If there is a sock thief on the loose at Grayson Manor, there's really only one person qualified enough to solve the case.

Relationship Note on Laric

Happy birthday to my dearest friend, colleague, and superior to whom I report, Prince Laric Grayson, Master of Questions.

For your birthday this year, I suspect you will receive a great many questions about other people's business, some paperwork you really don't actually want to fill out, a fragment of a truly harrowing mystery you wish you could forget, and at least one caller who is only visiting you so that they can scritch Sally's head.

I sincerely hope that you manage to find at least an hour for yourself somewhere in there. After all, you're getting close to 40, and you'll only get to be Laric for _one_ lifetime.

The Grandmaster Preston does not and has never claimed to speak for the Gods. Nevertheless, he is a beacon of righteousness whose actions and words only a fool would fail to heed.

Relationship Note on Laric

As always I find the Master of Questions to be reasoned, well thought out and eloquent. He is quite correct - the forces of the Crown represent the Crown with all its rights and privileges, and the forces of the Faith represent the Gods. We should not confuse the two in ignorance, nor in malice set them to conflict.

Relationship Note on Laric

No one ever really understands. I did not expect him to understand, but he does! It is a tremendous discovery, like if you spent your life chasing a pink duck - not because it was a magic duck, or proof of your rightful rule of the Kingdom of Duck, or anything like that, but like if it was just a duck that was pink and that was /fascinating/, but whenever you tried to explain to people why the duck was fascinating, you'd just get a lot of weird looks, and a suggestion that you'd be better off looking for fire-breathing horses instead, because at least fire-breathing horses are useful.

But Prince Laric understands the inherent fascinating qualities of pink ducks!

It's really pretty amazing.

Relationship Note on Laric

All the talk here about siblings has made me wish I had some. Of course, there's Laric, who is near as a brother to me, since we were close growing up and he was also more or less raised by my father. Somehow the mischief we got up to in our younger days turned into more more death-defying adventures since then. But we're both still alive, and I'm grateful for that.

Relationship Note on Laric

"As Arx endures, we will remember."

That is the solemn promise that each Knight of Solace makes. To remember the sacrifice that Silver made for us. She and her Guard fought day and night, knowing what it would cost them, so that the refugees, the children, the injured, and the noncombatants might live. It is even written that almost all of the Compact can trace its lineage to those that Silver saved.

I at first wrote to take umbrage at the Master of Questions' statement about forgetting. But the truth is the legacy of Silver had faded.

Together, the King's Own and Knights of Solace are rectifying that. Through sharing her sacrifice. Through research. Through embodying her belief. that every soul is unique and possessed of intristic worth.

We will remember.

Relationship Note on Laric

I'm told it's sort of the done thing to write about your impressions of specific people in the white journals, here in Arx. For the last decade, or almost, I haven't really stayed in one place long enough form specific impressions about people, outside of "haggles well" or "is a pompous jerk, but pays her bills on time", and those aren't really things you write in journals to leave behind.

But I guess I'm writing an impression of Prince Laric Grayson, Master of Questions, because he stands out, although I've only ever really spoken to him in person once. He's not overly familiar, he doesn't offer handouts for no reason, and he seems aware of his power and why someone might be a bit wary of it without finding offense in that or trying to dismiss it. I don't know if he's a good Master of Questions. I'm not qualified to judge. I don't even really know what he does! But if I had to describe a good noble, someone who I felt comfortable with the power of life and death over me, or people I care about, I think it might look a lot like him.

His lizard is also really interesting. Not a euphemism!

Relationship Note on Laric

Ah, balance.

I have-- hm. I am not a man wholly comfortable with the ideal of living by ideals. I mean this in the gentlest way I can. I love the gods and worship them, but I know I am unequal to endless growth and aspiration. I am a painter who often explores darkness as a subject, and not in a way that is wholly meant to be instructive.

I am an imperfect person, in the sum, who sees some worth in my imperfections and struggles.

This is, perhaps, my own balance. My own equilibrium. My own internal pendulum.

I am familiar with the work of Archlector Py in this area, and I have interpreted it as the maxim, you must act. I believe this. Sometimes the desire for equilibrium or balance can lead us to paralysis, to be afraid of change, certainly. But I am also wary of classifying actions as Light or Dark, when much of what we do as humans is necessarily muddied. In the middle. Or unreadable.

I respect the gray represented by the complexity of acting over a lifetime. I respect duality. The pendulum swings the world. And the pendulum swings in us, restless. We will never be perfect, you and I. But we must act.

This is a note mostly for the benefit of those who might seek to follow the illustrious Master of Questions advice as given recently in his journal:

Delegation? Yes. Excellent advice.

However, do not remove sleep from your regular routine, or even carve out 'two or three hours' from it on a regular basis. Your people deserve your best decision making skills, not you when you're so exhausted the words start to blur and 'Chaaaaaaarge' sounds like the best battle plan.

Sleep. Eat. Make regular attempts at enjoyment.
