Relationship Note on Kedehern

To be fair, Adalyn and I did jump out the nearest window at our earliest convenience, and encouraged Colette to do the same. I didn't think the whole place would go up so quickly, is all. It's the first time I've ever been inside a burning building.

I'll know better next time.

Pirate Ashpile: There's some people looking for us downstairs at the bar!
Pirate Burntup: What do we do?
Pirate Charcola: Let's not panic boys! Just stuff rags in these bottles of alcohol, light them on fire and throw them down from the balcony at them!
Pirate Ashpile & Burntup: YAH! BURN THEM ALL!

The pirates promptly set everything below on fire, including the stairs and the walls, and the floor.

Pirate Ashpile: ...
Pirate Burntup: So, I guess we just die then?
Pirate Charcola: I have regrets.

I imagine that's how that all happened, anyway. I suppose we'll never know now.

That's quite sad to hear. I was rather fond of Duke Vercyn and his beard.

That was a wonderful birthday joust. Thank you, Baron Uncle Norwood and Lady Adalyn.

It's funny just how much change can occur over the course of a year. I'm not an entirely different person by any means, but in my wildest imaginings, I don't think I ever envisioned myself giving serious challenge to Norwood in a proper joust. I know I didn't quite win, but it was very close, and that's a victory I'll gladly take.

As the White Heart, Minister of Finance and Voice of Keaton, and Knight of Oakhaven, I would like to take this opportunity to give my sincerest thanks to the wonderful and industrious Oakhaveni peoples and congratulate us, their most benevolent, wise and puissant Keatonesian rulers, for yet another outstanding season of plenty thanks to our exceptional leadership.

This year's harvest has been bountiful and our turnips, pumpkins and acorn squash unmatched, being superior in size, color, shape, flavor and density to all others. Although everyone desires these exquisite crops because their own are sad and contemptible, they've already been distributed exclusively among ourselves and our most trusted allies so your pleas shall be ignored. Perhaps next season, if you begin begging now in earnest, you too shall be blessed and will know at last, the indescribably rich flavor of our divine Oakhavenese turnips, pumpkins and acorn squash.

As ever, our grand and most venerable House and indefatigable Oakhaveran peoples go from strength to strength, and victory to victory, ever rising to new extraordinary heights while always remaining gracious and kind to our pitiable lessers who did not have the good sense and foresight to be born a proud and peerless Oakhavian.

(Translation from High Pompousian for the humble folk: The Everettes of Elmhurst grew a truly mammoth pumpkin this year, and it was amazing. Their turnips and acorn squash were also magnificent and they gave me a basket of them to share with my family waiting at the keep (they were very good and filling). Their hard work and Granny Everette's faith in Petrichor was well rewarded and I'm quite pleased that this winter will not be a lean one in Keaton lands as the harvest was a satisfactory one by all reports (gods be praised).)

I'm not sure where all those ducks were coming from and why they seemed rather curious about baby Nora Woode. She must have some strange affinity for duck kind, or they mistook her for a cute little duckling.

Ducks aside, it was a very serious party otherwise. Thank you to all who attended, Lady Adalyn for comporting herself with great dignity and sobriety as co-host, and Baron Norwood who so graciously permitted us the use of his lovely garden.

Congratulations also to Prince Edain for proving himself quite resolute and appropriately sober. I hope the deadly serious Duskshire duck dagger will serve him well.

I feel so much better now.

I recall having gamely offered to harvest pumpkins, pick apples, plow fields and chop down trees for various folk in Oakhaven while I was celebrating. I was feeling rather spirited at the time and full of reverence for the land and Petrichor. I think I even promised one of the Everettes a new cow as fine as Laurent's fabled Sheila and Duskshire mules for - well, I'm not sure who that was. It's a bit of a blur now, but come fall I'll make good on my promises. I just may need to be reminded what they were.

That was not what I expected from a planting at the Lodge. I had my technique from an old treatise I'd found in the Archives that described in great, and exacting detail the proper way to sow beets for a good harvest, and I was doing quite well I thought. Everything was precise in my row, until I noticed Marigold was blithely tramping on everything behind me, and then we were all attacked by shav.

They meant to enslave us, I heard, which seems very bold given how close we were to Arx. Although there were some very commendable attempts at diplomacy, things took a violent turn. I hope everyone recovers from their injuries.

Relationship Note on Jael

Congratulations, though I fear Uncle Baron Norwood will be a nervous wreck from now on, with his waking hours all fully committed to making sure young Lady Nora Woode is kept safe from bears.

Relationship Note on Veronica

I could think of no better acknowledgement of a job well done, as a lawyer, than to be burned in effigy.

It really was all I could do to keep the crowd distracted with Kael, while you and Reigna found the damning evidence at the murder scene, Rohran and Natalia secured the poor woman so falsely accused, and Rane and Apollo rode down the true culprit. It could have had a much more tragic ending without all our efforts together.

Relationship Note on Shae

You should really marry Kedehern in. There was a tradition, historically, of Keatons have names starting with K. All we have is Kael now. No Khae, Keronica, Keigna, Kaerith, Korhan, Kaeryn, Kalis, Krianne or Kamari.

Then to fully revive the tradition, you'd need only name your children something like Kerbert and Keatrice... or perhaps not. I suppose it's a custom only the Kertons have continued to this day. Maybe it should remain theirs alone.

As my shoulder was still quite stiff from the hit I took from Lord Michael Bisland at the recent joust Lady Tesha hosted, I took an afternoon to paint a new donkey painting for Veronica. Rather than mountains to climb, I painted apples to eat and Keaton Keep in the distance. I think it turned out very well, considering. It's already been hung in her suite where she will be sure to enjoy it.

I am still looking for the donkey painting that was lost or stolen, but I suppose it's gone for good. I've received no word to indicate its current whereabouts and condition.

The beautiful painting I created that depicted a very courageous donkey, which I left in Veronica's room so that she would be inspired each and every time she saw it has vanished!

It may have been stolen, misplaced or gods forbid, destroyed. I just don't know. Please, if anyone reads this and knows of its whereabouts please send word at your earliest possible convenience. Veronica is absolutely distraught without it.

I saw Lord Kedehern headbutt a war goat in the cellar of an abandoned Lycene manse. Some other things happened as well, but I think that was the most memorable event of the expedition.

For the record, the picnic basket was rescued with only minor spoilage and I found the melon I'd left for the swimmers in our party untouched, but surrounded by crabs. I gave them some bread. I'm not entirely sure what crabs eat, but that seemed fair recompense for taking the melon away.

All in all, a successful first expedition. The others found papers I was able to review and judge legal binding so the claim could be confirmed. I'll donate the reward to the Explorers but not the pearl I found. I'm going to have that made into something shiny to commemorate the outing.

I'm surprised that so many people apparently read the apostate Elisha's journal entries regularly and also believed they were somehow true. I was told of them early on, looked over a fanciful one about a slave city in Eurus, then set it aside with a shake of my head and never asked for another. I'm sorry and mildly alarmed that so many were taken in, even a little bit, by a writer with a flair for words and a very loose grasp on reality.

Though it may have seemed rather harmless to some and the punishment given harsh, it was not. Even the smallest falsehood told persistently and convincingly enough can warp and grow into a monster beyond anyone's control. The Faith showed remarkable patience, restraint and mercy in this instance. Now, I hope that the six simple rules to avoid excommunication Archscholar Sina has helpfully described will be followed and that something like this will not happen again any time soon.

I rescued a lamb from a spring flood just east of Artshall, and was well covered with mud which became a stinking crust when it dried in the sun. Duke Cristoph didn't even recognize me on the street when we passed each other. I had intended to bathe before presenting myself to the Laurents, so I was tempted to sneak by, but the ever keen eyed Jael spotted me before I could.

Then there was all the commotion with a dear old woman with her bag of cheese falling at Cristoph's feet, and somehow I ended up bringing down a banana leaf smuggling operation by bopping the imposter pretending to be her son on the nose and noticing that the cheese wheels were full of dried leaf. Her fake son was taken into custody to await the Duke's justice, and Jael and I saw her to the healers. She had taken an awful spill and was in a sad state of confusion about her son.

It was a very busy day! My bath was well earned.

Apologies to Duke Malcolm and farmer Joe in Graypeak. I was trying to help, but I clearly underestimated just how difficult it is to plow fields correctly. My furrows were not straight. Not at all.

At the next shrine I visited, in addition to my prayers to Gloria, I gave one to Petrichor, in the hope that Joe's turnip field be bountiful this year.
