Relationship Note on Cassius

I'm still mad that you're gone. I catch myself writing funny missives, and then I remember they'll never be delivered.

Relationship Note on Cassius

Three years and five months, I've had this blade, this lovely dagger you gave me with the expectation that I would learn how to use it. Three years and five months, I have kept this blade without once bothering with lessons despite the numerous times I carried it with me as we ventured off somewhere awful.

Today, I made some honest effort to learn how to hold it, how to swing and stab and not be utterly useless should I ever have cause to draw the thing. I still mean to never find reason, but I do feel some odd sort of ease at finally making good. I think you would have been pleased, to some small degree, with both myself and my instructor, though he tells me I ought to find another if I mean to be at all proficient with its use.

Still, it's a start. Long overdue.

Relationship Note on Cassius

Three years ago, Cassius addressed me in his whites by saying, "I would write 'thank you', but doing one's duty should be expected, not thanked."

All of you writing about my cousin-in-law, all of you sharing sentiments about how short life is and how tragic his loss is, I do hope you are well-aware of how empty the mourned man would find all that. If you wish to honor Duke Cassius Pravus, go out there and serve. Do what needs to be done. Give your time to Gild and the Gods. That's how he ought to be remembered.

Relationship Note on Cassius

Death has Cassius now, and I know that She will remember his service to her, and his aid to me.

I never thought I would fight any war at anyone's side, but he was a true knight and a true commander.

Can't say we were intimates. But he defended the world. A good man I trusted with my life.

If the skeletons could drink we would be raising a glass.

Relationship Note on Cassius

I sit and write this with so many confusing emotions drifting through my mind. Cassius... gone. I am not surprised by the manner in which death has taken him, though I wish it did not need to be that way, and of course, wish it did not need to be so soon. I mourn the man I knew so very well once upon a time. I truly do not know that my life would be the same had he not been in it as he was. We lost touch in more recent times... barely spoke. But I mourn the man I knew and offer those others close to him my condolences.

I will forever remember that time in the shop years ago when we first truly spoke, and I first made him smile. That image will be the one carried always in my heart.

Relationship Note on Cassius

I had been so looking forward to reconnecting with Cassius now that I have been more involved in House Pravus.

Now that cannot come to pass.

I mourn with Velenosa, with Pravus, with all the Lyceum as well as all who knew and loved Cassius. The Knights of Solace, House Nightgold, so many of us were touched by his dedication, his conviction.

I mourn most of all with Belladonna, the cousin I love like a sister. I remember the joy in her eyes when I helped her dress for her wedding that day. I do not know anything of the contract between the Houses...but I do know that the bride to be, eyes shining that day and cheeks flushed with happiness, had made a love match.

May we all be so lucky to be loved that much at some point in our lives.

Go gently, good Duke. Non Omnus Moriar

Relationship Note on Cassius

He was family. As Nightgold and Velenosa, he was my cousin. He was honourable, stubborn, and had a straightforwardness that I could appreciate. In that spirit, I will be succinct.

Whoever and whatever has killed him, I will enjoy their deaths.

A wise man if you confront your flaws and no longer deny them.

A fool if you paid for it.

An even bigger one if you think some random commoner will know the worst about you.

Relationship Note on Cassius

I was surprised to receive a commission from Duke Cassius Pravus, once Lord Cassius Nightgold. I expressed to someone who knows slightly more of him than I do that I didn't have the impression that Duke Cassius had a sense of humor about himself, to which I was informed that Duke Cassius doesn't have a sense of humor at all.

So I took to his journals. And I found that Duke Cassius is, in fact, one of the worst things a person can be.

Dull.

Faithful, self-righteously dull, even, which is much worse. "Stalwart" is one of the most damningly boring words you can see used to describe a person. Duke Cassius belongs in the Oathlands, but he is a Northerner by birth without their sense of freedom and boisterousness, and a Lycene by marriage without their flair for wit or intrigue. It is little wonder Stonedeep traded him away, and I can only imagine he brought much of Nightgold's gold with him to offer any sort of temptation to Pravus to take him. One assumes that he was relegated to Setarco for so long in hopes that he'd learn how to be interesting and to give his wife space to find actual entertainment in Arx.

Perhaps the Pravuses have simply estimated that they can save money on poison by bringing Duke Cassius to dinners with their enemies and letting him converse about the Gods until they go ahead and poison _themselves_.

Please direct all complaints about this entry to its commissioner, Duke Cassius Pravus.

Relationship Note on Cassius

We should talk about the opportunities of different upbringings sometime, Duke Cassius. I may not be able to stitch a fine tapestry, or dance while leaping about like a deer, but I do think that we commoners have many opportunities as well. We need only look for them and be attentive to them when they arrive. That, I think, is the difference; they are not thrust in our laps as they are the nobles'. But opportunities are still there, many and varied.

What opportunities do you imagine to be uniquely aristocratic?

Breaking news: The Duke Consort of Setarco cowers before Malvici threats of violence! Local drunk interviewed, foretells war, tides of angry rabbits, and the moon's fall from the sky. In other news, Cullers said to have mastered the process of transforming lead to gold, and are offering the secret for sizeable amounts of silver!
