Relationship Note on Hadrian

I can confess I once tried to get into a title wagging contest with my nephew Hadrian.

I lost. Badly...

No shame in that game.

There is a Torean saying about one who bears more titles than necessary is one who is compensating for something.

However this does not apply to Marquis Hadrian. He has just the right amount of titles.

Marquis, conscripting random Ostrian commoners to declare you are a "swell guy" and requesting "crisp high fives" is not fair on the random Ostrian commoners, especially when they're given a new silk shirt and two bottles of our secret reserve to make up for it.

(For those that aren't aware, I am kidding.)

All this talk about fickle hearts...

Better to be without one, it sounds like. And here you tried to make it sound as though it was a bad thing.

You can win even when you lose. Because, even in losing, you might still succeed in making your point. In saying you refuse the way they want it.

That is a perspective I hadn't necessarily considered, but rings true. If we find it anathema that a child inherits the economic debt of his or her parents, then shouldn't we also be against a child inheriting the spiritual and social debts of his or her parents?

Alternatively, I can make you do all those things by sparring daily with you until you're bulked up and scare people with the ripple of your muscles. You do want that, right? Imagine how many Donkey Knights tournaments you'd win by sheer musculature alone. You could carry the donkey /and/ the dragon!

Really, now, Marquis? I just so happened to overhear Flora telling Charity how much she would LOVE seeing you, shirtless and...dare I say it? Oh, I do so dare. One must be scandalized now and again...

Sweaty and covered in dirt.

Charity agreed, of course. With a titter, in fact. Then together they giggled about how they could offer to draw you a bath and give you a massage thereafter.

But I guess you do not really want to transform that sunken little bird's chest of yours. And oh, as my uncle noted, once you creep into the thirties, of which you are not far from, you start to get this bit of paunch at your gut. It isn't as if I have to look at it, so I am really not that concerned.

Relationship Note on Hadrian

It has to be the tip-tapping the ground with one's boot thrice, before a running start, with your hand held up in just the right angle to catch the other's and let the sound echo across the patio.

The truest of crisp high-fives are a thing of beauty and constant motion.

By the way, your own training regimen will involve rolling around and learning how to use a tower shield. Hope you're ready.

Love,

Theron

Relationship Note on Hadrian

One would never think that we'd get along as much as we do, but there you have it.

Thanks for the kind words. Know that I find you to be brave, honorable and willing to make sacrifices on behalf of your honor and word. These are the great makings of any leader worth their weight in gold.

And you took the opportunity that was given and I think Ostria is a much stronger place as a result.

I know that with you at the side of my Marquessa, Mazetti will remain growing stronger and Ostria will prosper as a result.

I'm proud of my family, and that includes you.

Also, any killing I'm doing has to be sanctioned or in defense of my House. Doesn't make much sense to start putting people down otherwise.

I undoubtedly think it is an honor and a pleasure both to have met you, and I enjoy your sense of fun, as without you there would be no Donkey Knights, and the barbs you exchange with my cousin. I'm a year late, so I've been told, but welcome to the family, Marquis.

Relationship Note on Hadrian

Two thousand three hundred and ninety four marks for physical annoyances. These can include, but are not limited to: Looking at him funny, raising my voice too high, not talking loudly enough, or 'doing that thing that you do, you know what it is.'

Three thousand forty seven and a half for mental annoyances. These can include, but are not limited to: Asking what that thing is. (Because I do not know, even to this day). Mental exhaustion after having to 'deal with all of this,' and waking up and having no idea if it is day or night because he has to live in a 'literal cave now, what is wrong with you people.'

I've received marks for things I did exactly the same the day before but did not get a mark at the time. I have also received marks for things a relation has done, such as 'Every time I hear the term grand niblings,' as well as 'for any time I hear Theron talk about his hair.' Oh! I also received a thousand marks in one go after I took the chalk board and broke it, and another five hundred for smashing all of the chalk.

There are also 'talk back' marks, which is to say if I argue or contest a mark, I can receive another mark, though we have shuffled some off to the mark court, where I can contest them properly via the accepted legal forms, which master Luigi has expertly drafted.

At a rough estimate, however, it will be another thirty-seven years, at which point one or both of us will be dead, and I certainly will not have borne any children. However, there is hope! For our anniversary, the Marquis has generously cleared my entire record.

We have survived year one.

I suppose being unable to watch your wife utterly decimate the competition is boring. That is called being a considerate host, not, as you name it, fear.

I challenge you, here and now, Marquis Mazetti: you and me, a donkey duel.

Unless you are too afraid, that is.

I know I'm not.

Relationship Note on Hadrian

There are those among us that do not lift a weapon made of steel to fight, but instead use their words. Some hold lofty titles as nobles, diplomats, courtiers; while others, just as skilled, claim only to be merchants, tavern keepers, or conmen. Just as anyone, regardless of social strata, might pick up a sword and use it, so can words be wielded with great effect by the high and low alike. In my experience, these wordy warriors fall into similar categories as their martial counterpoints.

Some wield blunt weapons, seeking to use the force of their impact to achieve their goals. They will bludgeon and batter you with their views until you yield or fall beneath the press of their onslaught.

Others will arm themselves as a knight, protecting their thoughts in layers of padding and hardened edges before wading into battle.

And then there are those that can use their conversations like a proper duelist. Quick, sharp rapiers their tongues become, dazzling to behold. Each responds is a honed riposte, each counter-argument a parry, and the space between filled with the flash of cloak or the dance of feet. These are the men and women that understand a conversation can be entertainment; that conversation does not have to drive straight to the end, nor does it have to be something dreaded. You can talk to another person for the thrill of it.

Marquis Hadrian is a duelist. I spoke with him to no real point, yet I was entertained the entire time.

Sadly, my windows are not downwind of the Rectory kitchens, and the cook rarely, if ever, burns her bread. Of if she does, I suspect she would cut off her own right hand and join the Silent Reflections willingly rather than admit it to anyone.

So, no. Not at the moment.
