Relationship Note on Aureth
This is a song I am working on.
Brand was a sad moping sort,
All a-whinin' back and forth,
'Cause he'd lost his pretty dollie.
All 'cause someone stole his toy,
And took away poor Brand's joy:
"If I'm not, then no one's jolly."
So then Silence came along,
But to their awf'ly quiet song,
We replied with one more hearty.
And with bones singing like flutes,
Toes a-rattlin' in their boots,
All the dead showed up to the party.
'Cause the Queen rose up a throng,
For she rather likes a song,
With an end and a beginning.
And though some of them did smell,
The dead could fight rather well,
And keep Brand's poor slaves from winning.
Brother Aureth, he did lead them,
Though he risked a hardy beatin',
To make folk's hopes not so gray.
And though Brands slaves were many,
We did kick them in the fanny,
And we held our ground that day.
I ought to add some rhymes for other folk that were there, which were plenty, and some lived and some died. And maybe I'll add some lines to say how it ended with the paladins and the gods and all but I don't rightly know what happened there, so this is just a song about what I saw at the graveyard with my own two eyes that the dirt shall have one day.
There was dead folk fighting to my left and to my right, and that's a sight to see and it shows the gods work in funny ways.

Lost a cousin today to the Faith... but we all gained a brother, I suppose. Aureth's scared me over the last few months that I've been back in the city, but now that I'm starting to understand some of what's going on around him, I suppose I feel lucky to be close to someone doing such incredible things.

My brother swore himself to the Queen. Today he adds vows to the Faith as a whole concept. As an institution. A priest formally and before the Compact.
I mark this as a record. I would say 'in a sense, this changes nothing', but life is change, and my brother has transformed in the past year. He is still Aureth, narrative is continuity, his rage and his curiosity are constants, but his purpose is discovered. He's bright with purpose.
And this is wonderful.
I remember the tarot cards turned to ash. I know how you don't use them any more and I never finished the new set. Tapped out at about-- a third of the needed paintings? They're up above the shop, long dry, a metaphor toward understanding and sight that you no longer need. I'm glad to have them, though. Maybe for a wall, sometimes. Nostalgia, a glance back without weight.
You're more than you ever imagined, than I ever imagined, brother, and I thought I was rather thinking you up. More fool me.
I love you, Aureth. May the Queen and all the Pantheon watch over you, but not sweep you home any time soon. Please stay safe.

Never in a thousand years would I imagine my duty as Minister of Defense - Coordinator of the Compact's Militaries - to include coordinating an Army of the Dead.

I'm starting to worry that Aureth is taking to his new holy life too literally.
He also told me that the demon they faced was invisible. How are we supposed to fight things that can't be seen? I'm starting to rethink the poetry approach. Maybe we *can* bore them to death. What other options do we have?

A crucial element in being one of the Faithful is to have faith not just in our gods, but in their servants too. We must believe in them, in their ability to translate the message of the gods to us, and in their willingness to ensure that we know what we must to see us through these days. That is even more important when the god (or goddess) in question is one who has been Lost to us.
I have faith in Aureth. I believed in him before as someone who would speak for those who mattered to him. I believe in him now, as someone who is capable of bringing to us the will of Death, so we may fold Her worship into our Pantheon again.

If I had to describe anyone I knew as consistently 'beleaguered', unfortunately for Aureth I would probably have to select him. On the other hand, this may turn out to have been a fortunate bit of preparation, because it seems like he's more likely than not to become the newest Legate of the Pantheon before too long. I'm not sure what they'll call the position, though. The Legate of the Lost, I suppose?

Remember when we were young and loose and clever? Tied to nothing and no one, invisible, so it was safe for us to fly low and laugh.
Now, sometimes, I feel disoriented. But then I remember you're still here. We're here together. We'll be all right. Take a deep breath. Find the moment. Dart on to the next moment. And the next.
