Relationship Note on Norwood

I've come to realize that I live a life where my family and close friends won't allow me to move things around in my own home without locking them up!

To clarify, I did not suggest truly funny people were incompetent. The journals do seem touchy this week.

I'd take a handful of competent and allegedly "humorless" Keatons versus an entire duchy of people who think they're comedic geniuses.

I'm beginning to realize that my optimism in people is often misplaced.

Despite the black cloud that hangs over my house at the moment, I'm happy that the beekeeping demonstration went off without a hitch. I suspect that people were expecting Sir Norwood and myself to be covered with bees and die of the stings. But we proved them wrong!

A little known fact, Sir Norwood kept many bees himself before he became a knight of House Laurent. He's had quite the storied career. I encourage people to ask him about it.

I wrote a proclamation earlier today after I learned of the brutal murder of Marquis-Consort Jacque Lyonesse, requesting information if there were any who had it. In my haste, I did not convey my rage or grief at his passing. I would like to do that here in my white journal now. House Lyonesse is a vassal of House Laurent. We have known the family for countless years, I grew up with the children of that house as my son will grow up with the children of their house. Bounded together by our love for the Oathlands and our dedication to the Faith and lieges in house Valardin.

I also did not adequately express my rage at the guards that were cut down within the ward, the ones that protect those of us here on a daily basis. And I did not speak on how furious it made me to learn that a number of Iron Guard were murdered as well, taken from this life when they were doing what must have seemed a most ordinary patrol when they started out their night.

I am angry and we will seek justice.

We held our auction tonight and I'm very glad to say that the numbers we raised put us over our goal. It's a great relief that I can get the funds rolling out to the families earlier than anticipated. The silver doesn't replace a single life lost but it hopefully provides some level of physical comfort and security so that other healing can begin.

I was pleased to see family and friends all intermingling and chatting. I won't say that I'm the best host in this city, but I think that I'm fair at it, people at least don't go sprinting from the room in horror at my bad jokes. However Sir Norwood DID cause me to spill wine on my doublet. The scoundrel.

The fight is over, for now. The blood has been shed.

But in that, there are stories. Might we write of those instead? I'd like to hear tales of our newest heroes.

We found out late that the threat we thought we'd be facing was one that would be turning its full attention onto Setarco. Quickly and with as much ingenuity as we could muster, we moved the people we had there. It was then that I faced the forces of the Abyss, leading the charge of the Valardin cavalry with trusted allies by my side.

We crashed into monsters that I never imagined I would see with my own eyes. The bloodrush has muddied my memories, I'm afraid. I saw dogs that stood as tall as men and with horrific teeth and snarling faces. I remember the impact of my sword, I remember the gnashing of their teeth. And finally I remember with perfect clarity the moment that one of them managed to unhorse me, sending me through the air and onto the ground. The bite of metal into my skin and the pain as I was hit by hooves and large clawed feet. If it weren't for the quick work of the rest of the cavalry and the precision of the archers, I would have met my end there on the ground. A crumpled heap, chewed and trampled.

Instead, I was able to muster enough strength to pull myself to my feet. Through the haze of pain, I saw the Sword of Artshall charging at me on his horse with his hand extended.

Let it be known here in the whites, that Sir Norwood Clement is the finest knight in the entirety of the Oathlands and perhaps in the whole of the Compact. He is exactly what I hope my son learns to be. True and brave and incredibly skilled with both the sword and horse.

It's with regret that I must say that I unhorsed him and we both fell onto the ground. I don't know what became of his mount, hopefully it had enough sense to run away. I haven't thought to ask him. So instead of riding off with great speed to the mercies and healers, we walked a painful path back through the battlefield. But we were again, covered and protected by numerous allies. It was a feat we wouldn't have managed alone, I wish that I could remember all of their names. Thank you.

I was ushered from the field by Lady Ianna Greenmarch and tended to afterwards by Lady Victoria Kennex. There is absolutely no way I would have survived my injuries without them. It's with their intelligence and skill that I am at home convalescing and writing missives, sending copies of my whites to the archives, rather than being planted in a hole somewhere.

So thank you again. To each and every person that is responsible for my continued existence in this life. You are all some of the most brilliant heroes that I've had the chance to stand with and you will always have a seat at my table.

A letter from my mother arrived from Artshall. I'd like to share a snippet of it, for the ages:

"Why Eadric? Don't you think Eadrick with a 'K' would have been nicer? Surely you can update the scrollwork and get that fixed?"

Relationship Note on Corban

I reached out recently to see if there was anyone interested in cross training their soldiers with my own. I'm glad to say that I heard almost immediately from Lord Corban Telmar. It's been fascinating to watch some of the drills, seeing how each group learns from each other and takes something away new. And I hope that it strengthens the bonds between the Laurent soldiers and those of the Telmarch. We're going to need that kind of unity in the days to come.

Relationship Note on Preston

I find myself humbled by Legate Orazio's journal from earlier today. I'm grown enough to admit that when I read Sir Preston's whites, my own ego was struck. I found myself offended on not only the behalf of the people who call the Oathlands home with me, but myself. My own insecurities and faults. For that I am completely guilty.

I then went out of my way, to engage in a discourse in which I wasn't fully listening to the concerns that came from a young man of the Faith. One that has already accomplished much in his time as a Godsworn and is more than allowed to have worries of his own.

My behavior was the very sort that I would disapprove of in others. To Sir Preston, I owe you a most contrite apology and I intend to make the fullest of amends to yourself and the Faith Militant as a whole.

It's not my Faith in the Pantheon or the Faith of the Oathlanders that you're making me question, Sir Preston. It's you.

Relationship Note on Preston

Yet when you claim that it is multiple members of the nobility within a region, you create a situation in which people will think you're pointing them out specifically. And while you claim this is only because you're so "surprised", I can't help but feel you're attempting to cover your tracks. If you don't wish to create this kind of discourse in the Whites, I'd suggest you not dip your toe into those kinds of waters.

I'm curious, Sir Preston, which Oathlands lords (in the plural) you speak of that are indifferent to the Faith?

I heard there was some unpleasantness at the end of the big free for all at the training grounds. I didn't notice it myself, I was having a spectacular time teaming up with Sir Norwood. I found myself wishing Count Kael was there. Next time! All the combatants were skilled opponents.

And Lady Margerie was kind enough to help me up after several poor attempts to wrestle Sir Norwood to the ground. It's good to have friends!

It's been a wildly busy week for social engagements. Now Jael is back home as well. I knew that I missed her while she was away, but not nearly how much until she was finally in the house again. Between Nicia and my sisters, my cousins and even Sir Norwood, the place feels full and alive. I remain incredibly touched by how lucky I am to have my family be the people that they are.

I didn't say what that being sad was going to result in. It might very well end up sad for all parties involved!
