When Gaius was last in town he pointedly asked me how the other nobles treated us, and I could honestly say that the ones I've met have been perfectly nice. He seemed surprised and he had good reason to be so.
As more time has gone by and I have dipped my toes more pots and circles I HAVE come across the kind of distaste that Gaius was worried about. It's more in sideline looks, a general tone of dismissal, but nothing outright rude. I think most of those with strong feelings about my elevation also have strong feelings about being polite.
Really, I can't blame them for their looks and tones. I haven't done a single thing to deserve my elevation. Silas, yes. Me? I'm just riding on his coat-tails. Maybe someday I'll do something worth this elevation. SOMEDAY.
For now though, I'm happy to be able to do little things to help Hawkhold where I can. I am sure my parents laugh as I'm FINALLY putting to good use all those lessons that I dodged as a kid about trade agreements and how best to handle money. It all has a PURPOSE now though and that makes all the difference.

2. The position of smiler-in-chief; someone needs to be nice to the new Guards.

Last night I received the most beautiful, wonderful, amazing gift ever. Her name is Princess Muffin. She's a beautiful white puppy and so fuzzy I feel like I'm touching a cloud when I pet her. Here are some words to describe her:
This puppy is fluffy in the extreme. She's no more than 8 inches tall and weighs perhaps 10-12 pounds. The size of her paws suggests that she's maybe a quarter of her true height. Her coat is *thick*; fluffy, fluffy fur is a snowy white with a slight sheen of golden-blonde fur to it. She has a large (fluffy) head that features big coal black eyes, and a wet nose that's always sniffing something. She wears a pretty green collar with a metal tag that reads: 'Princess Muffin, Her Fluffiness'.
I was a little worried when I brought her back to my room that maybe she and Princess Sally Acorn might not get along. I mean, Sally's never had a problem with dogs before, but those were dogs not also vying for room on the bed. When I bought Muffin into my room the first time I was very careful to have her sit down before I coaxed Sally out to say hello.
I shouldn't have worried though. They hit it off like they've known one another forever! Sally sniffed at Muffin a few times and then promptly climbed right onto Muffin's back. That was a super new experience for muffin I guess, because she made herself dizzy trying to see what Sally was doing there. They spent the next hour with Sally darting here and there in my room with Muffin trotting after. (Muffin is SO CUTE but also so clumsy too! I think she fell a good four times when Sally changed direction too quickly for Muffin to react.)
Eventually Muffin got tired and so she came and curled up at the foot of my bed. I was petting her and Sally decided to join it. She curled up right against Muffin's belly like a little red spot against Muffin's white fur. We fell asleep like that. When I woke up Muffin had migrated up and was curled against my chest now, and Sally was back on her favorite spot on the pillow.
I know there are a lot of really horrible things going on right now, but last evening and this morning were perfect. If I could ever wish to just freeze a moment - it would have been right then.
