Trust and twins, sewers and ships, painting and planning, ministers and music, preparations and payments, gifts and guidance, commerce and confusion, rum and reality. Meetings and conversations afterward with King Alaric and Princess Jaenelle contain a lively, challenging mix of subjects ranging from delightfully witty to poignant. They make me think beyond the boundaries my mind usually sets, teach me things I did not know.

Relationship Note on Joslyn

I've heard so many refer to Joslyn like a warrior-woman, running the gauntlet, sparring and such. To see her calmly, clad only in a towel while teaching a small weapons lesson patiently, capably and confidently (and with a bit of amusement) tends to confirm that opinion of others.

Relationship Note on Isabetta

My wits will require sharpening to keep up with this one and my brother when they get together. When a comment from one is parried, the other slides in an equally teasing or shocking remark from the side, all in good fun. Mostly. Wonder who the lucky artist will be to enjoy receiving their commissions.

The Merchant's Assembly that Princess Jaenelle and I organized had a nice turnout and a nice mix of traders, mercenary guards, and craftsmen. It makes a good network base for inter-house trading plus learned of some new craftsmen I may well be using some time in the future!

Relationship Note on Tikva

We share a love of music, amusing conversation, charitable works. We've given gifts to each other and are quickly becoming good friends. We have only a little mischief planned together.

I pity any crafters my mischievous brother may contact regarding a gift of shin-protecting boots for his sister. They may well have to choose if they craft for a satisfied customer should he request any details such as a different size for each foot, heels that change a gait into a wobble, shafts of different heights, or incorporate malodorous raw leather, or craft for a satisfied wearer who would be happy to display their fine work instead of just throwing it at said brother.

Love her fashion sense. We've grown from acquaintances to friends during long woman-to-woman visits laced with advice, gossip and suggestive wit.'.

Relationship Note on Luis

My rapscallion brother, sometimes an unmerciful tease whose goal in life seems to be trying to make me blush or shock me, not that I don't try to hold my own with the bantering exchanges that he often wins. He is not hurtful or mean, more that he worries I tend to get too lost in music or duties to just live life and tries to pull me into it. Sometimes that creates awkward moments, even a little jealousy of each other, but he's got my back just as I have his, or try to.

Relationship Note on Calypso

The more I get to know her, the more I like her. Her presence is both reassuring and fun. It is nice to feel a friendship grow.

Must remember to thank Lord Wash for the dance again. The man has some moves, and a way of bringing the best out of his partner, leading through steps never done before in such a way they looked well practiced.

Relationship Note on Alaric

King Alaric, intelligent, kind, witty, willing to offer advice. The more I talk with him, the more I appreciate him as King. And he likes my music!

Relationship Note on Wash

As many times as have met, still not sure what to make of Lord Admiral Washburn Kennex when he seems to have forgotten my name, again, and it makes me a bit wary of him when that happens. Devoted to his wife and child.

Things I've learned the last few days:
1. I tend to procrastinate making Journal entries.
2. King Alaric has a greater capacity for alcohol than I. At least I had the common sense to stop before saying or doing something would regret later. Staggering would have been so very ungraceful.
3. Romantic rose gardens sometimes inspire sad songs instead.
4. Merry tunes please the spirits, or so I have been told.
5. Marquessa Cambria's cheeses pair very well with Granato wines.

I got into the head of a giant today (no crude puns intended), or rather its skull, a huge, big , giant one that could hold a few people if they did not mind being a little friendly. And scary stories got told by Duchess General Calypso and Sparte. I guess if you are going to hear scary stories, being inside a giant's skull is a perfect place for them. I hope if I have dreams tonight, they will be peaceful ones.

An interesting time today. The delightful Prince Aiden spoke enthusiastically about the menagerie, and his building of a place for animals to get healing done. He said he had never found an instrument they did not like. So after he left with a parade of messengers and armloads of paperwork, Ariela and I visited the exhibits. Curiosity is my bane. I didn't know what instruments the Prince had tried.

We fetched three I own that are easy to carry but most of the animals were at a distance. If anyone expected me to climb in an enclosure with a tiger, or any of the other critters they are out of their gourd. Birds did not seem to mind any of the three. I learned to make little chirpy staccato sounds on the rebec mimicking some of them. Wonder what the chirps meant? (If you are reading this sis, just cause I made chirps, I'm not flighty.)

Next were bugs, and fish, and lizards. After listening to the hissing cockroach, decided not to try playing in there. That left only that big dome butterfly garden. I don't think butterflies are animals, or that would like music, don't even know if they have ears, but I played anyhow since I had been lugging those instruments around. They ignored the lute, just fluttering around. They seemed to fly by to dodge the dulcimer hammers, but at least two of them enjoyed riding the bow with which the rebec is very slowly played. I assure you, not a single butterfly was hurt in the experiment, not even the one that kept landing on my freckles. My sister may never forgive me for making her late to spars at the Hart for the sake of playing to a butterfly.

Note: Yes, too much wine makes for rambling journal entries.

Relationship Note on Quenia

Marquessa Quenia and I have been getting along quite well. I like her, and we seem to trust each other. I'm acting as one of the voices of our house and together we're hosting events, making trade contacts, renewing contact with those of our fealty. It is not all just house business between us. We've been sharing a glass of wine and a few laughs, talked together for hours. I think we are growing to be a good team under her guidance.

The current ever dreaded, never-ending to-do list.
1. Avoid sniffing, plucking, nibbling or touching the unknown plants now sprouting in the plant beds.
2. Figure out what the unknown plants are sometime, preferably soon before falling into them accidentally.
3. Relocate the hammock so not to fall out if it into the unknown plants
4. Try, again, to figure out how to get, not fall, out of the hammock
5. Locate sample bottles of wine for Lady Melissa to evaluate-re possible trade negotiations between she and Quenia.
6. Find lost childhood workbook, practice inept song written in it when 12 just in case King Alaric really meant it when he said he wanted to hear it and was not just being charmingly polite.

Relationship Note on Ian

Lord Ian Kennex, a new friend. I don't make friends as quickly as some and think it takes time for some friendships to grow. Lord Ian and I have shared companionable silences, varied conversations, spent time learning interests over the past month we've been at the same events and places. I've spoken with him often enough to gain a degree of trust, see different moods, different sides, and find myself liking him because of (or maybe in spite of) them. He's got courage and a persistence that I can respect.

Lovely setting, sad and hopeful and brave all at the same time. I played a song, offered prayers at the shrines arranged along the shore, and spoke with a few of the others attending.

The art work was well executed, of topics related to slavery, and evocative, thought provoking. They were not something I would want to hang in my bedroom or dining room but powerful. The crowd was large and I only knew a few people who were there.
