Relationship Note on Alrec

You'll have to forgive me, admiral Magaldi. I stayed away from the whites for over a month. I suppose my quill was rather backed up.

The Admiral of Setarco appears to be suffering from some sort of affliction that is making him act like a small child, crying and running away to his room.

Can one of you please handle that? It's making me uncomfortable.

No, no no, you're going about this all wrong! If you want to be an inflammatory individual, you have to do something interesting before you start spouting wild shit. Trust me, I'm an expert. I sing loudly my love of battle and killing, but I've shown again and again that it's directed in the service of the Compact, so it's just a -quirk-. What you're doing now is just a good way to get yourself Abbas'd. What's the way that you boatfolks say it? Turn hard to stern, cap'n, you're heading hard for the permanent fuckup strait!

You feel this is the right track? I freely admit I do not understand your logic, but then I have never betrayed my own people either. Enjoy your new masters, at least someone wants you not that I can see the appeal personally.

I had to see who the Archlector was writing about, and then once I read your White, I had to ask around about your story.

Oh, what a pathetic creature you are. You know, even the Lyceum has little tolerance for people who don't show a shred of cleverness in their utter lack of scruples.

I'm confused. Someone brings up that you murdered a crew of individuals and your response is how silly it is that nobles take oaths or that Thrax keeps thralls? At least thralls can have their freedom bought. It's considerably more difficult to buy someone's life back. Is this all true? This man is just walking around like this is alright?

Relationship Note on Alrec

Archlector Ilvin is not in the city at the moment, so I suppose I can field this one for him.

Limerance is not a god only for Lords and Ladies.

Oaths are held in great regard by commoner and noble alike.

Those who break their oaths are despised by all in the Compact.

I do not know what oaths, if any, were involved with your work for House Darkwater; whether or not a sacred vow was made you are a treacherous man who broke trust, not only the trust you had forged with the House for whom you worked but, and this is even worse, the trust your sailors had in you, when you chose to murder your own people.

You would do best to spend no small amount of time at the Shrine of Limerance. You have a great deal to learn and for which you should seek his guidance. Perhaps you will see where things went wrong. Perhaps you will become a Devotion. Certainly stranger things have happened.

Either way, were I someone who abandoned my duty and killed Darkwater sailors for disagreeing with my choice, I might avoid the Thrax Ward, and certainly Darkwater Reach. No matter how good the rum there may be.

Relationship Note on Alrec

I was very, very stupid and he saw me to safety. There is something about the Admiral that I feel I recognize. There are so many layers to the world. There is the surface, the stories. Deeds done in the past that tongues still whisper of, and yet... is it ever as simple as the stories told? I think not. Ah well. The potted tree can only grow so tall. Limitations are forged by unchangeable circumstance.

Cryptic mystery writings.

Relationship Note on Alrec

Although it wasn't the first time I'd met the Admiral, it has been a very long time since I last saw him. And even when I did, I'm not sure there was ever anything exchanged more than a hello in passing. It was something of a surprise when he decided that lurking behind me was a good thing, but it certainly has turned out to be great fun.

The finer points of lurking casually have been discussed, and he seems to be great fun to just talk to in general. Dashing, although according to him, not heroic.

Relationship Note on Alrec

Alrec Magaldi.

You are a man of consumptive want. Nothing is ever good enough for you.

You can never be content. You will always hunger. It leads you to choices made that you will always regret. You will always regret that you left Darkwater for the Pravus, even as their luxuries sooth that regret.

You will always regret the other choices you have made that compromise your honor and your integrity. You will always regret that your avarice has cost you everything.

Your rank. The respect of others. The trust of others.

I offer you the scorn in my voice.
I offer you the back of my hand.
I offer you the edge of my blade.
I offer you nothing more.

Relationship Note on Alrec

Alrec Magaldi is a cockroach. Or maybe an exotic species of a bearded waterbug. The man served my father in the blessed good ole days that you heard the old-timers speak about on the beaches of Nilanza. He'd sell his mother if he thought there'd be any profit in it. But there's something likable about him - kindred souls that we are, reaving the high seas. I'd run past him in my father's study as a boy while he was a young man trying to make a bloody name for himself from the corpses of other unfortunate souls, but I truly made his acquaintance long after he'd already made it. Serving as the Admiral of Pravus after a truly draconian twist - putting his own bloody Islander men to the sword - Alrec ended up being the commander of the navy which I contributed my privateer services over, policing the seas on our side of the Saffron Chain.

Alrec took a liking to me immediately, and I to him, though we pranked each other mercilessly. The bastard once told me that there was a dolphin on the starboard, and then pushed me over the railing. But between the conquests on sea and at land, Alrec's been as trustworthy a friend as I could ask in a bloody pirate admiral. After the end of my commission, I'd come here and found myself reunited with him at the Hundred Cities Inn. It's clear our relationship has become far more mutually beneficial and mutually intertwined. Get in bed with a spider, get tangled with the webs. But my father and Alrec have a long-standing relationship that adds a framework with which we operate. And then again, Magaldi's bloody great fun even when he's not spinning webs.

Relationship Note on Alrec

I recently glanced over this man's journal. I have little love for this turncoat, but his tale made me think back to a shanty I've heard a few times. It makes me wonder which might be the mother he speaks of.

The shanty goes something like this:

Here's to the women of Darkwater
Those lasses from freshwater and seater
Walk right in, put your money down
Then get ready to fuck all o'er the town

There's blonde Alina from Tor
And she's one hell of a woman
She knows her way around my cock
From the hours we spent at strop and block

Sweet Marissa from Sanctum town
She can really blow me down
She says I'm better than the rest
And lets me fuck the hole I like best

There's Felona from Setarco bay
She really likes to roll around in the hay
She'll wrap her legs around my waist
And mash her tits against my face

Last there's Caity who hails from the east
who in the sack is quite the beast
She'll drink, and fuck me all week long
'til my coin and my seed are both all gone

Relationship Note on Alrec

Anyone with a brain would know I didn't just disappear into thin air during the last five years. Suffice to say I've met men like Alrec before, and I can safely say that I'm on the fence about this one. Sure, he's offering services I find valuable, but it's the arrogance underneath that which worries me. Hopefully he realizes his limitations with time and exposure to actual ground mercenaries. Leading a naval fleet is not even close to the same as leading a Battalion of disciplined mercenaries for land based warfare and escorts.

Relationship Note on Alrec

There's mixed feelings about Alrec. Maximilian has a fondness for the man, firstly. He does. The man's blood runs Dark through and through. He admires his loyalty towards silver, but in the Count's mind Alrec could have had all the silver he wanted if he served under Darkwater, still. To this end, Maximilian sees him as a friend, but if House Thrax orders him killed... well, you can always find new friends.
