.

But I resisted. Mostly.

Instead, we spoke of our homelands, and her treehouses. To be noble is to be wedded not just to a people, but to a place, to know it as well as your family and your friends. Lady Aislin, I think, shares that view, and it was good to connect with someone who does. We discussed our hopes and wishes for the future -- even those hopes and wishes that may be far-fetched under current circumstances. Lady Aislin, I do not know if your fondest wish will come true. But I hope that it does. You are definitely deserving.
