Relationship Note on Joscelin

Wait - I thought my purpose was to entertain you? Now we have a quandary! Gosh. As for my stag life, it's only because I sleep like a starfish. No one can put up with it for long, apparently. At least not from someone five feet ten it would seem.

I will continue entertaining you, though, because it entertains me too!

Relationship Note on Samantha

Truly, I never endeavor to do harm that is not repairable. Harm at all, really, but that's hard to avoid in terms of pugilism. As well, having been married myself once, I do know the importance of husbands. Not that I ever needed help opening jars, mind you, but certainly you need your Marquis for a number of far more important things than that. I do promise to be as careful as I can, as it is truly an honor to be asked to teach at all.

Relationship Note on Rymarr

The Marquis of House Deepwood has had my respect, truly, since our first or second meeting when he was not just yet Lord Commander of the King's Own. He is, as always, generous with his words in regard to my skills for which I continue to be greatly honored as well as humbled. I'm always grateful that someone of such renown might seek me out for a learning spar.

That said, introductions to one's ancestors is never guaranteed with lessons. It's in the fine print.

I am a rather chatty sort as of late. Or writey sort, if you please. A few things that need remark so I might look back and appreciate this wordy time I'm having.

Joscelin - you are already pretty much my platonic wife. I've no plans to ever marry again for real, with a band on my finger and having to share my big comfy bed for more than a night, but truly. I would do terrible damage to anyone who might hurt you.

Said pretty much platonic wife and my brother, Austen, have met. I smile just imaging how this might have went. Chuckle, even. Two people I could not love more and yet so different.

Lessons. I don't give them often, to be honest. Unless, I suppose, one counts apprentices and really? Such teaching is paid back to me in spades by passing on methods and seeing them grow to be smiths in their own right. That is more precious than any silver, gold, or platinum dukes. The few lessons I do give, I don't charge for because I am no legend. I have not leveled a wall with my fists, nor can I forge alaricite. Perhaps well-knownish in the city of Arx now, but no legend like those who have been briefly mentioned. Also a commoner, which might negate all debate anyhow.

I don't really have an opinion, I suppose. If you give zero effs what people think? Have at it, I say.

I'm not especially good with words but wanted to put something to journal, for as little weight as it may carry beyond myself. My oaths as a knight mean I will willingly give my life should a situation dictate it, regardless of who or what might necessitate as much. That said, there are some that I would follow into a fire even beyond my oaths; my children, my brother Austen, His Grace Prince Edain and his family, Guildmaster Joscelin, and any number of the Keatons, though Count Kael and Countess Reigna especially. I don't particularly care about their humor.

Relationship Note on Veronica

Lady Veronica Keaton is beyond kind with her words regarding my work. I am always humbled when someone trusts me to forge a blade that will be the thing between them and the ills of this world, considering the many talented weaponsmiths in Arx. No debt is owed, of course, and it continues to be my honor to make sure those of House Keaton are armed when they request as much.

Mugging is such a strong word. Strongly suggest release into someone else's possession, maybe. Maybe! But moot now.

Relationship Note on Joscelin

And since I have gotten into the vaguely way-back wagon, or am simply feeling generally nostalgic, I need to mention the first gift of jewelry I received while in Arx. A stunning pair of silver disc earrings carved with dragonflies and snapdragon flowers, a gift from the Guildmaster some time before she was Guildmaster and I may have even known how to bend high quality steel. I have worn them since and love them. Recently, she gifted me again - another pair of silver earrings with that exceptional Gemecittan quartz that boasts such a variety of hues! I love them as much as the first pair.

Relationship Note on Edain

When I first came to Arx to work as one of the Valardin smiths, so generously sponsored by His Grace, Prince Edain, I had spent most of my years repairing plows and simpler weapons before focusing on the pugilism circuits. While in the city, I learned to work high quality steel, then rubicund, and eventually diamondplate. My first high quality weapon was a warhammer for Duke Arn Telmar. My first rubicund weapon was a bow for Princess Deva Redrain. I have known diamondplate for some time now, but with such talented smiths in the city who can work even beyond that, I suppose no one thought to ask. Which was a relief, really. Until His Grace.

I take a great deal of what I make to heart. I sweat not just in the shop, but in my mind for just the right touch, that particular hue that will conjure up images of their homeland or something of meaning. It has just always meant a lot to me to craft something of meaning, when someone has trusted me to put something between them and the ills of the world in to their hands. But I do go on, as I often tend to do.

My first diamondplate weapon is a spear for Prince Edain. The design is based on a weapon I had made him some years ago, which has always been my favorite, until perhaps this one. It seems fitting somehow, that the first weapon of this last metal I plan to master to be in the hands of the man who gave me the opportunity to come to Arx.

I hope she burns our enemies to cinders.

Relationship Note on Eirene

At least it also kept us busy stocking our shops rather than getting into the sorts of mischief that have us delivered to your doorstep in wheelbarrows? Hahaha! Not really funny, but I didn't want you to think I was terribly serious either. I've not forgotten what I promised to make! Just a bit behind on such things.

Relationship Note on Joscelin

I say we sit in our rocking chairs drinking whiskey and yelling at the new apprentices that come by to get off our lawn. Not that that'd be /new/, necessarily, but we could get a lot drunker if we're not going to do work later!

Also, I love you like family and think you are amazing no matter what you may or may not be doing in this life.

Your Grace, that may be my favorite joke of all time. Ha! Definitely in the top ten.

Because he's a liar! Hahaha. Yes, Scholar, please put in the ayches and the ayes all squished together.

Two pieces of string have had a very long day. Terrible, even. They walk into a tavern and the bartender looks at them suspiciously. He says "Sorry, lads, we don't serve your kind here." So the pieces of string walk out again. They try this again and again and at each tavern, they receive the same treatment.

They're sitting in the gutter outside and feeling really down and thirsty when one piece of string says, "Hey! I've got an idea to get me into the bar."

So he starts twisting and turning, wriggling this way and that, pulling out a few threads here and there. His buddy is looking at him and thinks he's gone completely nuts.

Then the piece of string walks back into the bar. The bartender looks at him a little suspiciously again and says, "Hey, you're not a bit of string, are you?"

The piece of string replies, "No. I'm a frayed knot!"

It's just not all pun and games in the Oathlands. (Scholar, please borrow one of Princess Agatha's HAHs with the big letters for that 'hah'- yes, like that. Get it? Pun? Fun? I am one of the funniest people I know.)

Well. I guess the cat does not need to get punched. For knighthood, at least. I have her brother and he's quite pleasant, so I'm assuming he got all the nice from that litter.

I hope someone punched Lillybelle in the jaw, as is traditional upon the honor of knighthood. Perhaps it is an Oathlands tradition, but I will be rather disappointed nonetheless.

* As dictated by one Apprentice Rigby of Ferron Arms & Armor *

That could have gone better, likely. I need to sleep for a week.

* Said apprentice squeaks a bit of indignation, muttering about that's all she said to write and yes it's leading yet vague, but he's /just/ an apprentice, by oaths and steel. *

Relationship Note on Kael

Count Kael Keaton - truly, the entire Keaton family - humble me every time they come to the shop and have faith in me to forge a weapon. To be asked and /trusted/ to put a piece of metal between one of his loved ones and the dark shadows of the world is an honor I can hardly describe. The city boasts some of the finest weaponsmiths from across Arvum and I am so grateful that the Keatons choose me to do such work for them.

Also? That the Count occasionally lets me get away with a quip here and there, though I try not to push my luck too much in that regard!

Truly, though, I am blessed for such kind words and faith in my craft.

Relationship Note on Austen

I suppose, technically, the Iron Guard are slated to take my brother. I receive nothing in return, really, except maybe exceptional pride in the fact that he is training to be one of the famed Watchman who keep our city safe.

Not that I'd turn down some magic beans after the fact.

Relationship Note on Daemon

"It takes more than a flesh wound to fell a Knight of the Oathlands."

Ah, but our hearts. I think, perhaps, because we champion and we fight, we open our whole beings to the world. We embrace the fighting, the blood, the pain, so that another might not suffer so harshly. We face the thousands to save thousands. We take on their fear and their nightmares as our own burdens. It is, perhaps, as much of being a knight as swearing the oaths. It is living the oaths.

I was not at Stormwall, or even Setarco, and I know I can never ever feel, see, or truly understand what was faced there. I am sorry the shadows still linger on your heart and thoughts. I hope time will not so much fade the memory, but soften the hurt if even just a little bit.

If it means anything, I think you are strong enough and believe in you.

Relationship Note on Joscelin

Here are a few that I grew up with in the small hamlet outside of Sanctum:

Itchy Hands - If your right hand itches then you’ll be receiving some silver, but don't scratch it or you keep the silver from coming! If your left palm is itching, that means you’ll be paying someone else silver. That one? You can scratch.

Itchy Nose - You're going to kiss a fool.

Itching/Burning Ears - "Left for love, right for spite." If your ears are itching, no matter which one, it means someone is talking about you.
