Relationship Note on Aleksei

As a partner and event host, I cannot speak highly enough of Inquisitor Aleksei. I rather think that we pulled it off smashingly. I'm sure our comedy act can go on tour any day now, as soon as we both retire from about ten thousand other jobs that we routinely do.

I am relieved to see the grace with which the Crovanes embraced responsibility and dignity today. I would note here in the same spirit an apology for my hasty words of condemnation. Though my concern was true and I do not precisely regret it, I believe that reaching out to the Whispers with open hearts and a willingness to accept their mistakes was the absolutely proper course, and I commend them for so doing.

I hope that in the future we will all be more willing to seek the guidance of cooler heads when our tempers rise.

This has also served as a reminder for me of just how wise it was when I signed a contract between House Grayson and the Whisper House. Don't leave home (for the Archives) without one...

My husband personally led the Crownlands contingent of workmen, crafters and traders who rode forth from our lands to come freely to the aid of the people of Stormwall, in the aftermath of the tragedy we, as a Compact, all chose to share.

The gracelessness with which the Crovanes publicly behave fills my heart with concern for those same people. It is our duty before Limerance to protect those who are sworn to us.

For those among the commons who find their nobility are failing them, remember that the Laws of Limerance permit you to remember that your oaths are also to the Crown.

I can confirm that I have gone on an adventure with Master Morgan and that he was instrumental in defraying my self-importance. Which is, of course, otherwise enormous.

Relationship Note on Barric

Many will mourn for the man Prince Barric was. It hurts the heart to lose a friend, a colleague, a lover, a cousin -- whatever he was to you, I grieve with you and I understand.

Yet for me what I mourn for the most is the man Prince Barric would be. The man he chose, and sought to become. The man he set his heart's hopes upon, and turned his face towards duty to embrace it. A godsworn brother of the Templar Knights.

In his honor House Grayson has donated a substantial sum to the Templars of Gloria, and for myself, I plan a vigil at her Shrine.

Yet he died in glory, a true knight, and I'll weep for the chivalry he never got to do, but I shall not be bitter for an ending that will be worth a song.

None greater, Barric Grayson. You upheld it at the end, and we will never forget. I will never forget.

Relationship Note on Ainsley

The thing about compassion is that while it may have no limit, human energy does ... even for Ainsley Grayson.

Asharion's first word was "Dad," and I think that places him well ahead of his brother in terms of amiability; Tiber's first word was "No."

Asharion's second word was "dog". I believe he was trying to steal Steadfast from his cousins at the time.

Asharion's third word was "griffin". I think Aislin would be proud.

Relationship Note on Kenna

Fierce passion in defense of a noble's responsibilities and obligations are worth losing one's temper over. I was not a party to Lady Kenna's argument and cannot speak to what incensed her in this regard, but I am generally in favor of her spirit. Remember, though, that when it comes to aiding others, heat is best tempered to warmth. No one is going to be shouted at until they are nicer, generally speaking.

Except Ainsley, sometimes.

My shopping expedition today grew far more expensive than I originally anticipated. I found a delightful ring for Princess Macda, picked up a pair of lovely hairpins for Princess Liara, and found, in a new shop -- I mean, new to me, I'd never been there before -- an absolutely gorgeous set of antique silverware. I write specifically about this treasure because it seems so unusual a find to me, and I have set it up on display in the Dining Room at the mansion because it seems a lovely piece of the past of House Grayson. As I write this in my journal I consider the idea of hosting a dinner party for no other reason than to ensure that people have a chance to see it.

Imori says that the shop we wandered into was called Storied Treasures. It's near the theater on Lord's Lane. If you have any interest in antiquities at all I sincerely recommend taking a peek at what they have on display.

If the participants in a duel believe honor is satisfied by the choice of weapon, and the commons enjoy the show, the Champions have done their duty by Gloria. Have they not?

Any who believe music may not stand as a weapon in honor before the gods may address their complaints to the extremely skeptical look on my face.

I have been practicing the eyebrows.

Sir Corban, I hope I am the first to congratulate you on the good fortune of your friends. I'm sure they're going to be very happy together, but truly, it is you who are the real winner here.

Though there are times when it seems that it escapes us, in the panoply and brilliance of royalty at play, of nobility engaging in silliness and public displays of wealth. . .

Those who reside outside the walls know that all security is false. Though we are relatively protected in the capital with the main strength of the Iron Guard and the walls of the city around us, still it is not that far to go to find a front. We've spoken before about the ends of wars, but it's truly only the end of a particular conflict in a world that is never entirely at peace.

There are times that we come to remember that any security is a delusion. That any wall might have ears, that any text might be observed, that to speak the name of an evil is to call it down upon you.

There are some who need these reminders more than others, of course.

I beg you all to remember vigilance. If you see the Inquisition's red and black, know that we stand for the protection of the Compact against all of those threats. We aren't everywhere. We can't stop everything. But of any choice I have made since coming to Arx, I can regret not at all my choice to put on this badge.

Because we strive. We work. We might even grow.

We are but one small candle lit against the vasty dark, but we will stand, and illumine all we can. I hope you will stand with us.

The Tournament of Swords was an unqualified success. Princess Sabella and Princess Coraline were stalwart allies unto the breach. Over the course of two nights of contest and celebration, we gave away thousands of silver, rubicund, seasilk, gemstones, stygian, iridescite, epiphanite, and of course, the diamondplate prize for the melee. We also gave away gallons of ale, wine, mead, approximately 70 whole roast pigs, 4 spitted cattle, 100 fowl, 200 charcoal baked potatoes, and I'm not sure how many cakes and tarts, but the staff has informed me that it was a lot!

I also have no idea how much face paint we went through, but the children definitely seemed to enjoy themselves, especially at the beach parade portion of the entertainment. Tiber threw a fit when we had to wash the griffon paint off his face, because he wanted to stay a monster forever. (I somehow did not comment on this.)

Congratulations to all of those who were victorious and my thanks to everyone who competed, I'm so glad you came and I hope everyone enjoyed themselves!

(I'm left without any comment on the Archduke's unicorn.)

Prince Asharion Grayson is 1 year old today. I took him up in the trees with me after breakfast. I think his namesake would be proud of how much he seemed to enjoy it.
