Jeffeth wields Silverfall, a diamondplate longsword.

Camp has long since been broken. It's a doozy of a camp, too. The Mercy Gerard Davin and his entourage of healers don't travel light. There are several carts of supplies, not to mention the train of pack mules that follow those carts, and the healers themselves. Nine, and Mercy Gerard himself; some on horseback, some not, travelling the rutted track through the Oathlands close to Greenhaven, green forests sprouting up on either side.

The afternoon is waning into early evening, though the autumn sun is still out and the birds chirp pleasantly in and amongst the trees. It's idyllic. So very peaceful.

Reese is along for the trip while geared out for a possible fight. She is on foot right now and not far from her hunting hound who is often at her side as she travels. Her raven is soaring overhead. Reese seems to be in a relaxed sort of mood and while she is trying to be alert, she shows no sighs of especially expecting danger. It just another trip escorting people through the forest for the princess. She is somewhere near the front to the side of one of the carts. She has a horse with her, but isn't mounted at the moment.

It's good to be back out on the road!

Finally back out where he belongs, Jeffeth is walking along the road in the dead middle. His dark red armor reflecting just a touch of the fading sunlight. The rubicund clanking against itself as the behemoth of a man marches along. The huge man in turn leads a huge horse. His gigantic draft horse is lead easily with one hand behind him, one of the mercies perched on his horse's saddle.

The big man is humming lightly, as he has often on this trip. Every time someone suggests to stop, he does stop, and then forgets fifteen minutes later and starts humming again. Jeffeth if anything, is happy to be out on the road.

Cora is in professional mode, her eyes watching for anything out of the ordinary as she walks along. No horse for this gal, nope she loves horses but doesn't trust herself to ride one in combat being more used to riding ships than anything equine, instead she happily walks along on foot.

Thena, a near-card-carrying member of the constant vigilance club, prowls up and down the cart line on foot as they go along. She's turned out in plain but serviceable steel mail, a departure from her usual leather. She tends to be a woman of few words and no humming out on the roads, but she is constantly checking in with members of the party.

Jeffeth hums louder.

Jeffeth checked charm + performance at difficulty 15, rolling 10 higher.

Bree checked charm + performance at difficulty 15, rolling 2 lower.

Bree may be vigilant but if soe she's hiding it behind that brilliant smile. She takes a deep breath and exhales in a self-satisfied way as she rides along, eyes turned upward toward the sky overhead. She joins in Jeffeth's humming then, catching the tune immediately as she travels. The fact she isn't quite as good at keeping it as Jeffet hhimself matters not at all. Perhaps she hasn't even noticed.

Harper walks alongside some of the carts, resting her hand easily on the hilt of her sword in a fairly relaxed manner. Staying towards the edge of the road, she is mostly paying attention to the woods near her, watching for any signs of trouble. She doesn't seem quite as enthusiastic with the march as Jeffeth, muttering softly to herself as he and Bree start a chorus of humming.

Ylva is petting a mule, walking along, a hand on the side of the mule's neck, stroking it quietly as they both head in the same direction. The Mercy is not at all equipped for war or much of anything other than healing and petting animals. She's in her white robes, a little less than white about the hem, and a satchel containing some of her stuff. Short legs force her to take quicker strides to keep up with the rest, but she seems to be holding up well. The humming makes her smile.

Bree wields a dark rubicund backsword chased with golden gilt.

If Bree maybe not knowing this certain tune or being maybe a bit off key bothers Jeffeth, one certainly couldn't tell. The big man looks elated as Bree chimes in with him. He continues to hum, but gets a little more intense about it. Getting more complicated with his rhythym and trying to harmonize with Bree. It's that thing when you and a friend are singing together and gosh it's so much fun. If anyone else heard, well they might not appreciate it at msuh. Jeffeth however, is a beaming a brilliant smile as he moves to walk alongside Bree. Instantly best friends now.

Mercy Davin gives Jeffeth a look as he starts humming again, and Bree as she joins in. It's a look that says 'does anyone have cotton for my ears?' The man really isn't very warm and fuzzy. In fact, he's terse and sometimes rude, but he's got magic fingers and every village and town they've passed through has been better off for he and the Mercies traveling with him, not to mention the Knights who travel with them.

"Are we almost to the next town?" the elder Mercy asks Thena as she passes by, not even bothering to conceal his grumpy tenor. "This forest goes on /forever/!"

Thena does not hum. But she doesn't seem inclined to stop others from humming, at least not on this perfectly calm not-unusual expedition. She flashes a wry little smile at Harper as she passes and then is a'prowling past Mercy Davin, but pulls up when the grumpy man addresses her. "I'm not quite sure," she admits, looking around for someone who might have a better idea than she does.

Reese continues to make her way along with the party of mercies still in a relaxed mood, still near the front and still being rather quiet even as the singing starts. She looks out into the forest and sucks in a soft breath of concern. She then starts to head in Thena's direction, moving with her cat-like grace. She is likely on her way to report something to the Solace Commander. She seems tensely wary now, her hand moving to touch the handle of her blade.

Ylva pats the mule as she goes, then raises her head and looks around, taking in the small party and the scenery with a content expression. "Oh, that's strange, everything's gone quiet," she remarks. And while her tone is cheerful, a small frown sets in. "Maybe the birds don't care for humming."

Harper quirks a half-grin to Thena as she passes, then goes back to staring out at the woods. If there is anything there she likely misses it as she shoots another annoyed look at Jeffeth and mutters, "Sure wish I had an extra sock." Glancing at the elder mercy, her grin widens a bit at his cranky declaration. Hearing Ylva's comment though she quickly goes back on alert and looks back out towards the forest.

"...Birds always like humming," Bree replies slowly. She stops short long enough to glance back at Ylva and draw a deep breath. "I don't..." She pauses for a second. "I don't see anything but you should stick close to me, Ylva. Okay?" There's a hint of iron behind that cheerful tone but the smile Bree wears is still infectiously light. One might even miss her hand shifting to the hilt of her sword.

Happily humming still, and even starting to slap against his leg now to really drum up the beat, Jeffeth pauses as he looks out into the woods. His hum starts to fade off, a light frown. But then he's humming again just as loudly. However, Jeffeth picks up his pace a little bit to part from Bree. Sorry Bree. Nearing a wagon, he goes to beat his fist against the side of the wagon, three times. THUNK THUNK THUNK. Following the thunks he purses his lips and lets out a low whistle to his compatriots. May sound like he's just continuing his song, but he gives a knowing glass to Bree, then Coraline, then Thena. Hand goes to rest on the pommel of silverfall.

Reese looks over to Ylva, nodding in response to the Mercies words and seeming to agree with such. Maybe she noticed that as well. "Yeah." She says in a soft one word response. Reese keeps her gloved hand on the handle of her blade and heads back toward near the front, all grave, somber and watchful now.

While Cora doesn't notice whatever others do, she does notice Jeffeth and his signal, drawing her sword she prepares for action. If it isn't needed she might feel silly but better safe than sorry.

Thena's dark eyes track to Ylva as she speaks, the corners of her mouth pulling down a little at the Mercy's words. She then tilts her head at Reese in silent query, but her attention is pulled away again by Jeffeth's thumping. She doesn't change pace or demeanor noticeably, but one hand comes to rest lightly on the hilt of her diamondplate dagger.

Nothing happens, except for Mercy Davin's frown growing several sizes too big for his face at both Thena's answer and Jeffeth's loud humming. The other Mercies seem to tolerate his grumping well, continuing to converse easily amongst each other and the knights accompanying them. Whatever undercurrents, they don't pick up on them, though one gives Jeffeth a weird look. "I... don't think there's anyone in there," she offers quizzically, to his knocking.

Reese looks over to Thena and then she tries to murmur softly to her, hoping her voice doesn't travel too far. "Its between dead quiet like this when the blight and the abyss animals were around in the Gray Forest. Don't know if if this is that, but its never dead quiet like this in a forest, unless something is wrong."

Harper slips her blade out of the scabbard as quietly as she can, holding it down at her side for now. She angles back towards the wagons, then drops back taking a slightly protective position near some of the mercies. Head tilting to try to hear Reese's comments as she does.

Reese peeks over to Harper. She gives her a faint and somber smile and then repeats her words softly in Harper's ear or tries to anyways.

Despite that big ol' frown on his face, Thena continues to keep pace with Mercy Davin. "We'll check the maps once we get past this little bit," she tells the man calmly, then nods to Reese with a little grimace.

Ylva glances over in Bree's direction. "Always?" she asks at first, then blinks and starts glancing around the woods again. "I don't see anything either. I'm sure I'm safe with Master Carrotsworth," she rubs the mule's flank, " but fine." She moves aside from the mule and lets her footsteps fall in line with Bree's, shrugging as she starts to rummage through her satchel.

Cora keeps her sword against her leg where it is at the ready but clearly not needed right this second. She keeps her eyes open, ears straining to get anything she can, of course the lack of disonent humming REALLY helps with that!

"Always," Bree replies shortly. "I'm supposed to keep you safe." ANd everyone else, of course, but that isn't completely relevant at the moment. When others declare they haven't notice anything Bree looks about tensely once more, her hand on the hilt of her sword. She takes a slow, deep breath and holds it for a few seconds before nodding once. "if you see anything else, tell me. It might be nothing, but... When is it ever?" So much for the singing, apparently.

"That's alright." Jeffeth calls out to the mercy, flashing a bright smile. Jeffeth releases his horse he was guding, encouraging Friend to follow along the line. The big man crosses the column of travelers. "Permission to take a p--" The large knight furrows his brows and glances around at the mercies present. "Permission to take a pee, Grandmaster." The big man calls out.

Once permission is given, the behemoth lumbers off the the road, surprise, not really to take a pee. Though Jeffeth does saunter off like he's going to relieve himself, but instead is trying to get a bit closer to get another look off in the treeline.

There's a yell to break the total silence. It's a war cry, coming from the tree line only fifteen feet away from the track. And there's another one, from the other side, high and shrill. And another, materializing from the path in front of them, some distance away, responding to the first two.

From the trees, figures in steel armor, wielding rubicund blades burst forth, at least four on either side, and the same number up ahead.

Jeffeth checked dexterity + survival at difficulty 40, rolling 4 higher.

Thena waves Jeffeth off laconically, still sauntering along next to Mercy Davin...well, so much for that. When the yell rings out she immediately draws her diamondplate dagger, then reaches for her steel one with her off hand. "Halt the carts," she shouts. "Mercies take cover!"

Jeffeth checked dexterity + medium wpn at difficulty 20, rolling 33 higher.

Cora positions herself to defend the nearest group of Mercies so that at least this section is secure and places herself to be a wall, sword now at the ready.

Reese sucks in a sharp breath as warriors emerge form the tree line. She draws her own sivery pink weapon even while wearing Thena's words. She takes a a defensive position near the front of the party, getting ready to defend and fight.

Reese wields Devotion, a silvery pink alaricite short sword.

Harper does her best to herd the mercies to a place of cover near the wagons, keeping a close eye out for anyone approaching as she does. She bellows out surprisingly loud for her small size, "Move! Get over there now! Ya heard the Grandmaster! Move!" Taking up a place near Cora she gets ready to defend the mercies.

Harper wields Knife, a grosse messer.

As Jeffeth is pretending to take his pants off Jeffeth's brows arch. Ah crap.

Silverfall sings out, everyone is yelling out behind him. But he's out here on an island. As a man charges him, Jeffeth just barely manages to kneel out of the way of a running strike. The Knight Lieutenant quickly retaliates swinging his blade into his charger, opening the man's side up, blood spraying off to the side. "I'll be fine!" Jeffeth yells out. "Worry only about--" Woah! Jeffeth is quickly parrying another rubicund blade flying at his face. "About the mercies! Worry about the mercies!" The man before him is seriously wounded, but still standing.

Save for the two that stay to take care of Jeffeth, one now seriously wounded, the rest charge the Mercies caravan and the defenders. They aren't much for talking, these steel-clad men and women, and they look rough, every last one of them. They fight as if they've had training, too. Strange, that. Almost... knightly.

Ylva freezes up at the sound of the yelling, glancing towards the trees with very wide eyes, an apple in hand freshly taken from her satchel. "Oh no," she gasps, and at all the ringing commands darts off running to take cover behind the nearest wagon. Possibly even under the nearest wagon as she hunkers down low, just in case.

Reese has her silvery blade drawn and she strikes at one of the armed foes charging at the carts. Reese's blow lands true, getting past any armor and stabbing the man through a chink. The blade sinks into his flesh and when she draws it back, he falls to the ground and appears to be dead.

Harper eyes one of the armored men running towards her warily, waiting until the last minute then using her smaller size to crouch down and swing towards his legs trying to hamstring him. Giving him a solid wound on his leg she quickly twirls away from him and regains her feet, facing him. She stalks around him watching for another opening.

"These guys don't fight dirty," Thena calls out, but she does, and when one of the attackers gets too close to Mercy Davin she lashes out and whacks the fighter on the the arm with her steel dagger, only to plunge the other one into an armor chink when they whirl around. It doesn't kill them, but it probably ruins their day a bit.

"If you lay down your weapons, we don't have to--" Hggh. Jeffeth is pulling his head out of the way as the two men he is engagin with strike out again. Two blades fly at him, one on each side. The big knight flings down one gauntlet to bat away the blade on one side, his sword flying up to parry the second sword coming on the opposite ride. Jeffeth is then shoving his fist into the man on his right's nose, pushing him back for a moment. It gives him a moment to deal with the injured combatant.

Jeffeth parries again, hand going to catch his arm as the smaller man tries to swing his blade. Using his strength to overpower him, the big knight shoves his blade through the man's chest, pushing hard to drive it through. When he pulls back the man drops dead, and Jeffeth turns to face his remaining opponent. "Please. I don't want to kill you. Lay down your blade."

Ylva checked wits + survival at difficulty 20, rolling 7 lower.

As the steel clad warriors charge Bree offers them a sunny smile. Her sword is now in hand, rubicund ringing in the air as Bree takes it into a familiar grip. She closes on the nearest of the opposing warriors. The blade is not as long as that of her opponent, so when they close on her she first bats their sword aside. Once, then again, follows with a quick step that gets her close enough to thrust at their face. The person recoils and ends up with a nasty gash across her cheeks, blood obscuring their vision as Bree dances easily away from their attempted reply.

"You should surrender. I'd rathehr not kill you, but I'm afraid I can't let you past," Bree is saying good-naturedly as this happens. "Though it *is* a lovely day for a swordfight."

Seeing one of the attackers coming right for the ones she is protecting Cora slams her sword into the space between where the greaves and the breastplate meet causing a nice wound to the hip region but not enough to kill them, Kicking them to get the attacker away she prepares for the next one. Again silent and professional

The defenders are staunch, and clearly skilled. They slash and the parry and none of them takes a hit. But at the end of the day, there are just /so many/ attackers, and they're clearly well versed in armed combat. One gruff fighter spies Ylva and makes a charge for her, his rubicund blade raised, while the others try to get through to the rest of the frightened Mercies.

And they ignore all pleas not to fight. They seem immune to them, and fight on silently, almost... angrily. And they bleed, of course. And they die. But still they fight.

Reese continues to fight against the attackers charging at the mercies. She seems focused on this. She glance over to Ylva, but seeing that Coraline is heading that way, keeps Reese holding her spot near the front.

"Eeeeeeeee," is the sound Ylva makes when she spots someone charging at her, blade in hand, feet kicking at the ground as she falls back on her rump, caught by surprise. But she does have a very red and crispy and firm apple in her hand. She pulls back her arm. "Go away!" And then tosses the apple, which very gracefully spins through the air, bumps her assailant in the nose, then bounces off to end up skewered on his sword, which gives him pause.

As Ylva hits the attacker in the nose with her apple missile, it gives Cora time to tackle them from behind. Now on top of the armored figure she slams her sword pummel into the face area trying to knock the helm off and do some real damage.

Jeffeth checked perception at difficulty 20, rolling 9 lower.

Reese keeps near the front and keeps her focus on he incoming attacks. She charges at the nearest guy, driving her blade against his sword arm and sending the guy sprawling. He is alive, but seriously injured. She manages to dart to the side away from the blade of one who is attacking her. She blinks as the apple spins through the air and it gives the somber princess pause for such a moment. She seems relieved to see Coraline come to the rescue, but the battle ranges too quickly for words.

Harper continues to stalk around her attacker looking for an opening, continually moving. Seeing only a minimal one she tries to dart in and take a slash but only manages to barely knick his arm, doing very little harm before darting away. She narrowly misses the backswing of the attacker's blade, feeling the wind from it as it slashes just behind her back. She moves again to stalk around her attacker, every watchful for an opening.

Thena is a silent fighter and the unfamiliar mail doesn't seem to be slowing her up too much. When the man comes at her...or Davin...again she ducks his attack and drops to a crouch, going for a hamstring before unfurling to slash the man's throat. Next please!

Another body drops in front of Jeffeth. Having parried the incoming blow, an elbow was delivered to the woman's gut. And then Silverfall flew across her torso. Now that his private party is over the big man spares a brief moment down at the two dead bodies at his feet. He frowns lightly. But then is sprinting back to join the caravan, COMING GUYS, SORRY!

As Bree's opponent takes another overhanded swing at her the blonde lunges close. This time she lets the sword bounce off her armoured shoulder and graps her opponent by the left arm. She grinds a saboton into their foot as she shoves her backsword underneath the woman's arm and up through the gap beneath the shoulder. Her opponent, bleeding all over her bright steel armour, collapses to the ground with a clamorous thud. Then Bree whirls. "Ylva?" She's scanning for attackers but lacking an obvious threat Bree will launch herself at the man attacking Coraline.

Ylva checked dexterity + stealth at difficulty 15, rolling 1 lower.

They're dropping like steel-clad flies. Five find their ending upon the weapons of the defenders, though one is startled by an apple, in his defense. Seven remain, though only three in good health. One of those three spies Ylva before she can make it to safety, though of course, being behind Coraline has thus far proven to be very safe; he charges her, charges Coraline with a mighty bellow, his rubicund raised high. He's bigger than the others. Tougher. More skilled.

As she is busy pummelling the hell out of one dudes face, Cora finds the biggest armored dude in the whole group and as she watches the guy raises the sword to seriously take a chunk out of Cora.

Bree checked dexterity + dodge at difficulty 25, rolling 6 higher.

Reese continues to fight, taking out yet another attacker with a skilled swing of her silvery pink blade. This guy won't reveal much information, he is not even breathing.

Thump thump thump thump.

Just as the big man's blade is swinging at Coraline, a different big man comes flying in from the side. Smashing into the big man standing over Coraline, Jeffeth sends the man flying. Not off his feet, but enough to save Cora from getting a metal makeover. The man swings out at Jeffeth who steps back at the strike. Holding his blade up the Knight Lieutenant glances briefly over at Coraline. Just making sure she's okay. He gives a quick nod before looking at their opponent. "Together." Jeffeth rumbles looking at their opponent, blade helding up.

Stalking around her attacker in circles, moving constantly, Harper waits until she sees him stumble slightly then takes advantage of his slight dizziness from trying to turn to face her. In that moment, she darts in and deftly tries to slip her blade into a joint between plates of armor. As her blade finds a weak spot she grabs it with both hands and drives it home hard into his side. After pulling her blade free, she watches as the attacker falls down dead. Then she turns and looks around for the next attacker that seems to be heading to attack the mercies preparing to intercept if she can.

Standing Cora nods at Jeffeth, "Yes sir. And thanks." She stands side by side with Jeffeth ready for the next attack.

It's not easy to sneak around in white robes. Ylva tries, rolling over so she can crawl under the wagon. She is small enough to fit easily enough, but that bright white shape behind the wheels is clearly visible, a and now she has no fruit left to defend herself with. As people fall over around her, even if they are mostly assailants, the Mercy flinches and makes small yelping sounds, darting wide fearful eyes left and right, searching for a better hiding place.

"Everyone doing all right?" Thena calls without turning her head to actually look, trusting her people are holding things down behind her.

The massive man who almost disembowled Coraline manages a quick recovery, his reflexes incredible for a man of his size. He turns, letting out a roar, intent on taking on both Coraline and Jeffeth at once, the fury in him evident. Three injured fighters rally to his roar, redoubling their efforts, even though they're so massively outnumbered. They're not giving up, it seems.

Cora takes the big guy low going for up under his armor through the arm pit and into his heart. She even gives it a little twist for being a little so and so who tried to kill her ded. However her enemy is at least alive enough to try and block her sword from getting pulled out leaving a great opening for Jeffeth.

Thena takes a moment to readjust her grip on her blades just before the next attacker approaches. From the squishy death noises coming from the rest of the cart train she assumes the others have everything under control, and takes the armored man before her out. Finally, seeing no more from that direction, she turns to see what she's missed and lets out a long low whistle, clearly impressed.

Harper calls out at Thena's question, "Harper checkin' in, ma'am!" Seeing one of the attackers trying to rally to the big man, she darts towards him and throws her whole body into the attack, trying to take out his legs to knock him to the ground. Using her momentum, she swings around and her sword catches him across the head as he goes down leaving a deep gash in his skull as he falls to the ground dead.

And that opening is leapt upon. He heard Thena say something about leaving one alive. So Jeffeth's pommel flies wildly at the other big man's nose. Landing solidly against the man's nose, the combatant starts to reel and Jeffeth uses the opportuntiy to slam the pommel of his strike once more into the man's nose and then again. Then the man falls back, dead. Unfortunately his nose driven back up into his brain. The huge knight looks down with a light frown. "Bayweather and Thrax, fine." Jeffeth calls out, loudly for the roll call.

Bree is smiling brightly as she confronts this last man for their third circle about the clearing. He has a close-faced helm and well-made armour. "You've managing very well," she compliments her opponent as they go through the ritual of feint and counter feent, crossing blades and throwing punches that is an actual swordfight. A few kicks amount to nothing and neither quite manages to get a grip good enough to grapple. So when Bree's foe clears some space and lunges she reverses her sword, takes it by the blade, and steps aside from the thrust before clubbing her opponent in the head with her pommel. He staggers, so she hits him again. Then again and again, over and over until the man falls to the ground.

After this is done Bree kneels down beside her opponent and removes his helmet, shouting, "Mercy? He's alive and he needs a healer!" Bree broke the fellow's nose but not his skull. Multiple concussions aside he might even be alright.

Ylva has rolled a critical success!
Ylva checked intellect + medicine at difficulty 15, rolling 34 higher.

Reese joins in with the roll call. "Ribbons is fine." She says, crouching down near the three men she took down. One appears to beea alive but badly injured. "One is live near me, Dame Thena." She says, letting her know. She seems somber and thoughtful still as she looks over the fallen foes for any marketings or signisl or whatnot.

As the stream of assailants slows to a trickle, Thena pulls a piece of cloth from her belt and begins to carefully wipe her daggers, then her hands. "Keep an eye out for more, just in case. Let's make sure we have all the Mercies accounted for, clean up and move out."

Ylva stays under the wagon, cringing every time there's a clang or a raised voice nearby. But she watches everything, peering out past the nearest wheel to study the armored bodies as they hit the ground, each one punctuated with a gasp. Things eventually seem to quiet down. There's no more clanging or yelling, so she crawls out into the open, her white robes gone very much towards the off-white and brown. "Is everyone - oh!" She hears someone needs a healer and hurries over, opening up her satchel. Out come some clothes and bandages and an assortment of small flasks and needle and thread as she gets to work on staunching the bleeding and keeping him alive.

It's a blood bath. The Mercies don't like to see it. Mercy Davin makes his ire known with scathing glances and sharp barbs of 'All this life, wasted' et al. But most of the Mercies are just glad to be alive, and express their gratitude to the Knights of Solace and their companions, praising them for their brave protection.

One attacker in old steel remains alive, saved by the grace that is Ylva. But what will he be able to tell them, when he comes to?
