Relationship Note on Rinel

Some weeks ago I ran into Rinel on the Sovereign Bridge. I believe she needs to feed her cat less. Unless she's attempting to build the strongest neck in Arvum.

Relationship Note on Sparte

House Thrax is fortunate to have a retainer as loyal to its conviction as Sparte Grayfallow and I am fortunate to have a protege so diligent.

He bent the knee during our war with the Gyre and has shown his bravery time and time again. He may not have been born in the Mourning Isles, but he committed to defend them. I'll always respect that.

Yesterday, I happened upon a rabbit with the reddest eyes. Now that alone is unusual, yet I was more surprised that the cat didn't immediately go for the kill. My leg is still sore from how fast she'd scaled me just to get away from the damn thing. I don't usually consider rabbits a frightening predator, so I really am hoping that was just a one-time thing.

If any happen to see a rabbit with red eyes in the future, I don't recommend one fucks with it.

In the past few months, we've seen the arrival of no less than five members of Thrax's extended family in Arx. The estate hasn't been this full of noise since Astrid came into the world. Not that I'm complaining, the new wing of the house provides a hell of a lot more room.

Although I do hope this isn't a sign that Maelstrom has started to sink into the sea.

Spend too much time letting the past toss and turn in your mind, you'll forget to live in the present.

I stopped to think today and realized that I’m over halfway through my thirties.

No matter how many times I’ve asked, time hasn’t granted my request to slow down. Hmph.

Maybe the next time I stop for a think I’ll be drinking the well earned wine of retirement. It’s fun to dream, sometimes.

Astrid,

As you saw fit to assault my shins with a wooden axe today, you will now repay your debt by reiterating the principles of our people. I understand that you are 3 years old and your reading skills are middling to non-existent at best. That's okay. We'll wait.

Strength. House Thrax and the Mourning Isles themselves have been a people hardened by conflict. We have fought those we call allies today and those we have called enemy for a millennia. We have fought on every shore. We have fought against dishonor and traitors. No matter how many enemies we have faced, Maelstrom has survived every wave. For one thousand years, our home has never fallen once. It is being at the eye of the storm in war and brutality that has defined many of us. It breeds the strong. The soldiers and the sailors alike. You will see battle many times in your life. You will be proud of the martial pride of your fellow Islander.

Loyalty. We are loyal to many things. Our families. Our Houses. Our traditions. Our crown. Our church. Most of all, our honor. So long as there is a Compact, so to will there be a Thrax to stand by it. Our friends, our true friends, are kindred souls for life. Your family will always be there for you and you too shall give your everything to them. Your House will reward you for your service and in turn will protect you. The traditions will be our strongest base, while we pay homage to them so to will they uphold our society.

Order. Women across the Isles have been some of the most significant Lawyers, Scholars and Diplomats throughout the world. Law is paramount to our world and you will find few better to learn from than those of the Isles. It is these institutions of order that we find the foundation of our daily life, propelled with firm rationale and logic. Lady Octavia Kennex is a prime example of such a soul. Perhaps you'll meet her one day, when you can speak in sentences longer than two or three words.

These are but three things you'll come to master in your future life. You are born gifted and in return, you will lead those who were not with honor. That will be your duty when you are crowned Princess of Maelstrom. For now, I believe you need a nap, because I can hear you screaming expletives in the other room and the nannies are not paid enough for this.

There is reason to be concerned when a way of life that has been rooted for a thousand years becomes threatened. There is also no shame in admitting when one has found themselves incorrect. There is courage in taking the steps to to learn.

In a more ignorant time, slavery was common across the whole of the Compact. Someone with wisdom to realize what was wrong and the courage to do something about it changed that. The world was chaos. But the world survived and we have lasted long enough to inherit it from them. The Faith of today has embraced the God of Choice once again. The work of today is not only just, but pious in that nature.

One tradition being discarded because of its detriment over its value does not bring all others down with it. We still have the foresight to ensure the unworthy and lacking bloodline do not become neo-nobles. We still protect our lands from the savage Shav'arvani. Our military institutions remain unshaken. Our faith in the Gods burning bright. Our core is unbroken. So it has been, so it shall remain.

We are the noble breed. We hold our standards high and we do better because it is our responsibility. Accept nothing less.

At some point in our history there was a person who squeezed a cow and said "yeah, I'll drink whatever that is". Ever since, Oathlanders have celebrated.

As I get older, I find better comfort in the war room than on the front lines. I understand both intricately. I still enjoy the rush of battle. But risking my life has become less and less viable over the recent years.

Maybe I should be thankful that there aren't any immediate wars to be attending on a battlefield. There's something nostalgic when I think about it though. The anticipation and the passion of two sides colliding.

Sometimes when I think of leading the Compact against the Gyre, I feel that same sensation. Like a distant sensation that I just can't grasp fully. An inkling. Embers.

I need a hobby.

I've been impressed more and more by the fine make of Oathlands steel. There is something at home with simple, good quality metal. It's not tinted red, it's not plated in diamonds, it's not got an elven myth attached to it... Just good craftsmanship from a good mind. I was never very comfortable wielding swords. Axes were more common on ships, they served many purposes. To hook yourself when boarding, to carve through wood, or split a shield in twain. I have never been one for finesse and grace in combat when enough strength can smash both.

Yet I have found myself taken by the nobility of the greatsword. As a symbol and a complimentary to my fighting style. Parrying is rusty, but I manage. The difference is mutable grip is also nicely counter balanced by having such a large edge to work with.

It's been months since I've been delivered this sword and I still find nice things to say about it. This weapon is quickly becoming my favorite. I wonder if Astrid would like a greatsword as well. When she's older, of course.

I return from Maelstrom and the city of Arx is still here. That's always good.

I do not see much reprieve from business in the capital in the near future. That's not so good. Small victories, however. Small victories.

Relationship Note on Eleyna

It's difficult to find a word to describe Archduchess Eleyna to me. Her and Talen both were very close to my wife and I. To hear that she was taken by illness is...

Hm.

I don't count many people personally close to me. But Eleyna and Talen... Those two I would have to describe as "friends".

Good friends.

My cousin deserves plenty of praise for her performance in the Grand Melee. Congratulations on advancing as a finalist, you fought with honor.

I was very proud to see several Islanders take the field today. Each one fought with the ferocity expected of reavers.

While the Tournament of Roses is upon us, many opportunities are displayed. My own entry does not come out of a specific desire for something, I just enjoy being apart of the big fight. If I win a boon, it will go onto someone more deserving.

However, with Compact traditions being shoved into the foreground, I think it good that every participant remember the state of the world today before they make their desires known. By no means am I saying that no one should be rewarded for their prowess. What I am saying is that physical skill alone needs to be tempered with wisdom.

Say you are a commoner and you choose to marry nobility or elect to found your own rose-barony. You would be entering a very hostile world, not retaining a bloodline that has shown the right to rule through generations. As we stand in a time of transition, we must sternly defend the traditions we already know form the backbone of our society. Especially while another, deeply rooted one is being eroded.

Noble lineage is the strongest supporter to the peerage's institutions. I advise caution to anyone seeking to raise themselves to a member of the nobility, while our Compact's foundation is already being questioned by detractors.
