Praise to the Mother of Beginnings and Queen of Endings, may she watch over us all.

It is always preferable to be surrounded by good friends and family.

I had the pleasure of getting out and participating in the recent melee for Gloria. The field was full of luminaries, and I was fortunate enough to take second place, losing to her highness, Reece.

There was a little kerfluffle with regards to Master Wild, it seems the blows he took over the course of the melee were more difficult to treat than they seemed, though the Mercies had him well in hand when I left. In all, a good day.

To his highness, Prince Ettore Mydas Velenosa,

Marquessa Freja Archeron was a fine and noble woman who carried that 'special sword' with distinction.

However, it was not her blade any more than it is mine.

It was not 'chased', and the timing of its retrieval was due to threats against its continued existence rather than fiat, whim or design.

None of which alters that two hundred souls perished, including Marquis Geraint's, that another threat heads towards our city, and we know not how, or by whom, or why.

So it is wholly unlike the situation you wish to liken it to.

Which is one for which I have already apologised.

May the gods watch over you, your highness, my greatest wishes for your continued health.

Did I miss something?

Two hundred soldiers have died... and people are bickering over whether the right person got the coronet before the corpses have even cooled.

No, scholar... I didn't mean for you to... fine. Sure. Just add it in there with the rest of them.

So this week I watched people struggle in small boats. Sang (badly), outdrank Brogan (ha!) and then had my ass handed to me with a dead fish. Overall it was a lot of fun, even if after three baths I cannot seem to get rid of that fish smell completely. Ugh.

Today was a humbling day, and shows me that I have spent far too much time with the paperwork and not enough out on the field.

First I was outridden and out-finessed by a couple of talented jousters in the form of Sir Thorley Sandreef and Lord Fecundo Rubino for Lord Cristoph's Jousting Tourney.

And then, just in case I needed a further reminder to spend more time in the field I was bested again by Lord Fecundo for Grandmaster Caspian's birthday celebrations, before having that smug show-off Lord Brogan put me in my place rather adroitly on the wrestling field.

All in all it was a fun day, but a good reminder that one can never rest on their laurels when it comes to matters martial.

Today the white's are full of stories about siblings from what my aide's report. Or perhaps it only seems like it. So, why not? There's another battle looming soon and at least if it's my end it's written somewhere.

I'm the oldest of seven. Mother passed away soon after the youngest was born, father was already gone, and it fell to our grandfather to raise us.

I cooked, I cleaned. In many ways I stopped being a child when she died, and although grandpa survived her by more than a decade, even then I knew he was killing himself in small measures to raise us. Once I was old enough, I joined the Guard so that he might enjoy his last years... and admittedly because back then it seemed easier than trying to keep an eye on six miserable little red-headed brats.

I love my brothers and sisters. They are strong and bright in their own ways, and even when maddeningly obstinate, they are family. I cherish them all.

Relationship Note on Brogan

Once again the ice bear climbs off the mountain just in time for war.

Even if this is a different sort of battle from the last, the irony doesn't escape me.

It's good to see you again my friend.

Even if sometimes I just want to punch you.

I knew Lord Valerio Mazetti a very short time, but, he made an impression.

It was nearly five inches square and lurid shades of purple and green for days, and the smattering of deeper spots felt like someone stabbed me with a hairpin multiple times for the next couple of weeks.

He also gave me quite a scare when he hit the sands like a sack of potatoes, but, for all that I'd be a liar to say he was a comely man... he was a witty one. His scars told stories I never got to hear the balance of but spoke as loudly as his hammer as to the kind of iron forged man he was.

I cannot pretend to be surprised, that he met his end in battle. Protecting the life of another. Mother keep him safe, until his next turn on the Wheel.

The Legend Gala was, indeed, something to behold. And certainly not something I'm liable to soon forget.

The effort put into it was truly monumental in and of itself and it was astoundingly crowded.

I got to speak with the Goldenpyre of the evening, Lady Aahana Volkov, and was glad that she was familiar, and willing, to share the story of Goldenpyre for the curious who came by her alcove. Would that I'd had the time to go visit with all the other Legends in their alcoves, too.

I am still at least somewhat envious of the dragon that she sat astride, but I don't think even if I removed every piece of furniture from my cell that it would fit.

It's no secret I favour a large sword, always have done. I like the weight of it. The reach of it. The sheer intimidation factor of such a large blade.

And yet now I find myself having to learn the art of something shorter, smaller, lighter.

Deceptively plain, in its own way, it requires a balance and motion that Persuasion does not, and yet for all the sublime beauty of it and delicate fragility compared to the great sword, there can be no question as to which is the deadlier weapon.

It does somewhat feel like being a raw recruit over again, to try and retrain years of reflexes for use with such a blade. Here's hoping I can adjust.

A polar plunge; and I did pretty well at it, even if I felt half-frozen by the end. I was admittedly relieved to have been defeated by her highness, Reese, this time as winning ones own craftwork does rather feel inappropriate.

Then I went to the spring festival. Normally I do fairly well with feats of strength, but my hand slipped on the log and I almost landed it on my own head. I'm just grateful that it didn't land on anyone else.

I feel out of practice. Too much time drilling and working on paperwork, not enough in other ways.

My thanks to Master Voss, who carried out my testing for the Explorers today.

And managed not to laugh at my being slapped in the face with a pine branch.

Hopefully I shall be able to be of some small aid to the Society in future.

Few are those who I would count close to my heart.

Lady Elara was one of them.

I shall cherish her pin until the end of my days, even if right now its mere sight brings me to tears all over again.

It's been a few days, but I wanted to belatedly thank Amanda Whisper for the Snowball fight, and my team, who although they lost, lost gallantly, and had fun doing so.

We were eliminated to a man by Tikva's team, in a bout well won, but Prince Niklas proved he was better at snowballs than jousting, Count Artorius proved that a bigger target is not always easier to hit, and Lady Azova showed remarkable resilience in the face of our chosen 'foe'. With Lord Geralt and Master Ven to round out our numbers we were certainly not lacking for good arms overall, but the snow was not with us that day.

Next time? Bigger snow fort.

I swear, if Merril drags me out of one more thing this week, I might lock her in the Tower.

I know she means well, and she's right, there's a lot of work to be done, but I miss the days where I had the time to go to Darts'n'Drinking or the Sip'n'Spar. While I'm all for staying sober when I'm on duty, there has been a horrific spate of it in my off hours.
