Relationship Note on Lore

Over the years I've have had both the opportunity and distinct honor to engage in the treasured tradition of patronage with a number of exemplary individuals. As we know all good things come to an end, but there is often a new beginning to follow it. A relationship may draw to a natural close or the learning party may simply have nothing more they can be taught from their patron. When one grows beyond, this creates a space to be filled and new one would eventually rise to take its place. Like most people, I expect the best of myself and those around me. To become a protégé of mine means accepting the many expectations I have of you, but they are no less than what I expect of myself. I am confident that my latest protégé will not disappoint in this regard.

It's with this cycle of renewal in mind that I write on the subject of my latest sponsorship. Following very thorough discussion on the subject and mutual agreement, Lore Artiglio and myself have determined that we should work together to our mutual and individual benefit. She has committed herself to the vast undertaking of dealing with my random bouts of eccentricity and for that she has my immense respect. My hope is that over a long enough period of time we will both have opportunity to grow as part of this partnership and become something greater than we were each day before the present.

By its nature patronage is an investment. It is often of the self; but also time, resources, attention, favor, connection, and more. Ostria, House Mazetti, and I stand to benefit from our arrangement and I will strive to open avenues to ever higher echelons on behalf of or in contribution toward Lore's own achievements and successes. As with any other investment that I hold, I stand prepared to offer nurturing care to promote its healthy growth or tenaciously safeguard it as circumstances dictate.

Relationship Note on Lore

Shadows of the Saffron: A Ballad, for a friend.

And of course, an obvious work of fiction and fantasy.

Far away in the Saffron Chain there are places maps can't find
Where the jungle's dense and the heat's intense and you might lose your mind
It's not a place for the faint of heart, and if you choose to go
Then be prepared to be a little bit scared, at what you might come to know

I'll tell you a story about our heroes fair, six of them at the fore:
Lovely clever Mirari, and the brave, well-traveled Lore
Lady Sunaia Ashford and the swordsman, our Lord Ian
Courageous Princess Adrienne, and Prince Aindre of the Grayson

They came to this bitter unknown edge looking for Arvani scouts
Explorers gone without a trace, no word, no whereabouts
The Chain is lovely, lush, and deep, and of its secrets, loathe to share
All those who step beneath the trees would do well to beware

The tangled trees were thick above but the jungle shared a clue
A bare footprint and the Princess asked, "How'd they lose a shoe?"
Lucky if that's all they'd lost, but the wild sets a snare
And the cursed forest asks a price of those who trespass there

Blood on the leaves and the birds in the trees were laughing overhead
Mocking our explorers as they found the bloody, broken, dead
An enemy Skal'dajan scout, so who could shed a tear --
Other than a sense of grave unease that some evil happened here?

Mirari climbed up into a tree, sure-footed, quick and strong
Only to quickly realize that something there was very wrong
'You fools, outsiders, sorry things,' the jungle seemed to say
'I will break you and unmake you, child, and you'll at my roots decay.'

Trapped as can be in a merciless tree, Mirari felt a sudden fall
Aiming to shatter her to pieces like a broken porcelain doll
It would have ended badly then, if not for the stunning speed of Lore!
And in the arms that broke the fall, a friendship there was forged

'Please let us pass, we mean no harm,' the Princess then beseeched
But the trees grew dark with ill intent, vines and thorns outreached
The Prince was trapped in the tangled grasp of a jungle seeking prey
Even after Ian cut him free, they knew it would mean death to stay

Another body bleeding fresh confirmed a forest on attack
And the escaping heroes scarcely stopped to grab its pack
All managed to escape and dodge (and Lore did it in style)
But persistent in their memories -- corruption, something vile.

Our friends were brought to safety as the way ahead made clear
And the contents of the purloined pack made up for all that fear
A bright sun and a cloudless sky soon soothed away the fall
And began to beg the question, did it happen at all?

Far away in the Saffron Chain there are places maps can't find
Where six brave explorers were temporarily entwined
With a darkness and a strangeness that only goes to show
That if you step beneath the trees, no telling what you'll come to know.

Relationship Note on Lore

Lore took what could have been a terrible evening of being denied something shiny and made it an exceptional evening by gifting me with a wealth of things priceless beyond compare. Leave it to her to sweep into town after being gone so long and make the best and most dramatic entrance. If I wasn't so entirely thrilled to see her once more, I'd be green with envy.

Relationship Note on Lore

Her sister's husband. I'm her sister. I know what happens. In my husband's case, they send them on trips to cities like Pyre on 'diplomatic' missions, all because he did not agree with slavery or the blood sports and said as much. Yet, in spite of this treachery, my husband insists there is still beauty in Eurus and wishes to return for a visit. He longs to look upon the dunes of sand again, and show his children there can be good there. I don't agree, not from everything I've learned about the place. My husband is a good man, with heady ideals and a healthy dose optimism that I do not tend to share. I'm an Explorer. I'm well aware of the horrors the world has to offer; being an Explorer confirms that. It's also how I met my husband, out on such an expedition.

Oh my apologies! I did not realize that the entry we were discussing referred to thirteen kingdoms of Eurus. I thought the author was speaking of Eurus as one of thirteen other kingdoms.

I'll read with more precision before commenting I'm sure. Thank you for pointing out the error.

Relationship Note on Lore

There must be something pleasant about the kingdoms of Eurus, for all the people I've met from there have been utterly delightful! While I have heard strange tales, there is surely something redeeming about the place for it brought my sister her wonderful husband and I know there are others that have come to Arx from there who are generous and kind people. So, while on the surface it may seem a strange place to those of us who were not born there, I think there must be hidden depths to it that are fantastic and inspiring to produce such lovely people.

Relationship Note on Lore

See the sailing of the adventurer,
I think she's chuffed at the venturer.

Uncle finds it hard to see the artist,
Overshadowed by the gregarious chartist.

Who is that knowing near the Eurus?
I think she ought to discuss this.

Her vessel of choice is merchant ship,
She ran away - gone - poof on an ocean trip.

She returns to Arx and the Lyceum,
We brace ourselves for whatever may come.
