I've never been more impressed with someone else's training of one under their care. Sir Silas Mercier has done well by his squire Arron. Seriously, if I ever have more children or take up a squire, I don't think I'd trust even myself to do such a good job as he. I hope he treats that boy to a fine set of armor.

Also, I think I owe the poor lad a kiss.

The Concodral Melee is tomorrow! Given the joy I had with the previous competition, I'm excited to sign up for this one. The rules are unusual enough and perhaps I'll learn a thing or two.

The Concordal Melee. Sir Silas was kind enough suggest it and I am happily interested. The discussion I had with him has me convinced it's going to be quite fun.

Perhaps they'll lend me a stool long enough to punch Fergus Redrain in the face! Or even the Shav, Viktarkim!

Hmm. Or I can sit on the shoulders of my partner. Ooh, that could be fun.

Relationship Note on Dawn

I met her earlier this week and I was surprised. A little impressed as well. She was difficult to read, put up a wall of smiles and hidden scrutiny.

This isn't a bad idea as the ruler-presumptive. Necessary, more than likely. I commend her for the skill of it.

It will take a great deal of strength and patience for a person to govern us through the days to come. I hope she is up the the task. Someone needs to be.

The Explorer's Society.

I've met with Aislin and Cara in the past, and I expressed interesting in attending this meeting. I am curious of what goes on, the purpose behind the meeting, and of the group. I am looking forward to attending.

What's appropriate to bring to such a thing? Honeycakes? Mead?

So very bright and thoughtful and sweet. I could eat her brains like honey-ed jam.

[Serafine Velenosa attended the appointed transcribing time inebriated, and she didn't speak but she did sing-]

I had me a girl
Who taught me those things
A woman should know
Down, down on my knees.
I’d beg and I’d plead
To learn a little bit more.
Oh that woman taught me to pray,
I saw Elysium every day.
Gods, she could-

[it becomes crooning, the subject's eyes close-]

I, I had me a boy
Who buttoned me down.
Threw me a line
He, he washed me as clean
As a sinner could be.
Showed me the light,
Ooo that boy, he taught me to pray,
But for all of his spit-shinin’ ways
Gods, he could.

[More crooning-]

I had me a girl,
Like gray-wreathed smoke.
She came and she went,
I slipped through his hands
To my back door-man,
Under his chin.
Oh that woman taught me to pray
But for all her wandering ways
She could.

[Subject's eyes open, she smiled, and headed out the door]

[Scholar's note: She said she'd be back, the song is recognized as an old minstrel's poem set to music and popular among Velenosan soldiers.]

the painted flesh of something tender
a somber blue trail on copper skin
split like fruit with ancient lines
to tease and stroke and sing like sin

to slide along the pale expanse
the field of pleasure so long denied
a heart beat from a savored demise
and bleed with velvet made of hide

he sings for me, this pretty bird
breathes my name and claws my hips
lines to blue roads mapped now cut
but taken sweet the curses from lips

pet, a token, a moment's rest clean
satisfying the ache and rush to burn
it's not his face that blinds the eyes
not the distraction for me to churn

verdant fields of peace, surrendered
gaping sighs, crowned flowers so
steel that rusts in trust and peace
abandoned old blades without a foe

to ache for hands that are only ash
to savor lips that may never be
visions sear and rip, dismember
the very best I had left of me.

Shortest fight since I moved back to the city. Wow. The man took my breath away, not once but -twice-.

The last few days have been full of sparring, and the good kind. I fought side by side with the Lady General, Calypso, and after speaking in the language of eyebrows and glances, we decided to team up against the Count Maximilian, who's eyes wandered but his sword was sure. Too sure.

It was a grand fight, he was better than I anticipated, given that he ogled as much as he swung. Perhaps he thought me less a threat, because I am shorter than he? Silly boy, I hope you know better now.

In the end, Calypso and I drove him to his knees and I wedged myself between his blade and her stumbling form, of the three I had the least wounds, otherwise I'd have taken no liberties. Calypso is a fine fighter, a general and an honorable woman. I was proud, after the Count hit the dirt, to salute her and call it a draw. I suspect the advantage was in my favor, to be underestimated as the unknown. Calypso could have beaten me, aye, but if I had her, I'd have been soured with that 'victory'.

Keeping my word is important to me lest it serve to fester into mistrust. I deal with enough malice and judgement these days, I'll not give anyone cause to truly think I deserve it. At least not in my eyes.

Relationship Note on Dafne

The potential in this young woman is untapped, and I saw a glimpse of what she's cap able of this evening.

If I were to take a protege, it would be Iovita, of course.

But I can have more than one, couldn't I? And Dafne has the potential to be a whirling dirvesh in a sea of dancers.

Relationship Note on Natalia

I've been hearing for weeks about this young woman, this Flower of House Grayson, decorating people like an artist might a canvas, and as shocking as my peers might think it, I enjoy such moving works of art.

As such, I've taken to asking her for advice on my wardrobe.

Don't look so surprised. Even warriors paint their faces before a battle, dancers touch up their costumes, and a queen adjusts her crown. When in Lyceum, as they say, do as the Lycene's do?

There's a similar quote about a wolf among sheep, but I'd hate for anyone to get the wrong impression.

The designs we came up with should be flattering and fitting, lest anyone forget who and what I am.

Relationship Note on Viktarkim

It's good to speak to someone who comes of the People, though from what I sense, his kin aren't like the ones I loved.

Still, fighting with him was sheer joy, and the man is better with a blade than he knows. Caught a break and got under my guard, and how he managed that at the last minute when he at least a foot on me? Most impressive, a satisfying loss, if there is such a thing.

Not as satisfying as Pietro, of course, but in that situation, I lose -after- he does. And it's not really losing then, is it?
