Relationship Note on Korka

I am pleased that Korka Glynn has returned from the Telmarch once more to Arx. When she left, we were liege and house retainer. When she returned, we are peers.

I cannot say if that is what led to her getting me more than a few drinks at the Telmar Tower and at the Ambassador. But whatever the reason, it was a good celebration with a good friend. And I am thankful for it.

Another year passes, and I am 26. It has been a year filled with change, to say the least. But I am glad of where I have now made my home, regardless of the rocky path that has led me there.

I am thankful to my friends, my brothers and sisters in arms, and my Telmar family that have sustained me this past year.

I have no doubt that year 26 will be even more eventful than the 25 that came before.

Relationship Note on Etienne

How good it is to welcome my brother, no longer Brother, but Blessed, Etienne to the Capital as he assumes his duties as the archlector of Gild.

All three of Lucas Telmar's boys, Corban, Tovell, and Etienne, now serve the Crown directly in our own way.

I hope he would be proud of us.

Relationship Note on Thena

The Hundred of the King's Own send their deepest condolences to the Knights of Solace lost in service to Duke Cassius.

We are united as the Silver Orders, and I will provide what aid I can to my brothers and sisters in service.

Relationship Note on Felicia

I have been a member of the Hundred for less than a month now. But even as the newest member of the Silver Swords, I was deeply touched by the memorial statute to the fallen King's Own that Dame Felicia unveiled last night. It is serves as a stark reminder of all those who have sacrificed in service to the King and Compact. It is also a reminder that we sworn knights to the Crown are but a link in a long chain of history that began long before us and will continue long after we are gone.

In addition, I now have a handsome first place trophy commemorating my success in the jousting competition held after the unveiling. The King almost bested me, but I prevailed by the narrowest of margins. It is perhaps unsporting to best His Royal Highness, but the King applauded my success nonetheless.

Relationship Note on Tovell

It was bad enough I had to grow up with him, but now I have to /work/ with my brother. (I kid, dear reader, I kid.)

Although we live only doors away from each other, our schedules have kept me from seeing Tovell until just last night when he joined us for dinner in the barracks. It was a particularly hard blow that he was unable to attend my swearing in to the King's Own, but he drew the short straw (literally!) and was assigned to guard the Queen and her twins during the ceremony.

But like all close family, we talked and joked as if there had been no break in being apart. Except for the difficulty that "Sir Telmar" does not adequately name who you are thinking of in the King's Own, I am certain that we will be an excellent team in service to the Crown.

It is hard to believe it has been only a fortnight since I joined the King's Own. It feels as if it has been a month or more. It has been a whirlwind reading up on the new patrol manual and learning the details of how to guard a fixed post (such as the clocktower and the Palace) and how to defend a moving subject (such as the King.)

Speaking of which. I had my first assignment to the King as a leader of his detail, shadowing Dame Felicia. We escorted the King to the Keaton Hall celebration, which was as wonderful as always. On my break, I was able to partake of Chef Marie's delightful foods and the goat races were delightful for all involved, including Dame Felicia, who secured a goat that, I am told, she is keeping at the royal stables. All the better, since I don't want it rooting around my things at the Tower.

I am now no longer Lord Corban Telmar. Duke Arn has released me from my oaths to the Telmarch and House Telmar, and the King and Lord Commander have accepted my oaths to the Crown and the King's Own, respectively. I am therefore now and henceforth Sir Corban Telmar, a Knight of the King's Own, the famed Silver Swords.

I record below the oaths that I took before the Monarch, the Lord Commander, and my brothers and sisters. I only wish my brother could have been there. But the Queen and her twins require protection, and I rest easier knowing he was among those keeping them safe.

* * *

"Your Majesty, I swear myself to your service. As I served the Telmarch, I will serve you. I will give all that I have -- all of my skill, all of my ability, all of my strength, and, if necessary, my life -- for you and for yours. In all ways, I will represent the Crown and the Compact, and dedicate myself to its protection against its enemies, foreign and domestic."

"Lord Commander, my Sisters and Brothers, I dedicate myself to be one of the Hundred. We are few, but we are strong. I will drill with you, fight with you, bleed with you, and die with you if duty commands it. I will always act in a worthy of the Silver Swords we hold and the Silver Order we represent. I will rejoice with you in victory and accept your correction in failure."

"I swear this: While we stand, the Crown will not fall."

Relationship Note on Simone

I have had the tremendous pleasure to share the company of my cousin the marquessa several times over these last few days. To be sure, she may not quite remember one of them other than a hazy dream, she had enough drink. But the intimacy of family, the ability to speak freely and unguardedly is a unique pleasure in the world, especially the world of nobility.

I am heartened that although we may find ourselves with different oaths and last names, the Telmar family remains as strong as never.

Relationship Note on Monique

I thank Lady Monique for her kind words. I, too, wish her nothing but success in her future journeys. But she does not need my wishes; she will do just fine on her own.

The Telmarch and Greemarch remain as close as ever, united in a solitary desire for strength and prosperity.

Relationship Note on Calaudrin

I confess: As a voice of a ducal house, I am not one much to travel to the Lower Boroughs.

But for my friends in House Riven (and at the prodding of my wife, Monique), I made the journey. The Riven Brandy that Guardsman Calaudrin prepared was quite something. A strong proof and with the taste of fresh pears picked straight from the trees, I would say that it is a true gem among the liquors that are found in the Crownlands.

As I feared, my coin purse was lifted during the event. And yet it was returned by the end.

Hm.

Relationship Note on Margret

I am so pleaded to hear that my cousin-in-law, Margret, will take the reins as a Voice of Greenmarch. She has been doing fantastic work in the Physician's Guild, and will help lead the Greenwood with distinction.

Congratulations, too, to my wife, Lady Monique, on her service to her home. The Greenwood is better off for her guidance. I know she will serve with equal distinction as Telmar's Minister of Coin.

Relationship Note on Eirlys

We gathered at the Gauntlet last night, House Telmar and House Greenmarch, to honor the life of the departed Sword of the Greenwood, Lady Eirlys Greenmarch.

Between the sparring bouts in the dueling ring and the heats running the Gauntlet (I logged a personal best), I think Lady Eirlys would have been pleased. I hope her soul smiled on our efforts.

I am absolutely delighted that my pamphlet, "Ten Principles of War" has been placed on display and is available for reading at the Gilded Page. Lady Monique's staff of scribes have done a wonderful job copying my text in an aesthetically pleasing manner.

Most of all, I hope those that read learn something that they may apply in their own lives and campaigns. I know I did in writing it.

Relationship Note on Edain

I was delighted to hear of the Dayne Valardin Academy from the High Lord of the Oathlands.

It is impossible to sum up what the great Lord Commander means to me. I look forward to giving the Academy established in his name what aid and assistance that I can.

Relationship Note on Reigna

It was lovely to visit with the Countess Keaton the other day. There are few families as welcoming to friends as the Keatons are, and Countess Reigna's steadfast support of her husband's rule is a credit to Oakhaven, to their Marquessa, Duke Laurent, and all of the Oathlands.

Relationship Note on Dominique

More than the Telmar Tower has new activity. Of our vassals, too, others return to the City. The latest of them is Marquessa Dominique Wyrmguard, the ruler of our loyal friends in Blancibier. Her people were lucky to have her home, but I am glad to have her back in the Capital.

Relationship Note on Tesha

How wonderful it is to have my cousin Tesha returned to the Capital. Of course, she has been invaluable in the Telmarch, helping manage our finances and affairs there. But her presence in the Tower adds even more life to it. The bustle of a present family warms my heart, and so does the fast connection that Tesha is making with my wife, Monique.

Welcome back, Tesha. The Telmars of Arx are glad you are here.

Letters. So many letters.

It is a solemn obligation of a military commander to express the his, the Duke's, and the entire Telmarch's appreciation for a fallen soldier's service to her family and loved one. But as the Telmarch lost half of all forces committed at Setarco, land and sea, the deluge of notes to draft and write is overwhelming.

Some of the brave men and women I knew directly, from either my time as a company commander in the Telmarch or from fighting by their side in Setarco. For others, I must rely on second-hand stories from officers and comrades. But yet Captain Reedy and I work on a letter for each. It is our solemn obligation: As leaders of soldiers, as leaders of the Telmarch.

Relationship Note on Cristoph

Duke Cristoph has suggested that we tell stories of the heroes of Setarco. I think that is a fine idea. So let me tell the story of Duke Cristoph Laurent and the cavalry of the Oathlands.

It is hard to overstate the danger of the rabid dogs that the Pirate King's minions unleashed on the lines in Setarco. They are the creatures that murdered both Dame Zhayla, the Sword of Old Oak, and Lord Killian Ashford, the Paladin of Ideals. They, in other words, defeated some of our finest warriors. Any rational soldier would cower and refuse to face them.

But not Duke Cristoph and his brave men and women. They steeled themselves, they charged. Their losses were unspeakable. But they were victorious. I commanded men on that line. We owe our lives to them.

It is said that the purest form of Gloria's worship is to pray not for victory, but for the courage to do one's duty. The Duke Cristoph's cavalry venerated Gloria in their deeds at Setarco.
