Relationship Note on Margot

At the behest of Princess Fatima, I'd gone with Duchess Margot Tyde to protect her while she went on a diplomatic mission. It was thankfully a task wherein my talents where not overly needed. I stood with Sir Tarrant Moore, and the Duchess spoke convincingly enough to gather us allies.

One man did not join us, having sworn himself beyond death to the Gyre. A young man chastised us for letting him have his way - drowning himself. Saying that now he'd belong to the Deeps forever.

I suppose I will know, if I am to serve as executioner, not to do such a thing again.

Worked on some redsteel for Baron Stormbreak. I enjoy the challenge of the metal - it's trickier to work with than regular steel, but also a wonderful alloy once you get the impurities out.

Patience is a virtue in the forge as well as on the battlefield - be ready for the perfect moment - when the steel hits just the right temperature, or your foe makes a mistake.

I have been impatient. Thankfully, I have friends and more who remind me of the virtue of patience.

So. Thank you. You know who you are.

Relationship Note on Aksel

The Sword of Stonedeep continues to be a man of amiable company, through both light-hearted and serious conversations. I am glad for what he has shared of his personal history, and happy to have been able to aid him (I think? I hope?).

I'm glad to call him friend.

More skillful writers than I have spoken of the Grayson Expeditions and the troubles - and rewards - garnered there.

I think it served a noble purpose. I pray that the lives lost were not lost in vain, and I will do what I can to ensure that they are not. Abandoned have become Prodigal, and maps have been written. Knowledge have been gathered, and friends have been made.

The Dragon's Daughter was blooded, there. And I pray that the Queen of Endings take that soul into her embrace, and readies him for his next life.

She has been finished. She was finished a while back, but with the Grayson expedition my time to actually deliver journal entires to the Archives has been limited.

Mistress Hana Grayhope was kind enough to aid me - well. She did the bulk of the work, really. I'm more armoursmith than weaponsmith.

But we finished her. An homage to Wyrmstooth, the grand red dame of Wyrmguard. The Dragon's Daughter, who I hope may someday gain a pedigree as illustrous as the one she borrows her likeness from. A sword in alaricite, to stand next to Wyrmstooth.

I am blessed and honoured. And grateful to my House and my friend.

Relationship Note on Vesper

Lady Vesper Nighthawk blends the South and the North in a way that's refreshing - interesting. She's good company. And I always do feel more at ease in the company of fellow Swords. I always want to listen, learn, hear their perspective on our duties.

I look forward to going riding. And to showing her the Gauntlet.

And to seeing what she has in mind.

The Cairn Valardin Carnival has been an experience! Not only did I get to meet the brand new Princess Ellara Valardin (can't wait to babysit!), but I also got to partake in a hair-styling contest, and. Well. I think I owe master Aksel booze and an apology. I tried for a Kraken, but it became closer to a storm-draggled tree in the water.

The Snowball fight was interesting, as I somehow found myself wagering with master Aksel, and I let Lady Desiree dictate the terms of it. Which I think may have been subconsciously trying to let him get one back at me.

Which means I'm now awaiting a surprise gift as, well. Honestly, the King's team was the safe bet.

I didn't see the kiss coming, though.

It's been an exceedingly productive week for me, which is good. And I look forward to truly getting back into the swing of things, so to speak. I'm also excited about upcoming projects, though... Well. I'll save that matter for when it is done.

I only hope Prince Calarian is pleased with his armour, despite it being a rush job.

A week of revelations. I always prided myself on living my life openly, and on not having use for the black journals. My confessions were told in plain view. I can acknowledge when I mess up. I hold no deep secrets in my heart.

But to serve Vellichor is to ensure that knowledge remains when you are gone, and so, here I am, looking at the chamber of confessions, where the scribes bring people to record their innermost thoughts.

Part of growth is realising one's mistakes, and rectifying them. I have been arrogant. Not all things I would record is for all men and women to see.

I spoke to Mistress Hana Grayhope, and we discussed, among other things, smithing techniques. She was kind enough to show me a treatise on the various metals, and I have reached a new understanding about diamondplate, I think.

It's very gratifying to speak to a fellow smith - someone who understands the coaxing of the metals. Sometimes, it is not you who shapes the metal, so much as the metal that tells you what it wishes to be.

Maybe not literally. But, yes. Sometimes there's little use going against the flow.

I can only hope it won't be an issue when I work comissions.

A few days ago, I agreed to spar with Mistress Paladin Leola Allenatore's horse. I didn't realise she'd be seated upon Dame Brier, nor that her arrows - blunted for the training pitch they may be - would be quite as hard to dodge.

The two are formidable together. Though Mistress Leola was pleased I was able to bring Dame Brier to her knees.

How do you make friends with a horse after sparring? Do I find some good oats and share stories of other knights that have bested me?

I find myself ever grateful to live in a world as wondrous as this. To hear about the many gifts bestowed by the gods, old and new. To learn of my fellow people and the way of things. I admit, it sometimes seems like every new answer brings a number of questions, but... Well. Perhaps that is Vellichor's charge for us. To ever keep searching. Ever keep learning?

I am no scholar. But I can appreciate seeing a mystery unravel, just a little.

The stories that have come from the harbours seem almost unreal. And yet...

And yet, they are. And so are the consequences they bring.

My prayers go to the people of the Mourning Isles, who have lost friends or kin.

I will aid in the efforts that go out to assist those affected.

I lack the words to express my sympathy and grief. But I will stand with you.

Relationship Note on Monique

Note to self: If a noble asks you not to hold back...

...Hold back. A t least a little. Trust your instincts and continue getting the measure.

Lady Monique, you have my apologies and I will of course ensure that my arms aim to protect you outside of the sparring ring.

My body still aches, and having read other journals, I am offering my thanks to Lagoma, and to her Mercies, among them Princess Sophie Valardin, Mother of Mercy of Arx. To Softest Whisper Saedrus. To Knight of Solace Thena Grayhope. To Countess Reigna Keaton, and, I am, sure, others I've missed - I beg forgiveness as I was for the longest time struggling to actually be awake and aware when I was being treated.

Ours was a most glorious melee, but it would have been less so if not for the tireless efforts of those who stood at the ready to care for us.

The Grand Melee is tonight, and two winners will be declared - the most stylish and accomplished fighter, and the last person standing.

I don't expect to win either of them, frankly. The line-up is intimidating. But I intend to fight my best for Valardin, for Wyrmguard, for Gloria and for Limerance.

While I did manage to place for the finals in the Jousting Tournament, I'm afraid that my focus on being on my feet came back to haunt me - I beat my opponent in the first bracket, and then was promptly unhorsed.

Thankfully, I was unhorsed by Sir Tristran Crucible, who went on to win the whole thing, so I can't feel -too- bad about losing.

I saw a lot of impressive bouts today. I am sure Gloria smiled on us all, and Limerance found joy in the many bonds of favour exchanged.

Met and spoke with Lord Corban - oversaw his attempt at the Gauntlet. He finished, which is good. A good score for a first (or second) go.

He did, however, apparently bring me luck. When I went a little later I set a new personal record - 151 marks. I could tell Duke Arn was impressed, because he didn't chastise me for a poor score.

I don't know what Lycene woman started the apparent tradition of Lycene women running the Gauntlet in dresses (and heels?), but they have my respect. I may have to try at some point. When I need the extra challenge.

I frequently find the Gauntlet challenging enough on its own.
