Relationship Note on Esoka
Dame Esoka was another tutor this week. We met outside for a spirited run and I realized quickly I am not a runner! Two miles twice a day; that is what she recommends. I'm not a lazy gal, but I'm not sure how I'll be able to accomplish hat goal without passing out first.
So far the morning run has been invigorating. I mean it's shit to get up earlier than usual but once I'm out there and hit a stride, it feels great. The evening run flat out sucks. There is no sugar coating that.
After our run, she made me climb a tree. I thought I might die. It's been years since I've climbed trees but when we reached a sturdy bough and had a moment to talk and look out onto the world from way up high, it put so many things in perspective for me.
I look forward to more training exercises with Dame Esoka in the future.

The integration of my Greenwoods into House Riven was a challenge, but the steadfast service Dame Esoka has given to our house has been crucial in sustaining the alliance made all those years ago. I have pledged to instruct Dame Esoka on the finer aspects of needlework. If I am lucky, she will fling her embroidery hoop across the room some number of times fewer than five. If I am unlucky, she will fling said hoop across the room substantially more times than that, at the conclusion of which said hoop will lie in ruins around my neck. This is why I am tonight reviewing several authoritative treatises on the matter. I suppose it is possible that my mastery of this subject in theory will not translate to the ability to sew in practice. In that unlikely event, however, I shall take solace in two facts:
(1) It is Esoka, not I, who will be handling the needles; and
(2) We shall be making only a kerchief.

The first time we sparred, she smashed me into an urn five feet across the room. The second time we sparred, she smashed me into a different urn five feet across the room. The third time we sparred, I made sure to remove all urns from the room.

Dame Esoka is ... a good friend to me, and a wiser woman than I in certain particular ways. And ... she's right: it's good, in the midst of chaos and siege and terror, to just sit down for an hour or so and be a woman for a little while.

I spoke with the Dame from the forest, The one they call Dame GreenBlood. She seems to be a good sort, and thinks my plan shows merit and has some promise to it. She has offered her help which means I am perhaps one step closer to being able to help and do something about this siege to try and bring it closer to an end or at the very least help with the mood within the city and help to break the spirits of those outside its walls. I only hope I have the time and can find the rest of the help needed. Otherwise this is likely to be suicide.

Dear Me,
Esoka! What a brilliant, brave name for a force of nature! She's beautiful and her arms are magnificent, the arms of a woman whose blade is an extension of her every movement. I'd love arms like that, graceful lines of muscle from shoulder to wrist.
She leapt from the ramparts when we defended the Seawatch Gate. I would never have had the courage or even the notion to attempt such a mad and marvelous thing without seeing her soar. The next thing I knew, I was following her through the air, loosing arrows at a bringer on my way down.
Between the two of us, we slew the beast. The gate held. I felt such kinship and delight to have a comrade-in-arms. I am sure I shall remember her the rest of my days.
Of course, we would never have had the chance without the brilliant command of a man-at-arms who stepped up to marshal the archers -- and the brave archers, themselves. They demolished a horde of shavs, allowing Esoka and I our chance at the bringer.
By the grace and blessing of Gloria, we lost no men in the action.
I have been told that until I see a battlefield of a thousand slain, I shall never know the true nature of war. I have no doubt this is true. However, if there were ever any conflict in my heart between remaining safe home and placing myself on the lines... it is now gone.
As long as there are people to defend, I shall, no matter what cost.

Relationship Note on Esoka
The old bloodlines of the Wood may be as tangled as vines and as tall as trees, but I know that somewhere in that grove of sires, Esoka is one of those ivies that tangles with mine. I've known her for a long time, and she is a bold, familiar presence in even the oddest of places. She's earned my loyalty time and again.
