Relationship Note on Cara

I apologize to anybody who's delicate sense of propriety might have been harmed during the insults that were thrown at my niece, Princess Cara. You see, I am currently in convalescence following a bit of an explosion and I wrote to her telling her that seeing her get torn apart was really the only thing that could make these pathetic old bones feel better. I don't want to make any false connections but having read them, I'm told to expect a full recovery.

Relationship Note on Cara

Read again, your highness. I said "deaths or disappearances."

I do take pride in my work, after all.

Relationship Note on Cara

Princess Cara has been close to the following deaths or disappearances in, as far as I can tell, chronological order:

Lord Zaccheri Rubino, her first brother
Lord Addison Ashford, her first husband, traitor to the Crown
Baron Eos Saik, her friend
Duke Giovanni Rubino, her father (that her second brother apparently murdered)
Marquis Vincere Igniseri, her betrothed
Lord Pietro Igniseri, her friend and betrothed's brother
Princess Dawn Grayson, her friend and first appointer to Voice of Grayson
Duchess Sylvie Zaffria, her once sister-in-law
Duke Valkieri Rubino, her murderous second brother
Lord Killian Ashford, her friend and once brother-in-law
Lady Aislin Ashford, her friend and once cousin-in-law

One must imagine, after making a close inspection of the journals written by and about her, that they were all in a rush to escape from the incredibly large weight of the princess's ego. It's rare to find someone who clearly admires their own cleverness quite so insufferably as she clearly does. Either that or her particularly large streak of vengeful spitefulness. Perhaps they all wronged her and just didn't want to deal with hearing her complain about it. Gods know I wouldn't care to. Hopefully her latest husband manages a painless death for himself.

She even had the poor form to grovel to the Faith to take her back.

Please direct all complaints about this entry to its commissioner, Princess Cara Grayson née Rubino by way of Ashford.

Relationship Note on Cara

Forgive me. My arithmetic skills are not what they once were.

Only the latter if you please. Unless of course, you find that their opinions prove generally useful. In my experience that is so rarely ever the case. ...current events excluded, I'm sure.

Well, will you look at that! I lost track of you after your fourth or fifth marriage, dear. A Grayson, now? Good on you.

I have heard it said that, in life, the reward for a job well done is another, harder job.

Relationship Note on Cara

In an earlier white reflection, Duke Harlan lamented how walking through the throngs of beautiful, unmarried women in this city was like walking through a field of flowers. He must not pluck just the most beautiful and aromatic flowers, he must pluck the flower that's useful to him.

In defense of his own words, he continued to point out that we women folk were not just beautiful and fragrant, but we also could be useful for our practical skills.

I had hoped that the duke's words would be properly remembered, when he did find his "flower". Now we see him lamenting over marriage again, and the difficulties in selecting an arrangement. I'm merely making sure the duke's words are remembered.

Perhaps you ought to write Duke Harlan to aid him through his difficulties?

Relationship Note on Cara

If her words are based in the personal, it is a personal experience shared by many, whatsoever their gender. Be the blows physical of otherwise.

It is a reminder many need to hear, one that many may need to hear again in the generations to come.

If her words are symbolic, they carry a different and equally important weight.

It is curious that you are so specific about the genders involved here. My observation is that this is a personal experience you are relating on some degree of subtly.

Thank you Princess for warning us of this new condition afflicting mainlanders. I will remember to take it into account if I happen to interact with those I have seen showing symptoms.

Relationship Note on Cara

Cara Grayson is a lady of both grace and sensibility, and I am over the moon to be joining her family.

She has reasonable plans for the rearing of her children, and I look forward to seeing how Tiber grows alongside them in the bonds of good fellowship, as the ward of their family.

She delighted me by reaching out to me as a one-day future cousin, and I am so happy to call her friend, and look forward to seeing her darling daughters grow.

Seriously, so cute.

Relationship Note on Cara

I make few entries in this journal, but feel obligated to set the record straight after being informed of my wife's treachery.

It was not half a bottle of wine. I distinctly remember finding two empty bottles the next morning. The hats were wholly incidental and all I am guilty of is scratching the dog's stomach. And behind his ears, of course. He loves being scratched behind the ears. He was a good boy that day and deserved as much. I will not apologize for my conduct.

Relationship Note on Cara

A cousin of ours by marriage and perhaps in other esoteric ways (I am very bad at family trees). After hearing many speak of her and her new status, I got to see her again for the first time again at a ball the Graysons were holding. She was very pregnant but also very kind to me, even keeping her dog from troubling me. She helped introduce me to several people at the ball, a kindess for which I was quite grafetul.

Relationship Note on Cara

I so miss my dear sister. Though the distance between Ashford House and Grayson Mansion is slight, it still seems as though it is a gulf that now exists between us. It is the change when one marries and moves on to a new home, and new responsibility..and I miss her even as I rejoice for her. Still, once my niece or nephew arrives, I hope that things shall settle somewhat and we can find mischief to be about together once more.

Relationship Note on Cara

A heavily-pregnant young princess-by-marriage, widowed by the slaughter of the King's retinue. I might well be biased in favour of her Lycene origins, but she seems to be conscientious, intelligent, and thoughtful. We met at a gathering within the (attractively green-painted) Great Gray Hall of the Graysons, arranged to provide a forum for those of us without a shred of martial capacity to assemble while our defenders struggled to hold the line of Arx's walls and seaward defences. She was a gracious example of visible calm, while also being eager to learn something that would be of use to our warriors in the aftermath of the battle: we wound up discussing the basics of medical care, in some detail.

Relationship Note on Cara

...as dictated to a priest of Vellichor...

The little mother is strong. She is fierce as any falcon and will hatch a fierce chick. When Bringers come she fights without armour or weapons. She makes armour, she makes weapons, with what is around her. She is one who would do well in the wilds but it is good she is here. I look to her for how to be here.

Relationship Note on Cara

So my dear sister-in-law is no longer officially that, and is now a Princess of Grayson. Well, she was always a Princess, but I already miss her being in the house and so near at hand..even though it's a mere few minutes walk to the Grayson Mansion. I hope that Duke Valkieri will not take it personally that I have, so far as I'm concerned, adopted his sister as my own. Though she may be part of another family now, she will forever be a part of my heart and life, and I hope that she knows that wherever she goes she shall forever have the love and support of her Ashford family.

As an aside, I hope that Addison is enjoying the maggots, it's what he deserves for the harm he did to her.

Relationship Note on Cara

She came to Ashford through marriage to a cousin that I frankly despised, and yet became as close to me as a sister. One of the sharpest minds I know, a skilled researcher, an excellent diplomat, and an able administrator. She's been a Voice of Grayson -- and no doubt will be again -- as well as one of the head diplomats of the Crown, a Scholar, and so many other roles.

The Graysons could not ask for a better princess than Cara, and the Crownlands as a whole benefit by this match.

So I can't be unhappy, even if the solarium of Ashford House will seem a little emptier now.
