Our Compact has now reached the middle of Autumn. A time of harvests, of feasts, and of preparing for the long cold of winter. It is not the time in which anyone wishes to fight a war, as this tramples fields before they can be harvested, and steals working men and women away from the farms to boot. I grow concerned for the state of the harvests - which means that the Faith needs to ensure that we have laid in enough supplies to support the inevitable surge in the population of the hungry and the destitute. Not to mention those too wounded by the battles to go back to the plow and the hoe. They and their families will require support. The Knights of Solace will be traveling to the battlefields, to protect the wounded, and escort the refugees away from harm. Some of the Crownlands hospices have been nearly built. These can shelter at least the most vulnerable as they make their way to safer havens. It would be unwise to direct them all - or even a majority - to Arx; the Faith shall put out calls to the Seraphs in towns, cities, and villages across the Compact, spread out refugees with pious hosts so that the individual burden on communities is not as great. Those who agree to host their neighbors shall be blessed in all ways by Gild and Limerance. I will have to ask the Mercies to be willing to mobilize as well; not just for battle, but to accompany refugees and help to soothe the illnesses that come with displacement and the contact of populations with one another; it is under such conditions that a small outbreak of disease can become a deadly plague. Donations of food, shelter, and basic supplies will be greatly appreciated, and I will see if some Templars cannot supplement the Knights in conducting these supplies to where they need to go across the Compact. I understand that the House of Grayson is constructing new housing for refugees in their own Ward. Well and good; it will be needed.
Closer to Arx and my own specific duties, I was saddened to hear of the conflict between the Knights of Solace and the Iron Guard. My Knights have been reprimanded for their behavior, and I understand the Lord Commander's guards have been, as well. The Knights of Solace aid the Guard at the Guard's request, and while doing so, they will behave with the dignity and respect expected of the Faithful, or they will answer to me. That said, they are allowed to defend themselves from assault, so do not think them easy targets for harassment. For the good of Arx and the Compact, we stand with the Guard.
The Grand Duchess is missing, and Prince Donrai is dead. I pray that the former is found, the latter receives just judgment under the eyes of the Sentinel, and that his successor embraces the delicate arts of statecraft with the same vigor and dedication with which he embraces the bloody arts of war.
In entirely personal news, I sit before a pile of paperwork that continues to grow larger, no matter how many hours a day I spend working through it. Aside from occasional sojourns for the occasional drink with one of my few remaining friends, it seems to be all I do these days. Although I know that it is my duty, and I do not turn aside from that, I miss the days when I could focus on areas of personal interest, hear cases, have the occasional adventure of my own, rather than simply dispatching others on such things, then hearing their reports. While many shadows encroach, many wonders and miracles are also being revealed; those who have the luxury to experience these things, I pray that you embrace the glory of that, along with the burden.

If there is anything I would ask you all, as children of the gods, to do, it is to look around you and find those in your life who are loyal, who are wise, and who value their families and their liege lords over their own pride or power. When you find those men and women (and I assure you, they are there), take a moment to recognize them, and to reflect on their service. Even a sacrifice made in love is a sacrifice.
In other and more selfish news, I would be most pleased by the Compact, the world, and the gods, if they would grant me just a few days without sorrow, loss, or unpleasant surprises.

Relationship Note on Anze
However, it is an apology worthy of a Prince. It does, perhaps, take a little too much of the responsibility for the incident - Prince Anze was hardly the only person to offer insult or a lack of hospitality, and had there not been a history of such behavior, I suspect that other solutions for the inciting incident could have been offered. It would be a shame if he becomes the whipping boy for the actions of the Regent Council and those whose unacknowledged and unaddressed disrespect encouraged his own.
That said - as amusing as it might be considering current political circumstances - based on this, I can only offer respect for Prince Anze's grace and integrity in accepting his mistake and its consequence. I am looking forward to his service with the Archlector of Gild, should it come to pass.

I am certain that what the few readers likely to search through these journals - now or in the future - would like for me to address is the excommunication of four out of five High Lords for various heresies. I am not going to be addressing that, at the moment. However, I will be addressing something which I feel will help illustrate part of the reason why such actions as are recorded in the journals of this era took place.
An ancient treaty with a culture known as the Nox'Alfar was rediscovered, largely because we broke it. It was, that history might be fair to the Compact, a treaty which we had forgotten, and a treaty which we were actively and maliciously manipulated into breaking, so that an enemy of all life's greatest wishes might come true. That sounds a little dramatic, I know. If, in the future, these events have been forgotten, just know this: the enemy was terrible, and had infiltrated even the highest levels of our society, subtly steering us towards being forced to stand alone against a terrible host.
They really needn't have bothered, for the Compact was more than happy to destroy itself.
However, the treaty was rediscovered, and ratified with what history can but record as a terrible sacrifice. It is not my intention to replay the arguments over this sacrifice here. It is only necessary to know that it was done, as was required to renew the treaty. The other provisions were quite simple: a marriage of alliance in every generation, a respect of ancient boundaries that none had had need to cross in generations, and a military alliance against a mutual threat. In return for the marriage, the respect of boundaries, and military alliance against an enemy whose machinations had already cost us much, the Nox'Alfar offered weapons beyond the making of the vast majority of the Compact, and an Envoy to deal with the arranging of them.
This Envoy, to my eternal regret and shame as both a member of the Compact, and as the Legate of Concepts, was treated with disrespect and a shocking lack of hospitality throughout their stay. Gawked at like a menagerie exhibit. Harassed in the street - even, as I was thoroughly embarrassed to witness myself, by one of the princes of the House who was hosting her, while she was an invited guest of myself. Again, to be fair: a member of my own Faith also harassed the Envoy, but was reprimanded for that behavior. The Envoy was assigned as a guard, not an honored knight or even a noble warrior and diplomat to help smooth the way in the relationship between the Nox'Alfar and Compact, but an Inquisitor. Effective for terrorizing, perhaps, but not precisely an effective or diplomatic choice for a guide and guard.
This is not an attempt to whitewash the strange and even repugnant practices of the Nox'Alfar. But even a sworn enemy, when under a flag of parley, was treated better than what I witnessed and observed, despite the clear guidance of Gild on the subject. Guest right, for those reading who share the educational deficiencies of an unfortunate number of our citizens, allow me to summarize: Once an individual has been welcomed into the home as a guest, it is the gravest of sins for a guest to injure a host or for a host to harm a guest within their walls.
Whether she was liked or loathed, the Nox'Alfar Envoy and her assistant were invited into our walls, our city of Arx. While there, she was subject to harassment and threat of harm, by her hosts. Repeatedly and unashamedly. Eventually, as this discourtesy remained publicly unnoted or unchecked by the heads of the Great Houses, it escalated as such things will to an insult the Nox'Alfar felt they could no longer ignore. A privilege, it should be noted, protected by Gloria, and enshrined into every noble house, that an insult may be challenged and answered for. As befitting the insult of a representative of an entire nation, the Envoy requested a duel to the death, a solemn affair not unknown to the Compact and its nobility.
Although apparently willing to threaten the life of another, Prince Anze Redrain was not willing to risk his own in anything so honorable as a duel. Instead, refusing the challenge, he required the collective heads of the Great Houses of the Compact to protect his life from the terrifying prospect of single combat with an opponent who might have been better than him. To my eternal shame as one born into a noble house, the heads of our greatest and most powerful noble houses refused him - including the House which had agreed to directly host the Envoy, House Valardin, bastion of honor and civility. Or perhaps I do Prince Anze a disservice. Perhaps he was eager to rise to the challenge, and put his life where his threats were, but the Great Houses collectively had so little faith in his skills as a warrior that they believed that he was incapable of meeting the challenge. Certainly, the proclamation put out by his cousin, the High Lord of Redrain, seemed to expect that his defeat and death was a foregone conclusion, and that to avert this certain tragedy, the five-hundred year old treaty with the only halfway friendly power in local existence had to be severed.
Or, equally possible, the Nox'Alfar realized the quality of allies they were getting, and decided that they would be better off going it alone. Either way, I suspect this journal will cause some distress, perhaps even anger. Well, so be it. I am nearly fifty years old, and have not fought professionally for almost twenty years, so I suspect that I will not be nearly so terrifying a foe for the brave and valiant warriors of the Compact.

Only a few days ago, two men dueled in the Ward of the Lyceum. This was not, precisely, over a point of honor, but rather a test of strength, courage, and passion - one which, I must mention, was passed with flying colors on all accounts. I believe that Gloria was pleased by the challenge, the battle, and the grace both winner and loser showed in accepting the match. Some thoughts on the custom and etiquette of dueling follow; these are my own musings, not Holy Writ.
The concept of dueling is one that often causes consternation among the more compassionate and peaceful souls of the Compact, but it has centuries of both historical and theological precedence. Gloria, as the goddess of war and honor, calls upon us to defend our own honor as ardently as we defend our families and our land. This is a show both of courage, and a willingness to trust in the gods to guide the righteous to victory. To fail to respond to a public challenge is, unequivocally, a show of cowardice - unless the challenger is so far beneath one in both competence and honor that to take the challenge would, in itself, be dishonorable. And be warned about choosing that justification; blood feuds that have lasted generations have started for less. It is far better, if an apology or discussion will not mend a dispute, to accept a duel and lose, than to refuse to meet a called challenge.
Likewise, it is imperative to be gracious in both victory and defeat when one duels. At the conclusion of a duel, the gods have spoken; the point is resolved. The winner demands no further abasement than the point of conflict agreed upon in the duel, and the loser (should they survive) provides whatever apology, concession, or restitution is asked for swiftly and without resentment. The point of conflict is ended - it should not come up again, nor should family members or relations urge further actions regarding it. These two combatants may find themselves on the field of honor again, but it should never be over the same point, insult, or conflict. Should the loser of a duel resurrect an insult or slight after the situation has been resolved, the winner is not obligated to give them the honor of issuing another call to duel; they have proven that they do not heed the judgement of the gods. Instead, all righteous people should call out the lack of honor displayed, and both they, and the family which has taught them so poorly, should see consequences throughout society, until the point is rectified and an apology is made. Those who cannot be trusted to uphold the result of a duel cannot be trusted to uphold any agreement.
The question of Champions is one that often comes up in regards to a duel, as well. Should they be allowed? Of course. A Champion, during a duel, serves as vassal to their employer, and thus represents their employer in every regard. Just as a lord might elect a Voice, or a monarch an ambassador, it is to be assumed that the Champion's sword is the employer's sword for the time of that conflict. However, that also means that the Champion's behavior during the duel absolutely reflects upon the employer. Should a so-called Champion cheat, or act with dishonor or a lack of dignity, it as if their employer has done so. Thus, it is important to choose one's Champion not with just an eye towards martial skill, but also honor and piety, that they not feel the test of the gods requires additional aid by dishonorable means. You will be judged, for good or ill, by the quality of your Champion.
When issuing a challenge, it is also important to maintain the honor and the courage that Gloria expects of us all. Do not issue challenges frivolously, and always seek a polite redress of the grievance first. Should the trespasser be willing to rectify their error in a reasonable fashion, there is no point of honor to be disputed. When issuing the challenge, ensure that the challenged has time to respond and to gather his or her second before the duel must meet, and do not seek to make a challenge impossible to be met, either in time, location, or in the restitution asked. One should not duel to the death for a petty insult, nor should a loser be required to cede lands or title. Petty insults or points of etiquette require only first blood. Stronger insults may require a duel until concession or unconsciousness, with a public apology to the wronged, if one loses the point. Only dire insults to one's personal or family honor warrant a duel to the death - accusations of treason, of betrayal of one's sworn oaths, of grievous trespass against a family member or loved one. If one is not certain of the best path to take, seek out the wisdom of an experienced confidant who is not involved in the conflict; priests of Gloria and of the Sentinel will often be happy to fulfill this purpose.
A duel is always a risk. Even a duel only to first blood can become deadly. This is what makes the duel so valuable; an insult to honor must be answered with blood, and with risk - both to make and to defend. In this way, we encourage men and women to consider their words and their actions carefully, as well as to understand the value of their honor, as well as that of their family.

It is a hobby of mine to read the white journals. Not the contemporary ones, nor the ones useful for historical reference, necessarily; those fall into the category of research, and research is work, not play.
And yes, even I play, sometimes. More rarely, these days, than I might wish. But I often explore the white journals of long-dead philosophers, artists, poets, and other such individuals. The twists and turns of their minds are fascinating, and there is such beauty in those simple words or careful images, long forgotten. For example, one that returns to my mind more and more often these days:
"Supposing that I should have the courage
To let a red sword of virtue
Plunge into my heart,
Letting to the weeds of the ground
My sinful blood,
What can you offer me?
A gardened castle?
A flowery kingdom?
What? A hope? "
The original poem ends with another line, but I have omitted it. Not because it is not a fair ending, but because I feel the question remains unanswered, when I ponder it.

It is harder to attend to the beauty of the deepest rivers. From afar, they can appear still, remote, and quiet. But the river dances, down where no one else can see, twisting and tumbling over itself in fast, graceful currents that the sun never quite reaches. The river works, doing its duty on the surface, and carving its own way down below, moment by moment, one grain of sand at a time. The river's beauty is immense and enduring, and worth attending to.

Some have no doubt wondered to what end I have been turning myself since accepting the honorable and holy position of Legate of Concepts. Or perhaps I flatter myself, and no one outside of my rather small community of the Faithful has given it a second thought. I suspect the latter, to be honest - not out of any notion of humility, but simply because the Legates are not a very visible position in the world outside the Church. For those few who might be curious: as Legate of Concepts, it is my honor to stand over the priesthoods of Gild, Limerance, and the Sentinel.
It is quite the change. The priesthood of the Sentinel is actually quite small, and we spend - spent - most of our time mediating conflicts, passing judgement over crimes too minor for the nobility to wish to be involved, and advising judges and lawyers outside our own discipleship. Since the Inquisition acquired its current reputation, the Sentinel has not been the most popular god to devote oneself to.
Limerance and (particularly) Gild are an entirely different affair. Much larger priesthoods, with enough Disciples that I have not yet had the chance to meet them all even in the city, much less outside of it. I am still receiving letters of congratulations from our more farflung cities and cathedrals. And a knighthood: the honorable and esteemed Knights of Solace, who protect our pilgrims and travelers throughout the Compact. Since ascending to the position, most of my time has been spent simply learning about the organizations to which I have become steward and guide.
Having had the opportunity to settle in, I have embarked on a couple of immediate projects, with more to come:
* The repair and revitalizing of the orphanage in the Lower Burroughs of Arx. I have heard that the commons call it 'the Tragedy', and having visited the building, I can see why. It is better than nothing...but only barely. I have already begun soliciting some funds and supplies to bolster it, and it is my hope to completely refit the building, as well organize training and education for the children therein, ensuring them placement as apprentices, recruits, or if they wish it, acolytes or squires within the organization of the Faith.
* Considering the tragedy that took not only the lives of the previous Legate of Concepts and her retinue, but dozens of messengers in the legitimate business of the Crown, it is clear that security along the roads of the Compact could be improved, and more, could be done in a way to free up the standing forces of the nobility to push back the shav threats and deal with whatever threats may arrive. As such, I have proposed building hospice waystations along the major thoroughfares to house pilgrims, messengers, and indigent travelers on consecrated ground, protected by the Knights of Solace. Obviously, this is the work of decades, but I have already received permission from the Lady Regent to begin construction in the Crownlands. I will concentrate there, first, then expand outward as the Church's resources and the gracious permission of the nobility allow.
It is my hope that these small efforts will be a balm on the bodies and souls of the Faithful. I have other projects in mind, but they will require more preparations and greater knowledge of my new responsibilities.

As the spring blossoms into summer, so does talk turn to love, to marriage, and various other affairs of the heart. As blood runs like sap to various points of the mind, heart, and body, do remember this simple thing - be gentle with the hearts of others, lest Limerance turn his eyes away from you.
And, be kind to your own heart. Neither cage it behind walls of iron, nor fling it into every possible conflagration of passion without consideration for how it might burn. It's a difficult path, and it is impossible to live honestly without picking up a few scars along the way, but it is a worthwhile struggle.

I have been appointed to the position of Legate of Concepts. Most outside the Faith are not familiar with this position. Unsurprisingly, as it is largely a bureaucratic one - few of those who interact with the Faith only as laity realize just how much work and organization goes into the things that they Faith provides to the men and women of the Compact. The Knights of Solace require food, housing, training, salaries, and supplies. They must be tracked on their routes so that we might know if they or the pilgrims they escort have been lost, as well as how we might best support them. The Houses of Solace and the many charitable works of Gild require the knowledge of logistics to execute correctly. And so on, and so forth.
So, ultimately, the position of Legate is to handle the paperwork and organization so that the Faith can continue to do what the Faithful require.
I am honored to have the opportunity, although I will miss some of the more hands-on opportunities I have had in my position of Archscholar.

I found myself in the peculiar position of having to intervene in a philosophical quarrel among two of my acolytes this morning. They seemed to be discussing, with some excitement, a recent journal turned into the Archives, of which some enterprising clergy have already made copies of. I say "journal" and not "journal entry", because it was no less than thirty pages long. I don't quite understand how those under my care have the time to go trawling the archives, reading random journals, until they find something interesting - but rest assured, dear reader, I have a solution for that.
Still, once I gave the acolytes more suitable tasks, I could not help but sit down and read through the pages, myself. They are quite well-written. If I had to offer a critique at all, it would be that the argument devotes too little time to a bedrock legal assumption of the Compact: with very few exceptions, the lord or lady of a region determines the laws and their punishments. The paper points out that in every other region, the lords and ladies of Arvum are in accord with their position against slavery (and neglects, sadly, to mention the Faith's long-standing condemnation of such, and the scriptural support for it), and in this, the paper is not incorrect. It simply fails to account for the precedent set for the Crown to openly intervene in a practice of a Great House's land in a matter that is not immediately, and directly, relevant to the survival of the Compact. To endanger that risks endangering the ability of the Great Houses to trust that their right to self rule will be respected, and thus, can be a clarion call to civil war. When one does moral calculations, even against a great and persistent evil, one must also consider the effects of intemperate action. It is, sadly, quite possible to burn down a city while attempting to save a single house.
Unfortunately, the copy I have of the text is signed only with a single name, and no indication of family or fealty. I wish it were not so, for I would desire to speak to this gentleman at length; he might have a stellar career under the Sentinel, if he wished it. Or at least a rousing legal discussion or two.

There are times when anyone, of any rank, may feel overwhelmed and unworthy of the tasks the gods have set before them. Or the tasks which they have voluntarily taken on. There is no shame in feeling like this, or so I have told many others in my years of serving the gods. If the trial were easy, the gods would not give it to us.
But these words give me only so much comfort when I am in the shoes of the petitioner and not the priest. My dreams are uneasy, when I have the time to sleep, and the activities I undertake when waking sometimes seem little different in tone or content.
I know that this will pass. I know that the gods have seen this conflict, and the quality of my heart and my soul, and they know that I will either rise through this challenge or I will fall, ever fighting. I know this. I have faith.
But it is not easy, when the darkness presses close on all sides.
Please note that the scholars may take some time preparing your journal for others to read.
