Relationship Note on Sparte

When Sparte chose to raise his hand against those of the Faith, he was reckless - his actions risked civil war, they risked being misinterpreted. They insulted the Templars. They insulted the Scholars. They were wrong. But. They were also done from the best of intentions. Foolish action taken with honourable aims earned him out disfavour, and the disfavour of much of the Faith. It also earned him a chance to redeem himself - to show he is capable of growth and change. Of learning.

Recently the Templars called on our brothers and sisters in the Oathlands and pious houses to march on the Abandoned who had caused mischief in the north. Fabricated Valardin armour was found. Two tribes sworn to our enemy lie destroyed. A warlord's redoubt lies in ruins, her armies destroyed. Three threats to the Faith and to the Compact removed by a host of tens of thousands. The most unlikely contingent were from the Knights of the East Light, with Sparte. It is a long way from the Isles to the lands of Blackram. A long journey from Arx as well. Sparte made it because he understood the righteousness of the mission, and yes because his betters told him. He undertook it despite the fact I had made clear I was unsure if I could ever see my forgiving him his transgressions, that wound still raw.

I speak only for the Templars, but for us he has earned his forgiveness. The wound still hurts, and it will not mean forgetting, but he has proven himself to not be an enemy of the Templars, and perhaps even re-opened the door towards being a friend of the Templars. We will see what the future holds.

That was undoubtedly Lieutenant Deepwood's messenger tortoise, trying to make its way back to him. I'm impressed it made it back to the barracks so quickly, I just spotted it in the lower boroughs the other day as I was walking to work. I didn't expect it to return for another three weeks at least.

Each time I think on what we discussed -- more so, the reason he gave for it -- I cannot help but feel a touch of apprehension. Just what has been happening that I had not given much thought towards, over the years? How many stories and rumors have I discounted as nothing more than that? It took me many, many days to even think up those questions, a thought which does not particularly please me.

That tension of the cloth. Sparte, now you have me imagine the surface of water. The surface of water is my cloth. My balance is on a bobbing vessel. The waters roil from life above and below. stirrings of gods and monsters.

Perhaps some discourse face to face would hekp alleviate future misunderstandings?

I never suggested Thrax would do such a thing to the Compact. If the Compact decides to follow Brass then I only believe it fair for the other fealties to help shoulder the economic impact of Thrax losing thralldom.

Don't mind Fiora, Officer Fatchforth. She's just one of the silks as thinks being a noble somehow makes her inherently wiser than the rest of us.

As a commoner who has in recent memory been teaching people heresy and performed an ill thought out plan that got you removed from your discipleship perhaps you should read and re-read a noble's journal before telling them what to do.

But what do I know? You're obviously the wise one here.

Relationship Note on Sparte

It's an interesting conundrum, yes? And my thoughts might surprise those closest to me, that know I far prefer to live in the moment, and seldom give longer reaching outcomes their appropriate due. But intent, I would argue, is the most important thing, not the result. While I could contend that we learn from failure, it makes us grow, that there are many unpredictable things that influence the results... I believe the more compelling case is considering the opposite. If someone has ill and evil intent, but things don't go as intended for them, and it accidentally does good... would you celebrate this person? Would you hold them up and ignore what they were really trying to accomplish? Of course, the matter of the road, given the sheer size and number of people cannot, I think, be boiled down into such simple terms.

Relationship Note on Sparte

The gods would say that intent matters as much as result, I believe. To the Sentinel the outcome of our decisions, of our rulings, of our acts, should be just. To Gloria there can be no good found in an action that produces a righteous outcome through evil means. You can judge for yourself where the balance lies between these things, but perhaps we should look not just to do good but to ensure that that good as the greatest success possible.

That might be the case on this road - and I see many attacking the Lords behind it. I do not. The fault lines this brought up have long been there and long ignored, particularly by those of us happily isolated in Arx.

Various abandoned tribes prey on our roads, we must find solutions. Yet many voices said that this was not urgent, that it could wait for tomorrow.

We integrate prodigals and elevate them at a rate that causes disquiet, should we address these concerns? And the answer from many voices was that this was not urgent, that this was for the best, that it could wait for tomorrow.

Too many neo-nobles are created, pushing at the limits of our societal contract, it causes disquiet to those nobles in the regions, it causes disquiet in the holdings. We are just recognising talent, said the voices, the risk is distant, things will pass, it can wait for tomorrow.

Knowledge of the true scale of the threats we face spreads amongst the populace, and we have made no show that we can defend the people - they will be nervous, afraid, prone to act irrationally. Knowledge can only be good, said the voices, and it is not urgent. It can wait for tomorrow.

Tomorrow is here, and no longer can we put off these big questions. It is a time for leaders, for great heroes. I have faith that we have them, and they will prove themselves in the coming days, weeks and months.

"Brought death and injustice to the Compact."

I was going to write more. But that line about fucking says it all, doesn't it? Fuck you. And if we end up invaded in turn by a powerful empire or two, since we seem about on the brink, just remember how much you praised this 'beautiful' dream, and check your outrage. You wouldn't want to insult other people's dreams, after all.
