Back from the Greenwood. It was cold.

While others prize the feel of many eyes on their skin, I do not. That much attention means I've done something wrong. Well, it does now. Before ... before, perhaps, I'd have taken it in stride.

Not yet. I hope I find more of that which was me. It's coming back in pieces, walking old routes and paths and seeing old friends and finding new. Perhaps.

Took a long walk in the rain the other day. It was good to be out in the open air, to talk about private things and not-so-private things, smell the woods, the earth. I do it often enough on my own, but it's good with company. Maybe I can convince Mother to come with me next time? Rumor has it she even owns a pair of leather boots.

The wolf fights to survive, but Death when it comes is neither friend nor enemy. It is.

It's the first day of autumn, though I've felt it in the air for weeks.

Some of the leaves are starting to turn color. My greens will need to be traded in for proper hues. Can't stand out like a green bean in a pile of peppers.

I like my home. I like how I understand it, the halls, the grounds, the kennels and the servants, my kin. But tonight I stepped outside, to watch a duel and be a part of the pack. To my delight? It turned out well. More than. I even made a new friend. I vow to be brave more often. New trails to forge, new blood to sniff out.

Who said we were without humor? I laugh at myself all the time. Did I miss something?

With Count Kael's permission, I can keep puppies in my room at night. Better sleep is in my future.

There's a new apprentice at the bakery I pass on my way to the archery grounds. She's an excitable thing, reminds me of a puppy in the constant stages of play. Baking, as I understand it, is a meticulous process and less like 'cooking' than you'd think. Cooking can allow for dashes and sprinklings and pinches of various ingredients. Such behavior is less acceptable at a bakery.

She came up to me this morning, a new pie in hand. She seems to think my sense of smell is keener in her favor. She was wrong. She ran away crying as I tried to stop gagging; her pie smelled like cinnamon flavored wee. It was even more unfortunate that she left the pie there, in the grass, split open.

The baker saved me. He patted me on the shoulder and gave me something to erase the horror that was the sensory experience of that first experimental pie.

"I warned her," he sighed at me after my fourth piece of something called 'chocolate creme pie'. "I told her, it's not like cookied, to measure and sift and-"

Ah well. She'll do better, I'm certain. For now, though, I'm going to take a different route to the training center. My nose can't take another assault like that.

Relationship Note on Sameera

Mistress Sameera took a commission from me last week, for a series of jewelry that required certain specifications, namely to have wolves, hounds, and be indestructible. She's done exactly what I wanted and with minimal communication. I like people like that. I recommend her as a jeweler to anyone that has a need.

I walked the woods the other day, skirted the edge, stayed where it felt safe. While I was there, I saw him. He'd followed me, gray coat like matte steel, ferrous metal tempered, ground with sand to reveal its warm shade. That was him. That was Gray.

He was never a loner. I don't know why he came. But I think he's here for me.

Mother is going to completely unbend over this.

Relationship Note on Jonathan

You were sleeping.

It's just the back of your calves. I'd wear riding boots or something like them, especially if you head through the woods. Ticks and such. You won't feel them crawl.

I want to state for the record to the big noisy Knight rescuing the books in the Ambassador Salon:

I'm sorry I barked at you. You took me by surprise.

What? Shaving themselves? If the hounds and wolves are shaving themselves, we have bigger problems than scandalous kinfolk.

Relationship Note on Fianna

I've seen it. It's quite nice.

I notice some men shave all their body-fur. What's the point of that? Doesn't it get cold? And how will you know there's small, potentially poisonous bugs or parasites crawling across your vulnerable, blood-rich flesh if you have no hair on your legs or arms or all over (I know some of my family run the woods naked, and remain completely hairy because they're -smart-)?

Relationship Note on Tessa

It's a well-kept secret. You have to pry off all the fur and armor and give them a good washing before you can find them in all of that.
