Relationship Note on Neilda

No, sister, you are not supposed to sit still. You are not a flower planted, blooming under the fawning adoration of an observer. You are a petrel soaring, feathers stretched over the sea to seek the horizon.

Scholar, thanks to your help, I now know that the thing I came in here curious about is the name of a boat. And I know whose boat. Though, I feel I am no closer to having my curiosity satisfied.

I am fairly confident that it won't be the boat that carries me to Sangris. Yes, Scholar and Reader, in just a few days I will be heading to the Saffron Chain. I'm excited to learn more about a place that has thoroughly captured many imaginations here in the city. Baroness Calla Vaevici has said her home is surrounded by blood red stone. It sounds unbelievable! I'll give you a proper description when I return.

In other news, the final pieces of my armor have been delivered and I have joined the ranks of the Physicians in preparation for the coming threats. It would be quite the boon to someday say I overprepared, but I would accept having prepared precisely enough.

Relationship Note on Raigner

There is a surprising man newly wandering the city, who seems much like any northern giant at first blush: big enough to be a bear, wears an entire bear, drinks enough whiskey each day to kill a bear. There is, in fact, a theme here. When first I encountered Raigner of Stormwall, shipbuilder and huntsman, he was in the training center and doing what one might expect of a man like him - sizing up opponents. I then encountered him several more times in likely places - bars, mostly. However, I was surprised recently when the man found his way to the party I opened to the public to celebrate my twin sister Neilda's and my birthday. It turns out that Raigner of Stormwall is an artist, not just a shipbuilder. Lord Pasquale had procured from him an intricate and delightful puzzle box which now is in the possession of my sister as her gift. It was quite the talk of the party for a moment until Raigner proved capable of generating worthier buzz. Have you ever watched something carved in real time? It's fascinating. What's more fascinating is the imagination and skill of the artist. Raigner carved a three-or-so-foot-tall statue right there at the party! It was, naturally, a bear standing on, perhaps less naturally, a large turtle's back. That statue is now in the possession of Lady Thea.

I share this with you on the chance that some generations from now, should the story passed at dinner tables be lost to the children who inherit the puzzle and statue, they might know something of the origins of them. And, to shine a light on the hidden talents of one Raigner of Stormwall, shipbuilder and huntsman and artist.

Scholar, I submit this to you so that history might remember Lady Esme Fidante, Devotion of Limerance, giver of hugs, a bright light among the stars, and a beauty among roses.

So, too, might it remember Marquis Cadern Blackwood, inspirer of the writing of this white journal, a petter of dogs and leader of people. As well as Scout Rowenova, the friendly and the hungry and the brave. Sir Floppington, the goodest of boys. And, not least, Marquis Valerius Malespero, enjoyer of fine things and collector of fine company, he who seeks to uplift.

Relationship Note on Drake

These bruises are going to take at least a week to start to fade, which will make for an interesting few looks at the pool party coming up. However, I will not bemoan a single one knowing I earned each properly in a spar against an opponent who did not hold back on account of anything. It wasn't even remotely an even match - can I blame adjusting to new armor and an unfamiliar weapon for my my inability to land a single blow? But I can take some pride in knowing I made Lord Drake work for his win.

Thank you for the opportunity to test my limits. They're farther than I suspected.

I will never stop being incredibly thankful to the people of this city for coming out to the gatherings I have. Just a few nights ago, I had a release party for the newest whiskey to be bottled by the distillers in Saikland Greens. We're really proud of this one, and it has been well received! The party was held at the Black Fox, where Julius let us set up a small stage area and guests were invited to tell 'tall tales' - because a story, especially an unlikely one, goes great with a drink. I want to give a great big thank you to all the wonderful storytellers who shared: Prince Grimgar Redrain, Lord Drake Wyvernheart, Duchess Calypso Malvici, Korka Glynn, Lady Neilda Saik, Sir Merek Black, Lord Haakon Eswynd, Lord (Captain) Dycard Blackshore, and Marquessa Quenia Igniseri. The stories included wrestling bears, glittery sharks, riding dragons, and marrying mermaids. Yes, at least one of those is a euphemism. And, yes, there was a "shirtless men interlude" - it's really good whiskey, I guess.

Relationship Note on Neilda

My twin and I had a birthday very recently, which we intend to celebrate soon. However, we've already exchanged some gifts and acknowledged the day in a way that has become fairly standard - not seeing each other at all. That might sound dismal, but it isn't meant to be.

Just after the whirlpool disappeared, we slipped away with a small group to Nilanza, the surprise purpose of which was to catch her an octopus. We were rather successful and pretty much all of us wound up with one as pet (I still haven't named mine). She now has two! I would chase down a hundred octopuses - octopi? - to make her happy. She deserves it. My sister has been working hard for our family, and for me, and I would pluck every octopus from the ocean and every star from the sky if I thought either would adequately make up for everything she has done and will continue to do. She doesn't get nearly enough credit for what she does, for her talents, for her goodness. So, let me commit to the historical record: Lady Neilda Saik is phenomenal and I am one very lucky sister.

Relationship Note on Lucita

Oh. I should probably get Crazy Legs 67 back to the shrine when I go for my next shift. I can talk to the kids about why.

On another note: I sat down with them a couple days ago to have them draw pictures for Neilda as a birthday gift. They both chose to draw scenes from adventures she been on. It was really sweet! Estie seems to have a gift for drawing. Being able to watch my niece and nephew grow up is a gift on its own.

I participated in the medic challenge hosted by General Eirene Riven, placing 5th behind some truly impressive competitors. Congratulations to Mercy Azova Darkwater for placing first, Professor Orick for placing second, and Harlequin Lethe Tyde for placing third! Also, my deepest thanks to the professor for gifting me his prize and speaking so kindly of my skills as a student at the Apothecary College. It was a moment of pride to come in second to him for the portion of the challenge that involved making medicine.

I'm apparently not too shabby at hauling bodies. Though, I may have done the worst at sewing up a wound, but here "worst" means "successfully done, just everyone else was being an overachiever"; and, I stand by my claim that a shoddy stitch job makes a more interesting scar and thus I did the patient a favor. The patient was a steak. It's fine. Also, maybe being made to laugh while stitching is a bad idea? Not likely to be laughing while stitching an actual body up.

Side note: It was wonderful to see so many people in the Southport Training Center. Getting folks out in the winter to utilize the space my family helped make happen felt nice.

I have recently been the recipient of many of the most heartwarming compliments. Some, though, I don't think were meant as compliments - which makes them all the more meaningful. Think simple, matter-of-fact statements that cut through to the core and bely some deeper regard or confidence, recognition of something you can control - the effort you've exerted in developing a skill, perhaps. There was no attempt to flatter or deceive. Honesty.

I've been told I'm too beautiful, even more beautiful than the moon and stars.

But knowing someone would entrust me with their life, or their child's life? In the case of being a midwife, both? I will keep those compliments close to my heart.

What a timely reminder.

I was also recently reminded that we are more than what we can do for other people. These things seem to go together.

I have truly fit a year's worth of experiences into the last few weeks. Opportunities have been jumped at. Connections have been made. Things thought lost have been found. And maybe I'll eventually talk about all of that.

Right now, I want to focus on my gratitude. I am grateful to my wonderful friend who has stuck by me and never judged me for the things others might be unkind about, who seems to think I chose her as patron - but really she took a chance on me as protege, Lady Thea Malvici (who needs to throw around her Droungos General of Southport title more often - did you know she's General of the Phoenix Brigade? She is). Without her, there would have been no Golden Buckle Tourney to brighten spirits today.

Also, the tourney was made all the better by the contributions of Duke Harlan Ashford and Princess Valencia Velenosa. The duke provided the bull and animal handlers, while the princess offered her venue and made sure modifications tot he space were done in a timely fashion. Further, I need to thank Master Apollo Oakwood for his kindness in donating the door gifts and the prize - an ostentatious belt buckle. Further thanks goes to Lady Eirene Riven for coordinating medics that were onsite. Having such amazing help from all corners makes me feel like I must be doing something right.

Reader, if you see any of the riders out and about in the next few days, you should know that they are all amazing. They tried something new! They were brave and good-humored and impressive: Lady Thea Malvici, Lord Drake Wyvernheart, Princess Macda Grayson, Lady Neilda Saik, Mistress Asralyn, Archlector Hamish, Count Orrin Seliki, Count Domonico Magnotta, Scout Rowenova, and Lord Michael Bisland - with special congratulations to Lord Bisland for his astonishing win from lasting 19 seconds on the bull!

Lastly, thank you to everyone who came out to spectate. I'm so glad I had the chance to entertain you today. It was good to see so many in one place. A nice reminder of what it is that we aim to protect.

What did the Queen say when she looked out her window? Looks like another reigny day.
What did the Queen ask for to drink with breakfast? Royaltea.
Why is the Queen good at measuring? Because she's a ruler.

A woman who can't find someone to deliver her baby is having a midwife crisis.

Yes, scholar, I commit these puns to the archive in recognition of my joining the ranks of the Harlequins. You're very welcome.

My cat, Fluffy, is by all measures a scaredy-cat. But I am happy to have its company. I took it out into the courtyard to play in the snow, which seemed to be agreeable for a few minutes.

It seems only fitting that my cat came from a graveyard, though. Funny how things come to be.

We all have our stories. The ones we tell so others might glean some idea of who we are. Not just by name or station, but by deed and heart. Sometimes those stories are embellished or muddied by the passage of time. Others, those stories are outright lies. I wonder, does the outright lie matter less if it is meant to protect you - or others? Or if the lie is told for you and you simply repeat it?

Don't let other people write your story. They'll get it wrong, and you'll lose precious time not knowing your own heart.
