Relationship Note on Amund

News of your heroic bravery to the death against our insidious enemy, Helena Thornweave, has reached the ears of the people of Tor and I can assure you, Sir Amund, that your heroism will not be forgotten. You were one of many who put your life at risk to save us, but there was only one of you; a staunch and fierce warrior who wielded a blade like no other. Legendary in fact. I am grateful you offered training to our men and women in Tor and I know you spend time offering training to those in Arx while you were living in the capital. That you were struck through the throat with a thorn, the irony is not lost on me.

We thank you, we honor you, you will be missed.

Relationship Note on Amund

It was with a sadness in my heart that I learned of Sir Amund Monrosa's death. We had struck up a friendship of sorts, though perhaps it was more a mentor/pupil relationship. I'm sure he despaired of my lack of skill with a blade, but his patience was admirable. It's fitting that he died a hero's death, I don't think he'd have wanted it any other way. I'll visit each of the shrines this coming week and offer prayers to the gods in the hopes that we won't have to wait too long for the return of his soul.

Goodbye, Sir Amund, and thank you.

Attractive and more than competent with a sword. Quite broody though it's hard to know how far I should trust this one but I enjoy his company.

Relationship Note on Amund

Though the idea is amusing even to me of a line of pugilists standing shoulder to shoulder in battle, it's rather not to my point.

Refusing those who would lend their very bodies because they don't wield a blade is rather an insult, and to the detriment of us all.

And, sadly, an insult and dismissal that I've come to expect.

If this is in reference to me in any way, I was not making a promise. I was certainly not making a promise that Brass would deliver; I don't speak for him. Aside from a few moments of temper I've never even spoken /to/ him. I was giving my solemn word that he is entirely capable of what he says he can do, because there were those that were doubting that he could.

People can either believe me or not. But you see his work on the streets every night.

Relationship Note on Amund

I say survival is not a virtue, you say it is a necessity. And you are right, but not in the way I meant survival. I was talking of survival of self, and it is not. Your survival, my survival, these things are not important. The survival of our people and their culture and values? That I will accept is a necessity. But they must both be preserved - for without our culture, our values, our Gods, our ways....we are not us. That death of our society will be slower perhaps if our people survive but everything else is shed away, as those who remember what we were pass on, as each successively smaller revolt by those who realise the path we were on is too dark fails.

I have little desire to die, even fighting, but I have absolutely no desire in fighting to live without purpose.

War is shit. You wanna talk Abandoned killing each, I remember all those proxy wars the Lycene just loved throw together years back. They're experts at it. Killing is killing. Don't matter who's doing it, humans find a lot of fun ways to make each other bleed.

I remember being waste deep in the dead. I also remember making a lot of fucking money too. The more people were injured the, the more I got paid. Spilled blood means good coin to me.

War is shit. But it pays damn well. People talk about peace, but who's buying? Sure, it's nice, but it doesn't pay the rent.

Relationship Note on Amund

Let me make something clear. If it had been my choice, I would never have come here. I would have stayed with my tribe for the rest of my life if I was able. I was happy where I was. The only reason I'm here now is because my tribe /sent/ me. And they didn't send me because of the Compact's stellar reputation. I grew up with stories of the Compact doing everything you've described to the tribes they caught and more.

Do you think I don't know about aggressive tribes? Who do you think the Abandoned raiders prey on when they can't get at you? I learned to hunt to feed my tribe, I learned to fight to protect them. Do you think I don't know about Abandoned cultists, or tribes that bow to the Abyss? I've killed more of them since coming here than I can count, and my score didn't start at zero. But there are more tribes than that. More peoples than that. All we wanted was to live our lives by our own ways and for the soldiers to leave us alone. But they didn't, did they? They took coin to kill all of us, not because we attacked them, or raided, or murdered, or even because we had land their employer wanted, but because we were /inconvenient/.

Don't lecture me on the value of life. I know exactly how much life is worth here. I know how much my life was worth, I know how much my people's lives were worth. I've seen the figures written down, worked out, haggled over. You said it yourself: the only good shav is a dead shav in the Compact. And dead shavs are measured in silver.

Wait. Wait wait wait wait wait. I'm sorry, I missed something. You chose to be a -sellsword- because you want to -help- people? Brother, that's not what we -do-! That's what the Knights of Solace are for! Or the various protective holy orders are for! Sellswords kill people because we like money and we like killing people without being criminals! You've got it all wrong! I think we need to start from the beginning. A virtuous sellsword is like saying someone's a bloodless butcher! It just doesn't happen unless you're really bad at your job. Really, that explains so very much.

I do believe the title you're looking for isn't Prodigal. It's Vice-Captain of the Valorous Few, or Sword of De Lire. Someone who has done a lot more to protect the compact than you ever have. You aren't being impressive when you talk about the things you've seen. I've seen them too, my friend. I've done quite a lot worse. Everyone has seen horror. Everyone is capable of atrocity.

You speak as though every member of the Compact values life as something sacred. I have been hired to butcher whole villages of the Abandoned. To go through and put every one of them to the sword, to have my folks fan out and burn every last little shack. To take spears and stick them into the eyes of every corpse, just to make sure.

Get off your fucking high horse, sellsword, until you join up with someone with some actual principles and declare yourself. Otherwise, I'll come yank you off it and drag you through the blood-soaked mud. When murder for money is your business, you don't get to judge.

Relationship Note on Amund

My tribe never attacked Compact holdings, villages, or caravans. That didn't stop someone from sending people like you to kill us down to every last man, woman, and child. The first experience I ever personally had with people from the Compact was when /they/ came to kill /me/, and the first lesson I learned from that is that the Compact measures lives in coin. And not a particularly large amount of coin either.

Don't talk to me about rabid animals when you and your kind can't even be bothered to tell the difference between actual threats and literal babies.

Relationship Note on Amund

It is amazing how terribly wrong you are and as someone who was attacked by an enemy of the Compact and left mutilated for it I wouldn't do a damn thing different if it meant I could save the same lives, help the same people. Besides, I'm told the eye-patch is a "good look" for me.

That is the truth of Medicine, my friend. It belongs to everyone. It heals the world. Not just our narrow view of the world.

It heals the heart, the soul as much as bones and flesh, as much as it heals disease.

Even a rabid animal--sure you see the irony here yeah?--deserves care.

My sympathies, though, that no one ever taught you that old 'violence begets violence' adage.

It sounds like you don't really like your work, either. Maybe you should take up cooking (you still get to stab things!) or woodworking.

You could make a few more bed frames for the clinic's new addition!

I kill. I pillage. I raid, and I burn. I do these things because I'm paid by people of the Compact to do them. Would you care to try to kill me? You're more than welcome to make the attempt! It's always so fun when people try. I hear you call yourself a sellsword, too! You should read my book, really. One of the prime rules of sellswording is a lack of judgment. I take anyone that wants a new life, make them rich, and put them to use! Although, I probably wouldn't take you. An exception proves the rule. After all, I'd have to go through all the trouble of training you, and then you'd decide all Abandoned need to die and my Prodigal second-in-command would kill you out of hand.

For a man of 'so few words', you certainly are outspoken about your opinions!

But I suppose its easy enough to be so -to the point- when your only sell-able trait is the murder of your fellow human.

Anyway, I'm commandeering your prejudice to draw attention to something that doesn't involve slaughter or poking things or whatever you serious-murderer types get along about:

The condition of the Commons Clinic is commendable but I think we can do better. If anyone is interested in adding another wing to the Clinic or additional floors. Or _anything_ at all to do with bringing good medicine to the people of the Lowers (locals, prodigals, or sad and violent sellswords) please send a missive my way.

I'm in the market for charity lately.

Does the Compact deserve to be put down like dogs when its members raid, pillage, and kill? Many, many people make entire careers out of it.

No one has been defending bandits, pirates, cultists, or raiders that I've seen here.
