Relationship Note on Reigna
The day I took my Physician exam I remember the terminal case well, one I shall never forget. It was hard, my heart cried for that woman and moreso for her brother still and the rest of her family. But I would never accuse you of cruelty for it, for this too is part of being a Physician as you said. The work is necessary, hard yes, but just because something is hard does not mean we should turn our back on it.
It takes the sort of courage that often isn't seen to do what the Mercies and the Physician's Guild do daily, it takes a strength of character and spirit to face pain, death, and illness and keep going, over and over and over again. I can say that I am often, and repeatedly, impressed by those I work with from the apprentices straight through to those who run both the Mercies and the Guild. They fight battles and wage wars unseen, heroes all.

When I went to help the rescued children find their place at the Murder and help with their protection and being seen to, I could not have imagined such resilience if I had tried. Other than coloring Sir Daemon, and he looks very nice with the myriad of lovely chalk paintings, these children have show a capacity for joy that I wouldn't have expected.
I won't say that my own armor hasn't found itself adorned by a flower or two, or twelve. I am happy to supply canvas to such incredible artists. I am humbled by the strength these children show and can only hope I face any future hurdles with the the same.

The secret is to drink enough at the start that you don't feel it very much, and when you get in the water you move. Lots, you move lots and lots. You did well to try though! And take a hot bath, or a lot of hot baths, feeling in the toes are bound to return.....eventually.

There is nothing so bracing as getting into a winter ocean and staying there as long as you can. I am rather glad that Monique didn't die, that Marian and Barric were there to help get her out! We should make a party of this more often, with booze. Rum of course.

I don't know that anything said here will be sufficient to make you aware of the hollow ring in your words. As a knight and as a warrior I am aware of loss, and of the fierce joy of battle, as a knight and as a physician I am aware of the value of life. It is good you have at least some reason to bring your people home alive, if not in one piece. One hopes that one day their value as more than a commodity occurs to you as well.

Life is finite, this should be obvious but clearly as it's loss is so prevalent it needs to be spoken. To take a life is to end possibility, to steal away everything that the one who dies is capable of. It is ripping away someone's family, someone's loved one. It is a loss that the one who took that life might never feel but can alter the course of other lives.
To find joy, /ever/ in such a taking is to show a distinct lack of compassion and empathy that is concerning. I have taken lives, I will take more, but never not once have I found joy in the taking. Each one weighs heavily upon my heart and mind, and as time passes the weight gets heavier and I welcome it, it is a reminder of what I have done regardless of the reasons, it was my actions that ended those lives.
Duty, honor, defense of yourself or others, those I can understand killing for. Joy? That doesn't make the list.

Recently my thoughts have turned to language and communication. Strangely, one would think they were the same thing but oddly they are not. I find that in the past week, many times in fact, I have come across people speaking the same language, but the understanding of the words intent versus how they were taken have been an entire miss.
This is not anyone's fault mind, but rather it shows how easy it is to misunderstand. Language is a powerful tool, it can build and ruin lives, reputations, cause harmony and discord, create and destroy relationships. The words we speak are often said without careful consideration for how they might be received, and far too often the assumption of the recipient is ill intent rather than any number of other possibilities.
I am just as liable to misunderstand, speak without forethought, allow my emotions to color my words, and assume the worst of others. This is a weakness I certainly do, and will continue to, strive to correct. I think too often as well we forget that everyone has their hard times, their own personal demons, sometimes we let them overtake us, other times we are able to hide them.
This is nothing more than my thoughts on something I have observed, and been myself part of. This is not meant to be anything more than a sort of thinking aloud, perhaps an external reminder to myself that my words can have power beyond what I anticipate and to keep that in mind before I let them out.

Today I took my exam to become a full physician with the Physician's Guild. The journey to this point has been amazingly instructive, and having passed the exam I am very pleased to be able to provide further service. My specialty is combat medicine, most specially because that is where I will most often be needed. I am beyond grateful to my guild for the guidance and patience to help me get here.

It amazes me daily how people can change your life for the better. The simplest thing, a smile on a bad day, a kind word when things are tough, or someone to just listen to you say silly things on your mind or laugh at your stupid joke. All of it can do amazing things to make your world brighter. Thank you to all of those of you out there who brighten my day.
