I'm starting to think my nautical metaphors need work. Such a disgraceful display.

<enclosed with the entry is a Graphite sketch>
*Drawn in graphite on sketch paper, the sketch shows a woman with wide and eager eyes, joyful and exuberant as her lips quirk in a soft smile. The blonde hair frames her face as it dances wildly around her shoulders, a single strand of black seemingly mingling with the blonde. She rests her chin upon her fingers, supporting herself on the back of her hand, and through that joyful expression is just a hint of mischief and zeal.*

I cannot. I likely will, when it's easier. But, I had to throw on my cloak and find my slippers - and run, run to record this into the Journal before it fades and I forget and it turns to nothing but the stuff of dreams and sketchbooks.
She's holding on, our brave and beautiful goddess of the water and the air - but. But not forever. Her hold is fragile, like a bubble. Like a bubble it will also pop. It's been slowed, but...
It, so beautiful and horrible. Is still coming.

What do you do when you ARE a member of a House that has the rest of the Compact's focus?
When you are forced to study an image that reminds you that your culture prizes coin over human life. Reminding you that human beings who can be bought and sold as commodities like cattle, forced to work as they pay off their debts. No, it's not the same as the slave auctions of Eurus, but the demand that slavery in _all_ of its forms must come to an end.
That we, as Thrax, that have grown serious about living our lives and honoring the gods as we have - we should, we need be striving to make that happen today. It's going to take such a long time, but we need to begin somewhere. We devalue and humiliate the guilty. We need to find different ways of judgement and punishment. We need to eradicate the discriminatory injustice. We need to protect, respect, and educate the freed outright. We need to reform the system. We need to tear it down to the foundations and rebuild it in such a way that regulates it and moderates it. We are set apart from the rest of the Compact by Thralldom, and, we have been shown that in order to be successful against our enemies we need to be unified.
Does this mean conforming? To a degree, yes. We are long past time. We have moved beyond that dark chapter of our history, and long past time for all believers to take more of a stand. Because on this issue we can unquestionably stand together.
Only through challenge will we grow.

( Done in graphite and overlaid with ink, with specific and hyper-realistic attention to the details of the textures. A black coat folded precisely and set aside on a wooden bench. A polished cane set on top of the folded coat. A flask, dull in comparison to the shine on the cane, has a design of a serpent upon it. The still life drawing seems to be a frozen moment of waiting or watching. )

A fair face, head tipped back, long and unpinned hair caught in an indecisive color - neither gold nor silver. A vexing color in between that the paint cannot quite capture, although effort has been made to. Across bare shoulders with skin white as marble, and that hair falls down her back, as a mantle. She's smiling, and the vivaciousness in that expression is reflected in every other feature. Summer sky blue eyes are playful, devious. )

The profile of a man: all jet and midnight.
Staring into the eyes of a similar man. All raven and sapphire. Although there is no emotion in those beautiful eyes.
Behind the storm clouds there are birds, poorly detailed seabirds, that fill the horizon line to the top of the pages.
So many birds. )

( The Sword of Escuma. One of the Voices of Navegant. Her profile rendered with quill and ink. The beauty of fierceness. The portrait honors a woman that uses her strength to the good of herself, her family, her House. Her features are delicate, yes, but there is an element of determination in her expression that holds her place where others would flee. It's a brilliant wildness in the eyes, the wind-blown hair around her brow and shoulders. )
