I know I said I would not add my thoughts to the current discussion and I am going to stand by that, but I did want to acknowledge something that has lifted my heart over the past few days.
What started, as it often does in the pages of white journals, voicing frustrations, and those that felt hurt by them firing back. As the discussion carried on something subtle, but something I consider quite wonderful happened. People shared their thoughts, their beliefs in a frank and honest manner. In doing so I saw people stay true to their own beliefs, but gained a greater understanding of the beliefs of others. Understanding is a powerful thing and it will help us to see that the virtues and values we hold are largely the same.
I think this is one of the most important reasons that Velllichor asks us to keep our journals. It is not only to preserve knowledge but to foster understanding. This is why it is never shameful to share your beliefs, even if most do not hold them. Wise guy that Vellichor.

Personally when I am lost in the woods I follow the squirrels. Those devious little tree rats always seem to know the way back to civilization and how to being the biggest pests possible.
Though one of the best things you can do is invest in a Blanchard trained courser. I can promise such a horse will remember it's way home better than you will the vast majority of the time.

A favor can inspire us from the frivolity of the tourney pitch to the grim oppression of the fog of war during the most dire of battles. I think there are few things more knightly than keeping the favor that most inspires you in dark times as well as the light.

What works in competition is not always what works in battle. When your job is to stand firm and protect your ally's flank if you evade you are just making an opening for someone to strike at them.
My uncle Lord Commander Dayne had a saying, "In a duel speed kills, in battle discipline wins." Because I will never have his amazing alacrity I have always believed that meant having the discipline to stand your ground and trust your comrades to do the same will keep you alive.
So far it has.

The Tournament of Gloria was a wonderful of experience with many amazing fighters. I was worried I let my team down by being the very first person knocked out of the fighting, but they carried on to win and I am honored by their resolve and that I could be part of their team.

My Brother Prince Valen taught it to me when I was his squire. My brother Prince Vance even had to pay him a healthy purse of silver because he thought I'd not be courageous enough to use it! Clearly that the woman thought it might have meant I was offering to 'peal her eggs' was due to some regional dialect difference.

Relationship Note on Fergus
I must have started writing this and tore up the page 100 times before finally penning this one, and still I don't know if I have the right words. I still as I put them to paper none of these sound like a suitable tribute, and so, I will just write what I feel.
Fergus, you and I were as different as two men could be. But we became family when and Marian married, though not by blood, but in spirit. Then one day, quite literally in passing, you just looked to me and called me 'brother.' It was just one word in place of goodbye when you and Marian were leaving the manor. The thing about Fergus was that he was a man that could say so much while speaking so little. When he says 'brother' there is a weight to it. It was more than word to Fergus, it was an oath, an affirmation and it settles on your shoulders and you feel that there is a trust that Fergus gives to very few people and it humbled me to hear that word from him.
Somewhere, someone is smiling very smugly right now. They think they have struck a great blow and taken one of our strongest heroes from us. I cannot wait until that smug smile fades, as the slow, cold creeping of dread crawls up the back of their spine like the cold steel poised to sever it. Because they are going to find they could not kill you.

You will live on the edges of the swords of every Northland warrior you inspired that will fight in your name, ever striving to be warriors that would make you proud. You will live in the memories, the stories and deeds of those who loved you and will continue to carry on your battles. The Nox'alfar murdered and mutilated many good people, two high Lord's amongst them two High Lords. Regardless of whose fault that was I think we need to stop acting offended when people mistrust and want nothing to do with them. Or when the point out the are perhaps, still dangerous.
Being comfortable that this alliance with them was the right decision is something that is going to take years... Maybe even decades or generations before many of us feel it was the right decision. In the end we did renew the treaty, but there is no reason we should not expect the Nox'alfar to actually try to earn our trust now.
