The bowls are empty,
tables cleared.
One lantern still burns.
I take it with me to bed.

I don't suppose I've ever taken to Arx the way that my siblings have - I loathe to make landfall here and give up the sea once more. With civil war in the Isles becoming closer to a reality, my hand is forced. I have to help Blackshore make preparations for the war to come.

Everything can collapse.

Houses, bodies, and armies collapse when their rhythm becomes disrupted.

In large-scale strategy, when the enemy starts to collapse you must pursue him without letting the chance go. If you fail to take advantage of your enemies' collapse, they may recover. Crush them utterly.

Honor a noble surrender, but know when a surrender is truly noble.

Everything can collapse.

You tell me that the cold will go away and spring is on its way.
Can we just go back to the island?

Blackberry tarts.
Got thirteen.
Ate a dozen.
Shared one.
Delicious.

To what I am certain is House Pravus's regret, I bring no particular aptitude for galas and revelry. Yet what I have seen (and tasted) of the bustling preparations for the wedding promises it will be an extraordinary day - and for many a recovery-filled morning after.

To you many working so tirelessly today, from flowers to bakers, tailors to bards: you are seen, and you will be remembered. You have my word.

Tomorrow, I marry. The First Choice made possible what Limerance will sanctify. And yet: I could no more do this alone than I could plan this banquet. If you have intentions for prayers, Reader, I'd be honored to include them in my own at this time. Send word.

I've never had a problem sharing my pie or my tarts, but I do save the best for my loves. Sharing feels great, but I enjoy making those dearest to me feel special. And I hope they do.

Relationship Note on Tanith

I had something that I really planned on putting to paper this morning. But then I made TRAGIC MISTAKE of reading the journals of my friends and suddenly all I want to do is eat blackberry tarts.

I'm so hungry now.

Relationship Note on Tanith

My wife is the most wonderful woman in Arvum, Scholar. I got home to find a baker's dozen of blackberry tarts. Fresh, perfect, blackberry tarts, and a note that said they were mine to eat as I wished.

A perfect crust with a hint of crunch; a gooey centre, still warm from the oven, moist and ripe with promise.

No, I didn't scoff the lot. I had one, and then there were four left for each of us. That's how I wished to eat them. In company, with the people I love.

Eh? Oh, the Salacious Baker, down in the Lowers. Best bakery in Arx, and I'm not just saying that because I married the baker. Delivery? Probably, let me know what you and yours'd like and I'll get it sent up. That writing is hungry work.

Your pain is my pain, my pain is your pain. It is nice to have someone who understands. It's also gratifying to see someone experience something for the first time. My very first Dreamer, I think.

Piece of wisdom I heard once.. no idea where it came from, or who said it first.

Held that an enemy should be treated generously, or else destroyed utterly, as folk could seek revenge for wounds, but could take no revenge from a death blow.

The former course could make friends of foemen, but also may leave a dire foe with a knife to bury in your throat. The latter course could see entire houses razed to ash and bloodlines cut. It's the curse of judgement that such choices can't oft be made more than once.

Relationship Note on Tanith

As it turns out, everyone was in fact talking about real tarts. Real blackberry tarts. I didn't think they weren't but I did beg some off of Tanith and it was worth it. I should give her some money, but I forgot in the midst of my pregnancy cravings.

Thirteen warm, fresh pastries delivered straight to me, which I promptly ate in Anisha's pantry without telling anyone except Tanith. Until now.

Just mommy's treat. No sharing with babies, no sharing with Asher, no sharing with a girlfriend, though I did have to give one to Bryn as a pay off because she saw me go in there with them.

It was glorious.

Now I do not want anything blackberry filled or stuffed for the rest of the winter, thank you.

I've seen galleys with fewer hands on board than the Saik 'dinner party'. Courtiers and socialites could invade a damned barony without much more work or expense than what goes into preparing such events.

All so folk can fill a hall and talk to one body in every ten present which they might not know.

It were pleasant enough, I'm not complaining.
But what the bloody fuck?

While I'm on it, the Arvani custom of dancing in pairs puzzles me. Seems selfish.
