Duke Arn,

The Telmarines performed admirably in the Battle of Setarco. Each did her duty, did not falter, and fought with courage and conviction. And -- together with the infantry of the Oathlands and the Lyceum -- they held the line. Setarco was not breached. And it did not fall.

I am conferring with the company commanders regarding the names and families, and Captain Reedy will forward them for your review when they are compiled. But these soldiers of the Great Red Wall were a brick in the wall of Setarco. We will remember them.

Yours in service to the Telmarch,

Lord Corban Telmar

Relationship Note on Monique

My dearest Monique,

As you know, there are no messengers going from Setarco to Arx, those that would carry individual missives. But the scholars are hard at work archiving the war, and so I thought I would kill two birds with one stone by sending this entry in the form of a letter to you.

I was on watch with the Valorous Few today, and placed in defense of our friends, those with the beautiful voices. They apparently have fans in the sea as they do on land, for some terrible creatures were keen to do them harm.

You will be glad to know I am unhurt, and there were no casualties on our side. Princess Tikva collapsed from exhaustion, but was well-tended to by Lady Ianna, who is here.

I will write next when I can. I hope all is well at home.

Yours always,

C.T.

Relationship Note on Eirene

Warm congratulations are due to Prince Cicero and Lady Eirene on their marriage. Although the wedding may not have been a complete surprise, the union of two people and two Houses under the gaze of Limerance is always a benefit to the Compact.

Relationship Note on Orazio

The Legate of Concepts and I do not always see eye-to-eye on the places where the Faith and governing intersect. (I would not claim to be even conversant with him on matters of Faith alone.)

But we always have a frank exchange of views, he and I, and I come away stronger and more thoughtful for having spoken with him. We should all be so fortunate to have an interlocutor as sharp and as patient as Father Orazio in our lives.

I am pleased that Duchess Belladonna has clarified the status of her two wards. Whatever the exact course of events that led up to the erroneous proclamation, I am glad the matter has been put right and the Peerage remains as strong as it was before the flurry of journals on the matter.

Relationship Note on Reigna

Countess Reigna sums my views on the matter well. To take a child into one's home and raise and care for them is a show of Gild's charity. But the peerage is a limited group for good and sufficient reasons and to expand it to those who are not born to the honor without exceptional cause uncalled for.

Duchess Belladonna ensures that these children will not be raised by a monster who has forsaken not just Gloria's honor but also the love of the entire Pantheon. For that, she is to be applauded.

But for weakening the peerage, I cannot concur. Countess Reigna no doubt speaks for many, and I find the vigor of the dissent to be perplexing.

Relationship Note on Percephon

My cousin Percephon and I are quite different. He is a scholar, and a highly ranked one at that. I am a soldier. He enjoys his books and his study. I enjoy my sword, armor, and the Gauntlet.

And yet. As we realize we are aligned against the same enemies in our own ways, we have grown closer. And so I was pleased to sign the proclamation announcing Percephon's betrothal to Lady Khanne Halfshav.

Yes, an alliance between the Telmarch and Whitehall will bring more trade and security. But it will also bring my cousin joy. And that makes me happy, as well.

As I prepare to ship to Setarco, my thoughts drift north to my family, friends, and allies in the King's Own. My brother took service as one of the Hundred and the Lord Commander has been a friend and mentor to me. I therefore feel myself as a sort of kin to the greatest knights in all of Avrum, even though it is perhaps presumptive to claim such a thing.

Be well, Sir Tovell Telmar and all of your stalwart companions. Gild grant you safe travel; Gloria fortify you with bravery; Limerance hold you fast to your oaths; Vellichor bestow wisdom on you; Lagoma salve your every wound. Be as honorable as I know you are. And we will reunite in Arx when our deeds are done.

To those deploying against the Pirate King:

My research reveals that the Pirate King's minions are "ravenous" for victory and that that they will not fight like a conventional army. We cannot rely on them to break ranks or weaken in the face of even overwhelming force and losses.

Some already know this. But it is a warning I place in the journals for all soldiers who will see combat. May the gods bless each of you.

Relationship Note on Cristoph

As we prepare for war, the Telmarch has been buoyed by the friendship and support of its sister duchies. A month ago, the Telmarines drilled with the brave soldiers of Westrock Reach under the direction of Sir Thorley. This last fortnight, they worked with the efficient men and women of Artshall under the direction of Duke Cristoph. We have learned from each other and have built both martial strength and lasting ties. I am proud to train and to fight alongside them.

Relationship Note on Reigna

I am overjoyed at Countess Reigna's appointment as master of the Physicians Guild. She has been a force for healers inside of Arx, and will serve with distinction in the role.

Between Countess Reigna's appointment as guildmaster and her husband's appointment as commander in the Ministry of Defense, the Keatons are quite the power couple in the Capital.

Relationship Note on Preston

I, too, am troubled by Sir Preston's vague impugning of the faithfulness of the Oathlands nobility. Those I know of are god-fearing men and women and even those who follow other ways have a healthy respect for the Faith and Faith militant.

We welcome the Templars' swords, honor the gods, and do our duty.

Our troops are raised. The Blackram and their vassals have committed just over half of their soldiers to our campaign against the Pirate King and Telmar has pledged the same to our liege, the Great House Valardin.

Duke Arn will attend the military meetings on behalf of the Telmarch while I continue to oversee the muster.

I pray to all the gods above for my men's safety and my own courage and adherence to duty.

Relationship Note on Mia

Countess, we would always be delighted to host you in the Telmarch. My cousin Etienne (now the archlector of Gild) has drilled into me what an honor it is to welcome guests into one's home, and the Great Red Wall of the Telmar Keep would welcome you and your party should you ever find yourself in the Oathlands.

But in the mean time, you are always very welcome to the Telmar Tower here in Arx. We are overdue for dinner, wouldn't you say?

Our meetings with the Blackram leadership and their counties have gone extraordinarily well. Armed with the Playwright Bastien's letters and assisted by Lord Percephon and Lord Ansel, we have secured ample commitments of troops and material from Cloudspine and its vassals. Even the Duke himself took several meetings, speaking well about the ancient vows that bound the Telmarch to the Cloudspire.

In the Greenwood and Blancbier, too, the counties have answered the call. I am glad for the efforts of my dearest wife, Lady Monique, in support of her ancestral home, and how well she complimented the efforts of the past and present Voices, Prince Fiarcha and Lady Eirlys. And Lady Sorrel Wyrmguard has served admirably as a Voice of her House, even as she focuses herself on other duties.

Our task will not be easy. But we will have every sword and ship one could reasonably ask for at our disposal.

Telmar fears no enemy.

Relationship Note on Tomwell

I had the distinct pleasure of accompanying my wife to Lord Tomwell's surprise birthday party thrown by his brother. Lady Ianna gifted Lord Tomwell a beautiful harp, which he played with equal skill.

All in all, a lovely evening with the Learys.

As one of the Duke's representatives, I was delighted to see the Laurents' melee tournament go so well. The Gauntlet is among the finest training grounds and open to all seeking to improve their skills.

Congratulations to the Sword of Westrock on his victory and to the Laurents on an event well-organized.

It was an absolute pleasure to meet some of the Rivenshari at the Greenmarch dinner last eve. Although I could not remain for the entirety, it is always good to welcome those new to the Capital and extend what help I can as a representative of their liege's liege.

The Rivenshari have suffered greatly as one of the Compact's newest houses. But I have no doubt that, with commitment and skill, they will rise once more.

My project on the theory of war continues.

If you are a commander of troops in the Compact (or even a soldier in the Compact with deep theories of war) and would like to be interviewed, do send a messenger. I would be most glad to talk to you.

The recent scandal reminds me that, whatever my conflict with another Peer, it is to be resolved diplomatically and honorably.

The commons give we nobles their toil, talent, and treasure. In return, we give them calm, unified leadership in tumultuous circumstances.

Honor demands we uphold our end of the bargain.
