Relationship Note on Mirk

My tutor Dame Judyth was fond of a quote by the Eurusi scholar Faiyed Niedja, which can be translated as, "One who fights with monsters must be ever wary of becoming one. For if you gaze long into the abyss, the abyss also gazes into you."

And yet so too must it be with beauty.

Thank you, Elder, for the task you set to me. It has reminded me of all the splendor, power and majesty of Nature and her elements. Such knowledge is a potent ally against despair and misery.

I am very grateful to Marquessa Reigna, Sister Sophie, Rukhnis, Lady Thea and all of the physicians and apothecaries for their tireless efforts in combating the illness responsible for the quarantine. The story of the survivors of that wreck has remained tragic to the last chapter, but it doesn't diminish the labor and sacrifice of Arvum's greatest healers.

I visited the Seliki Gardens to celebrate the wedding of Count Orrin and Countess Scythia. Amid all the good conversation and company, I had a wonderful time, and truly enjoyed the opportunity to dance with Countess Mikani and Rukhnis. I also had the privilege of witnessing the graceful steps of my first dance partner in Arx, Princess Reese Grayson, as she danced with two of her friends. The best moves of the night were undoubtedly those of Lord Kaldur and Princess Marisol, whose dance could be described as the most harmonious and fortunate combination of alcohol, merriment, and music.

I visited the Saving Grace Hospital recently, where Rukhnis, Marquessa Reigna, Sister Sophie, and Lady Thea have been searching for ways to treat the illness that has been affecting the people who came aboard the flaming ship that crashed into the docks in the Lowers. The physicians are extremely dedicated. Sister Sophie, the Mother of Mercies, has herself become infected as she treated the sick, and I witnessed Marquessa Reigna literally fall asleep at her desk in complete exhaustion from her long and ceaseless labors.

Rukhnis, in addition to her skillful treatment of the sick, acted as a translator between me and a woman named Nadja al-Fentir who arrived on the burning ship. Together, Rukhnis and I were able to discover that ship had been transporting enslaved people to Skal'daja, also called "The City of Chains." Nadja told us that the captain of the vessel was the first to show symptoms of the disease, and a number of other interesting facts which I hope to investigate as soon as possible.

I must also note the great medical skill and care of Sister Estelle, as well as the unorthodox but effective methods of Jacali. The talents and bravery of these physicians and healers are a great aegis against the destructive force of plagues, and the last, greatest hope of those who are suffering. I encourage anyone who is willing to offer prayers to Lagoma for insight into treatments for this disease, and a swift recovery for the afflicted.

The depth of your knowledge is profound, and may this entry remind the scholars of Vellichor of your generosity and wisdom long after the spirits have guided your soul to Elysia.

Let us share more of our prodigal graces at Queensrest Inn again sometime soon.

Countess Mikani and I traveled to the docks in the Lowers the other day in search of Rukhnis. While we were there, a large ship that had taken fire was rapidly approaching the dock. Instantly, the Countess raced forward, and dove into the frigid water. She climbed aboard the ship and managed to drastically slow its advance and reduce its impact into the dock, upon which were still many people of the Lowers, despite the best efforts of Lady Acantha, Juniper, Sir Calaudrin and others to get those nearby to safety.

Sir Merek and Lord Ahmer also got aboard the ship, and managed to help the crew and passengers get to deck. Amid the flames and wreckage, Lord Ian did not hesitate to dive into the water, and helped many to reach safety on the docks. Lady Thea and Dame Irisa Wainryte helped to carry those who had been wounded to a makeshift triage set up by Rukhnis Al-Katibi, and many lives were saved due to her skill and diligence.

We managed to see the crew and passengers of the ship to safety, but it was clear that they were unwell, and it has since been revealed that they have some kind of previously unknown illness. The infected have been taken to the Saving Grace Hospital, and are under the care of Marquessa Reigna Keaton, and it is said that any with medical knowledge who might wish to help should send a message to the Marquessa.

I recently visited the Ivy Covered Watchtower by Seawatch Gate for a gathering of people who loved books. It was hosted by Princess Reese Grayson, who handed out copies of books on a great variety of subjects. Reading them has made me laugh or think or suffer; they're interesting, and they are another way the Crownlands General in these times of darkness yet remains a light.

It is one of the great honors of my life to write and play for Lady Azolla Nightgold. It's moving every time I hear her sing.

Princess Alarissa and I hosted a banquet in the Black Hall in honor of the Sentinel. It is easy to see why the Princess Consort of Maelstrom is so beloved and respected, as she is a woman with far reaching vision, great skill in statecraft, and a sincere love of her people.

Many subjects were discussed, and I am very grateful for all those who were present. In reflecting on all that was said, I believe the revelations of Count Orrin, taken with the words of Commander Sparte Grayfellow, revealed a path to justice for Asger, and for many who are suffering even now in the Isles, the Crownlands and the Northlands.

I must offer my sincere apologies for disturbing the repose of Countess Carita and Lord Evander in order to arm wrestle with Lady Brianna after the serious business had concluded. I hope, in the end, such Northland celebratory traditions and contests were more amusing than offensive. I must also congratulate the Countess of Cedar Vale, who has proven herself one of Arvum's strongest, and earned the title Empress of Arm Wrestling.

The banquet was my first time speaking with Duke Valdemar Grimhall, and though perhaps some of our values differ, he is without a doubt a man of integrity and courage, and his decisions will do much to shape the future of his people and the Compact. At the risk of writing in a fashion that is too familiar, I must say that I stood in awe of Count Orrin and Lady Peri. I have long known and respected the intellect and leadership of Lady Peri, and to see her in the presence of her father - the way they think and act, the alacrity with which they offer aid in time of need, and the insight they provide into matters of greatest consequence - I can see all too clearly the cause of the prosperity of Pearlspire, and the glorious reputation of House Seliki.

We have concluded our investigation into Asger's death, and found much of value, though it seems to have lead to a dead end; however, I no longer have any doubt that Asger's murder was part of a large and ingenious design. Grimkin, the Cracknecks, Longwoods, Warwynds - perhaps even Marquis Ford - they are all connected in an attempt to divide us, to distract - yet my eyes are open, and my search continues with a restless will.

I remain eager to speak to High Lord Victus, and I offer my sincere thanks to those who helped us to investigate in the Northlands, especially my cousin, Duchess Fianna, Lady Amari Keaton, Lord Cadern Ravenseye, Rukhnis and even Gilroy Greyhope, whose insolence, under very specific circumstances, is quite useful.

To any who may be involved: look around. Your co-conspirators have been sent in agony to the Shinning Lands to await punishment for their sins and betrayals. There is still time for you to decide whether you will be a tool to be disposed of, or whether you will to do right in the eyes of the Sentinel. Send word before it's too late, for if I track you down, even Mercy will whet the blade of Justice.

The result of the duel had nothing to do with your age, but rather the judgment of the gods upon the one for whom you fought, nor does it diminish the glory you've earned with your courage and skill. Thank you for taking the field on my behalf, Lady Brianna.

No one mentioned debate and testimony in any court save that of public opinion, as a means of finding the causes of unhappy effects.

I hope you will forgive me for dismissing the advice of a self-professed tyrant, who advocates for violence over truth.

I spoke to my cousin recently about a number of important matters. Our family is not known for its displays of affection, and I had always considered myself something of a burden, to my parents and perhaps to the Duchess as well. Hearing her words was moving, and later, when I returned to Stormwall, shortly after being named Voice, my father smiled at me for the first time that I can remember. Though I thought I wouldn't care, it felt good to be acknowledged as something other than a disappointment. I will repay the faith the Duchess has put in me a thousand fold.

When I returned to Arx, I found out that Duke Harlan challenged me to a duel. Though I can understand why he did it, I must admit it made me miserable in a way I have seldom felt. Though I cannot claim to know the Duke well at all, the Ashford family has treated me with kindness and acceptance. I have fought beside Lady Rhiannon and Lord Quintin, and I have a great deal of respect for the skill and wit of Lord Pharamond. The Duchess Lisebet had always treated me kindly as well. It is even more painful because my relationship with Lady Olivia is not founded on mere attraction or idle promises. It had been a deep friendship, founded on trust, admiration and sincere affection. We have saved each other's lives, stood together against agents of the Abyss, and shared many happy memories. It is agonizing to see that trust fraying and our bond ripped away.

Things proceed as they must. My sincere gratitude to those who have shown me friendship in my time of need. Your kindness will not be forgotten.

For the first night in a long time I slept soundly. It may have had something to do with Stonedeep whiskey I had been drinking, but more likely it had to do with a feeling of safety. Marquessa Lianne Malespero agreed to meet with me in her library. The library is a wonder, but not in comparison to the mind of the Marquessa.

Once while on the docks, resupplying at Pearlspire on my way to Coastside, I watched a sailor work through the most complex and tangled knot I had ever seen. The sailor's fingers were dexterous, and his eyes focused. He worked each fiber of the rope, loosening it little by little. Of course, I quickly lost interest and left to get some ale and read a book. When I returned two hours later, the sailor was removing the last twists from that ancient, briny cord. I should guess that trusty rope is still in use to this day. In my imagination, the mind of Marquessa Lianne works in a similar fashion, probing deep mysteries, and to know such a genius is at work on the tangles of what there is to know, I found myself enjoying a good deal of much needed rest, and awaking with a powerful desire to speak to her again as soon as possible.

The Elder of the Spirit Walkers has entrusted me with a difficult task, yet he has not set me to it blindly. He has handed me a torch of wisdom to guide me and my muse. For a Northern Bard, it is a high honor and sacred duty, and I will do all that I can to fulfill it to the utmost.

I visited the Vellichorian Academy recently to tell a tall tale of my ancestor, and was reminded that rum and storytelling are very well suited to a winter's evening. Lady Peri and Duchess Delilah spoke on the subject of Prince Cerdic and the Nightstar, one that, while not less fantastic than my own story, likely contains far more truth. The Nightstar itself seemed an amazing vessel, and, while hearing it described, I think I witnessed Lady Mikani fall in love.

Relationship Note on Mikani

Ode to Freedom

There now upon the shores of Reedreef blows
A breeze of change, and shift in tides below.
The shackles that had bound the children young
Now broken, and from wrists and ankles flung,

Designed by she who knew their deepest pain,
And rose, though scarred, with heart that none could tame -
Whose sail and prow the wind and surf do ride,
Whose name is sung by Skald with teary pride -

Yet fierce her will amid the storms and squalls
To see freedom for those held fast as thralls,
Who so long were bent with fear and longing
Now rise with hope from bold Mikani.

I had a great time at the Winter's Escapade party hosted by Princess Marisol and Lord Erik. We arrived just in time for the drinking contest which was a blessing and a curse. Though I did not win, I think I drank enough not to bring shame upon the Northlands. I also had the privilege of writing for, and playing my lyre to accompany the voice of Lady Azolla Nightgold. Her voice is beautiful in its range, but it has a haunting, soulful quality that can touch one's heart, like the memory of a departed friend, or the the smell of something that reminds one of home.

Afterwards I found myself in the stone pools at the Golden Hart. I don't know if there's anything so relaxing as good conversation amid a light snowfall, while soaking in warm, clean water. It was just what I needed. My thanks to the Princess and the Lady Adventurer for their company.
