Does that mean that elves do not get enough dairy? Should we send cheese to their new embassy?

Relationship Note on Fergus

Well he still stays firmly in his place on the list of people I have never bested in a fight. I am proud to know I made him work for it this time though. That is not something I could always claim.

He makes Marian smile too. And I am not talking her 'bless your heart, Edain, at least you are trying' smile. I am talking the genuine bright, vibrant smile that I've only seen one other person able to bring out of her.

Sometimes a foul mouth and trying your hardest to push everyone and everything away cannot hide a good heart.

I know little of Noodling, Shinwack or oiled up bear grappling, but I do feel as if the virtues of cornholing cannot be overstated. It is an activity anyone can enjoy.

Now sometimes yes someone will get a little excited and thier bag will burst and stuff gets everywhere but in the hole, but that is usually a mistake that the inexperienced make. Truly great cornholers rely on finesse, timing and patience to finish in dramatic fashion.

Relationship Note on Victus

When catching up on new journal entries I stumbled across one written by High Lord Victus where he lamented missing out on a noodling competition. I found this to be not only a silly name but one that might also have a tawdry meaning, so curiosity got the better of me and I had to find out what "noodling" was.

Well I had to ask just about every scribe working but I eventually found one the directed me to a very informative book. It turns out that 'noodling' is a method of catching fish that involves diving under the water, sticking your hand down the fishes burrow so it tries to swallow your arm whole, and then pulling them up out of the water. This sounds to me a both crazy and dangerous way to catch a fish!

I am certainly glad that in the Oathlands we don't have any such pass times with silly and suggestive names. In fact I am going to go back to the Manor and round up everyone for a nice vigorous game of cornhole!

I think there is a certain strength in recognizing your limits. Mine is diplomacy, I think this is battle I will need to leave to other's and just be ready to offer my aid however I can when called.

The Mother Mercy, my cousin, Princess Sophie spoke in my court today of the plight of those inflicted with Soldier's Heart. Those that have been through horrible experiences of war, or really any terrifying stressful situation. I know many suffer of this, and even though it is not something we have always had a name for. We just finished a war where many had to face things they did not believe could be real and were not ready to face. Hell it was a war that I don't think we could have been ready to face.

Let us not forget that wounds run deep and remember kindness for our friends and families, and even strangers. I know it is something that I have not always been as good at as I should be. And I will strive to do better.

So I have taken upon me the task of training a new squire.

Squire Serid Iron Foot. He is adjusting to his new life well. He shows great talent at hitting things with sticks, and he's a born survivor.

However he keeps trying to get away from me so he can hunt the Greenmarch War Elks. He tells me 'I'll thank him come winter.' We're still working on setting boundaries.

I read some comments earlier today about the concerns for the merriment made at the Auction, and whether it is appropriate. I understand Prince Mason's feelings. In the Oathlands we are not known for our humor, and I am someone that used to find few things funny. But eventually I learned something.

Laughter is an amazingly powerful thing. And sometimes being able to make the most uncomfortable and horrible parts of life into the butt of a joke can give you the strength to move past your grief or your shock.

After the Tragedy of Sanctum a band of performers came to Sanctum and asked to perform for the Royal family, as a tribute to the Tragedy. I was aghast at the idea, but wanting to keep with the spirit of Oathland hospitality I granted their request to perform. They put on a play that was called 'The Troll's Tears' and in it a very short man portrayed Duke Arn Telmar, the Troll of Telmarch at the Tragedy of Sanctum, running around like a child throwing a tantrum, comically killing all the invaders that had the temerity to call him short.

At first everyone in the audience was silent and aghast at the offensive audacity. But by all the gods that little performer that was depicting Duke Arn rather than draw the performance to a close he double downed on his antics. He was so exaggerated and yet so spot on that that eventually, even though we tried to be angry, we couldn't stop ourselves from a few titters, and then a louder chuckle, which became a guffaw, and finally gave birth to cacophonous laughter from us all. It was crude, it was in poor taste, it was offensive, and yet that deep, inappropriate crass laughter was exactly what we needed.

I certainly understand why some might have found the charity auction offensive, but I also think that sometimes a little laughter at the things we find offensive can be a great catharsis that we all need once in awhile.

Sanctum. Home.

I have not returned home in a very long time. It is still the city that I love. Yet everywhere I look I see things that remind me of that night.

Then Guard-Captain Morgan found me and scolded me for almost 2 hours straight about my guard detail and not having enough of them and rarely taking them with me. I swear there is no one in all of Arvum with a more powerful, 'I am not upset, I am just disappointed' tone than that man.

It was strangely... very comforting.

Relationship Note on Alis

In Sanctum in the great cathedral, the birthplace of the Faith, and the home of people, and before the eyes of the Seraph of Sanctum, my sister was wed. My tactical-sized, rowdy, tomboy of a tormentor, stood there in brilliant white and she was the most lovely woman in all the Oathlands. We were both very young when our mother died, my own memories of her have been fading for a time now, and Alis was only an infant and has none.

But standing there in that hall, I thought of how my tactical-sized sister has become my most trusted general. I thought of how she has lead knights and warriors to bring a monster to heel, how she has begun to reform our light cavalry into a versatile company that can strike across terrains our heavy riders could not even dare attempt. She has stood her ground against Bringer's of Silence, she has shown her prodigy and continues to prove she is one the best tacticians in all of Arvum.

At first I thought maybe I saw my mother in her that day, but as she stood there, so proud, trying so hard (and not entirely succeeding) to maintain sober decorum as a smile kept creeping into her features. That day I realized that Princess Alis Valardin, Champion of the West is not merely carrying on our mother's legacy. She is forging her own entirely.

Relationship Note on Fiachra

When I announced that Prince Fiachra would be the Warden of the West he asked if I was getting back at him for the time he said something that made me spit my tea. Nothing could be further from the truth.

My new brother-in-law is a man who walks with a foot in two different worlds. Both culturally and spiritually. He understands that there is a great importance in understanding, and seeing things from both sides. The job I am asking of him is one that will require making constant judgement calls and often finding himself in a position where there is no best decision, only less bad ones. I think the very man that he is will give him the patience, perspective and wisdom to discharge the office of the Warden of the West with not just honor and justice, but compassion. He will need all three in equal measure, and I have faith he will serve the Oathlands with distinction.

Also it is, maybe just a little bit to get back at him for the time he made me spit my tea.

There are so many who's bravery throughout this war I wish to talk about. And I will when I have been able to think back and meditate and express myself more succinctly and eloquently.

But there was thing that I remember vividly of the battle on the western ramparts last night. Towards the end of the fighting, I lead a small group to push a formorian from the walls and send it tumbling to the ground below. Among those those a young footman who I had shielded earlier in the fight. As the monstrous abomination went tumbling over the side he defiantly yelled, and I quote:

"DIE YOU MIME FUCKING TWAT BISCUIT!"

Then he just looked at me and smiled very widely.

He was very proud that he thought to say that in the heat of combat.

Someday I will figure out this cussing thing. The other day I heard someone insult another by calling them a "mime fucker."

Now I am very confused as to the nature of this curse. Is it that a mime themselves are objectionable? Or is the act of copulating with someone whose chosen profession is to entertain that we are to find objectionable? I honestly find niether to be traits worthy of cursing someone over.

Perhaps it would by wise to collect all the curses I have heard that confuse me and compile them into a list so I can find someone to explain them to me.

And on a personal note I am happy for this man and his mime lover that they have a healthy, physical relationship.

Amidst all the fear of infiltrators and the looming battle I found a moment to enjoy a cider and fresh bread with a friend. It was a moment of calm that reminds me of the the little joys in life.

The little joys that are worth fighting for.

The little joys that are worth dying to protect.

Fuck Oblivion! I'm going to keep enjoying dark cider and fresh baked bread!

Relationship Note on Margot

I could talk at length about the brutality of the Thrax, and I feel safe in saying my feelings about them are well documented. To some extent I feel great shame that when I heard of Prince Abbas' slaughter my first reaction was a sigh of resignation and regret rather than outrage, because this is what I expect of the Thrax. But then I heard the story of Duchess Margot Tyde's victory.

She won a bloodless victory and in doing so stole forces and weapons from the Gyre and added them to her own. She showed that wit, diplomacy and guile can be more powerful than the sharpest sword. She did not just make the re-surging House Tyde stronger, but she made the Compact stronger. We are in the fight of our lives, and we are going to all be changed by what we go through in the coming days. And while we fight for our lives, we are going to do things we are not always going to be proud of.

Duchess Margot Tyde did something we can all feel a swell of pride from, and she showed us that no matter the darkness, there can be a better way. Changing is coming to Mourning Isles, and her rulers can either adapt or be swept away by the tide.
