What makes someone a warrior?

I was given to the Salt when I was young, and when I was old enough to wield a cutlass, I spilled my share of blood upon the high seas. I killed many people--shav pirates, escaped thralls, or other malcontents--who found us, or who we found. I tasted saltwater and swam with sharks. I wear the scars of Silence, the Gyre, and the Lodge, among other battles.

For all this, they call me a warrior.

It is one of many paths, and there will be journals to come that will speak of their perspectives, but if you wish my perspective, being a warrior is not always about superior skill. It is also about understanding the mercy of preparation and a quick resolution, the weight of a weapon readied, and the scars that come with glory. It is to fight despite the odds you face, and to know that one day, you will not find victory but death, either by circumstance or choice.

Perhaps you may walk down that path, or you will never see it come to pass. But should the day come where you receive a weapon of your own, treat it with the respect it is due. One day you will kill someone with it, and if their face haunts your dreams, better that it is the face of an enemy that sought to destroy you or yours, than the face of an innocent.

Winter is here.

Perhaps the snow will remain white, yet I suspect it will be red, instead.

Of course sailors sing. There is a reason we have sea shanties, after all. They are especially popular with the oarsmen.

Your Majesty is too kind. May your own works continue to improve, if you believe your current efforts are inadequate.

Instead of a light, I would recommend a ship. Ideally, one with large sails and a narrow profile, built for speed.

I question what manner of offense I had done to warrant this level of pun-ishment. I will endeavour to make amends, unless you were actually kid-ding.

I never thought I would see a goat outside books until today. But these ones are the size of a cat, with stumpy legs more akin to a child's toy than what I have seen in illustrations. Apparently, they are a breed unique to Keaton holdings.

They are also abhorrently destructive. At least the children like them. Good for them.

A cat has been scratching on my door and making noises outside as if it wants to be let in. I suspect it is the kitten that had ransacked my room some time ago, but all of the Claw's brood look the same to me.

I've taken to studying in the library to evade the incessant meowing and scratching, but in turn I am treated to the sight of the heir of Maelstrom running into the shrine with kittens in tow.

The fish have my pity, but I suppose it is encouraging to see that the despair has not taken everything in Arx.

((The handwriting is shakier than usual. The loops aren't entirely round, and some of the letters have been etched in odd angles.))

It will take some time until the dreams return to the sea. For now they are full of forests, dying men and women, and horrors read about but never seen until that day. Still, however raw the dreams are, they will fade. They will join the others in the background. They always do.

A kitten managed to sneak into my room; one of the Claw's brood, no doubt. I found it asleep in the bookcase after having made a mess of the place, and it was safely escorted out to rejoin the company of its family. Precautions were taken to ensure I don't have unexpected visitors into my room again.

The renovations will be done within two months, I was told. We'll see.

The renovations are coming along in the Crosses, even if the recent rain has turned the dust into a paste that clings everywhere. Vexing, but promising.

It will remain the hall that it was, but it will also be a place of history and accomplishment, so that all may see the seas Thrax has sailed to come here. Though we move forward, the past should not be ignored or forgotten, but nor should it be blindly worshipped. Change happens for better or worse, even if it has been a difficult thing to endure sometimes.

I may never see the Crosses complete. But I will see it begin.

Relationship Note on Harlex

To my recollection, some of the women in the Isles liked to spread mud over their faces and lie for long periods of time. Supposedly, it was to remove blemishes on their skin and prevent wrinkles.

I have little need for such things, nor do I know for certain whether it works. But wrinkles have been a rarity on the women I have seen during my stays in Maelstrom, so take it as you will.
