Relationship Note on Arn

He's back.

And already, something's not to the Duke's liking. Or, rather, several things are not to the Duke's liking.

Nothing's ever to his liking.

Relationship Note on Arn

Duke Arn Telmar is not someone I know particularly well just yet, if I might ever. His Grace, Prince Edain, asked me to make sure the general was properly outfitted not long after the latter's arrival in Arx. I quickly learned that the duke is a direct man, when he visited to discuss the commission, with seemingly little patience for dancing around a topic. His reputation marks him as a man of import, of course, but what impressed me was seeing him in conversation with Prince Edain. I have every faith in His Grace, but knowing that Duke Arn has his back is comforting. Watching the general with our prince has lead me to like and respect the man, little that I truly know him.

Relationship Note on Arn

You ever read the Valor of Steel by.. fuck, I can't remember the name. T something, I think. No? No, no, if you wanna look it up you can do it on your own time. Anyway. Its a book about some of the great contemporary commanders of Valardin, and chief among them is Arn Telmar. It gives some brief biographies and then lists some of their most notable battles. I'll admit I glossed over most of it. What can I say, I'm not much of a reader.

One sequence did stick with me, though. It describes Arn in his shining fucking armor, leading his cavalry in a great and glorious charge at the Battle of the Horn, and in one glorious heroic swoop winning the day. So when I sat down to have a drink with the fellow, I had to ask him about it.

I liked his version better.

Relationship Note on Arn

After a run in with Victus at a tournament, Hammar found out Duke Arn is not his father. Hammar still wants to talk to the Duke and get to know him better, but he is a bit sad that after their first meeting in the City center when Arn asked him about his armor, that the man is not actually his father. He still doesn't know why Arn called him son, though!

Relationship Note on Arn

Hammar was talking with Marcas and some others in the forum when this old warrior came up and asked Hammar about his new armor Ida made him. The man liked Hammar's armor, and then called Hammar son! Hammar is pretty sure he's a Duke's son. Hammar was told the man calls a lot of young warriors Son, so this Duke has a lot of son's. Hammar was so excited to find his dad!

Relationship Note on Arn

He openly doesn't approve of my choice of knighthood, and argues and argues about it, but it's nothing I'm not accustomed to. Many women serve capably and honorably as knights in the service of House Valardin, and despite it, I can tell it's not doubt on my talents- it's (misplaced) paternal feelings of an old warrior afraid of seeing another protege meet tragedy on the field. He's a surprisingly good man, despite his reputation, full of a carefully concealed concern for House and family. He was loyal to my father and it has cost him almost everything, meeting any sacrifice without flinching. He's a reminder of a very peculiar kind of honor, one often forgotten- the type of men who will surrender anything, even their good name or their ideals, in absolute service to their lord. Not a proper knight, perhaps, but our family could do worse.
