Relationship Note on Rymarr

I will miss the Lord Commander, as I missed my right-hand man when he was my First Captain. He goes off to follow other paths though, and those lead him away from the King's Own. He has served with honor and distinction, and while I will miss serving with him, I know this is better for him and also for the King. Yesterday he saved the King. Today he makes his way out of Crownguard tower for the last time. Even as I turn my attention to the leadership of the King's Own, I wish him well.

The Lord Commander's sword has come back to me. When I voluntarily handed it to Rymarr, it was for any number of reasons, but chief among them was that I was not the Lord Commander that His Majesty needed. The people needed a strong man of the Oathlands, and I had other concerns that may have endangered His Majesty were I still the Lord Commander. And so the sword passed, not only peacefully but - more rarely - without the death of the one who carried it.

And now I am once more the Lord Commander. This time, at Rymarr's determination. There was a vision, and there was an attempt that encroached upon the security of His Majesty, and now there is a new Lord Commander. It was a peaceful transition, but a difficult one. Watching Rymarr, who has stood at my side through so much for the last two years, step away from the King's Own is difficult. He does so with honor, but his path is moving away from the King's Own and what we stand for, and so I am feeling the loss of a strong right hand.

But that is the job I have sworn to undertake, and so I will. I wish Rymarr the best, but I also wish he were staying on in the King's Own. We need all the swords we can get, and our ranks are so green right now I look out over them and see a field of grass. Oh they're good, make no mistake, but they make me wonder - was I ever so young? The answer is, of course, yes. But such is life. They will learn or they will die. And in these difficult times, I very much fear the latter is far more likely than the former.

Relationship Note on Victus

He seems to think I am somehow in need of proving myself to him, and also that I am some kind of spy for - someone. To look into Thrax affairs. He is mistaken on both accounts, but accusing me of the latter and demanding the former is an excellent way to irritate me. I don't have time for these games, no matter how much my brother wants me to make amends and play nice.

Relationship Note on Mae

A bundle of energy, this messenger seems to take her job quite seriously. If she's trustworthy enough, then most certainly I'll be using her for some correspondence. And some other things I have in mind - she is eager for work and pleasant to talk to and seemingly smart as a whip. So we'll see what comes. I'm interested.

Relationship Note on Hadrian

He interrupted a perfectly good conversation about politics and the protection of the city to try to make random trade agreements. I'm not sure if he was defective or drunk or just very, very confused but this man is not someone with whom I want to spend a lot of time. As one of my companions said - it would be most unfair if everyone in the Malvici family were as exceptional as the Lady General Calypso.

Relationship Note on Gabriel

A serious man, he just led a successful campaign against the Bringers of Silence. He did not stop them in entirety - it will take more than his forces to do that - but his forces survived the first engagement, at least. He is a good man, dedicated to the defense of Arx and Arvum, and now more than ever I think his steady, serious hand is both necessary and wise. Let us hope that some of the issues he faces are resolved, and soon.

Well, that didn't last at all. I turned over the Lord Commander's sword for several reasons, but events being what they are, I have accepted the promotion to First Captain. Which means that if Lord Commander Rymarr does something incredibly heroic and pays the price, then this whole cycle starts over again with an unexpected promotion. Nonetheless, the reasons to turn over the sword are swiftly being resolved, and so while I am content to be First Captain, I suspect that if I am ever again the Lord Commander, it will remain the title with which I eventually die.

Speaking of something incredibly heroic, I'm not sure I approve of this plan of his. It's heroic, to be sure. And it might have several different benefits, but it is also quite the gamble. I had no idea he was such a gamester. I will, however, support his choice whatever it is. Not just because he's the Lord Commander, but because I do understand the occasional need to make difficult choices that are hardly understood by observers.

In other news, my work continues unabated. I am close to a breakthrough I think - I hope? But the uncomfortable matter of the Thrax succession and its rippling effect through Arx is another difficult point. That's a matter I'm keeping a close eye on, even if it is mostly because I am concerned for my family, despite my current status.

'May you live in interesting times' is a curse for a reason.

Relationship Note on Gabriel

Duke Gabriel Bisland, an honorable man who was Regent for ten long years of peace. And when a Regent was no longer needed, he stepped down peacefully as well. He is a hard man but a good one, and I cannot imagine who would be better suited to the Regency now. With all the threats to the Compact, both internal and external, he is a man I would trust to look after the interests of the Crown. The King's Own could work with him. I sincerely hope the Council sees reason and appoints him sooner rather than later.

Relationship Note on Luna

A refugee from the woods, where demons apparently killed most of the people she knew, she's been sleeping in the streets with her bear. Her bear! His name is Reinhart and against my better judgment I've introduced her to Valerius. In any case, she sees spirits which is interesting to me for more reasons than I care to name, and apparently she dances too. And likes sweet drinks over whiskey, but nobody's perfect. I'm looking forward to seeing her again.

Relationship Note on Rymarr

He is quiet and stalwart, his whole being focused completely on the task at hand - protecting the King from enemies both foreign and domestic. Well, almost completely focused. His sense of humor is understated and brilliant, and his taste in cider impressive. Nonetheless, I am quite comfortable taking orders from the new Lord Commander, and I could not have entrusted the sword of my mentor to a better man. He is sometimes a little tactless, but I can appreciate that. And he is meant for great things. Hopefully those great things won't get him killed.

Three weeks since I turned over the Lord Commander's sword to Rymarr. Three weeks. You people couldn't hold it together for three solid weeks before gleefully marching toward the apocalypse? Really? Some of my reasons for turning over the sword still remain. Others are now resolved. My decision stands, but apparently a woman's work is never done.

Really? Three weeks?

Relationship Note on Valerius

Oh, little brother. I see you, trying to turn the tables and protect me for once. Even when I don't need to be protected. But after all these years, I still love you every bit as much. I'm proud of you, with all your wine and women and shenanigans untold, I see the man you've become and I love you for it. Keep it up, brother-mine. They haven't seen anything yet.

So that is done. Rymarr is now the Lord Commander of the King's Own. A surprising number of people showed up for the ceremony - I suppose it isn't the sort of thing that happens very often, after all. Perhaps they'll see another peaceful passing of the sword in their lifetime; perhaps not. Someone asked me if it felt odd to not be carrying the sword of the Lord Commander, but I just smiled. My hand will always remember the weight of it, and perhaps one day I will wield it again, but power is not at the heart of what I crave.

Besides, I still have the shield.

It is possible to find the whole of one's family detestable with the exception of one or two members of it. No, it was not a question.

As for my opinion on the current subject of talk that has been circulating around the City -

- if you want to hear it, ask me.

Otherwise, I have a job to do.

A meeting with the Lady Regent and a new member of the King's Own, this evening. Only marginally slipped up, by neglecting to carry the King's Own blade. I still had the Crown's Defender at my side. It didn't seem proper to have that when meeting the regent. When standing amid the Hundred. They need to see me as a leader, now, instead of a former protege.

We began laying out the groundwork for improvements - to strengthen ourselves against any oncoming threats. Pending a Minister, where we will then turn plan into action.

(Would you be proud of me, Lord Dayne? Gloria, Bless. I wish to hope that you would. Yours was the judgement that mattered the most.

One day, soon, my private mourning of your loss will cease.)

Until then.

Not terribly long after I received my rapier from Master Meadson - (it is a terribly beautiful piece of weaponry, and feels a little more mine than Lord Dayne's blade.

My blade, now.

I will carry both. But, the Crown's Defender is mine. Without the history or the sadness of loss attached to it. I shall write a new story with it, Gloria willing.)

--and stepped into another shop, The Storied Blade. I met the Lady Fidante (walking blossom of scandal) and Mistress Hana. The former provided me with a piece of excellent advice: revel in one's reputation.

It was only slightly more proper than my previous interaction at Ferron Arms and Armor.

Oh, blast it.

Poor humor and ill timing. However, it was such a pleasure to meet Master Ferron and the High Lord Valardin. Although, I personally feel as if my mentor would be bemused with me - if he had witnessed the interaction.

(It feels uncomfortable... to be so noticed.)

Currently, I do believe that I would fully benefit from a tutor in charm and comportment.
