Relationship Note on Preston

As one of these 'faithless Oathlanders' you've been talking about, Rivenshari makes no bones on the fact that the majority of us do not ascribe the Arx's Faith. We have, as we always have, followed the Wind and River.

And while I respect the members of the Arx faith, hold no ill words to them and hope that whatever belief they believe brings them comfort, at the same time, we don't hide the fact of what we are. And as one of Rivenshari's Shamans, I would never tell anyone in my clan to be ashamed of what they believe, no matter who it comes from.

Marian makes a good point. Unity, despite faith, despite many things, is what will lead to survival. This is a lesson we have learned. Because the Rivenshari should be viewed as a warning and an inspiration to the rest of the Compact. We were alone. The things Brand did our clan I will not speak of here, but enough of you are aware of it. But we all remember, there is not a day that goes by that any of us in the clan don't think about it. What happened to us could happen to any clan, to any house. But we survived, and we still stand. Through family, through faith, through will. And through unity, strength.

To make someone change, to force them to be something else, even if it's something like faith, like you're so suggesting, to make people be less of 'faithless Oathlanders', you're suggesting the very ideas, the very things we're fighting against. The loss of freedom, the loss of knowledge, the loss of choice. It should not matter what anyone else believes in. You look at these 'faithless Oathlanders', and it almost sounds like you view them as less. When oddly enough it is your close-mindedness that makes you less.

These are enemies that want to strip us of our mind, our freedom, our lives. These enemies do not care who you pray to. What religion you practice. What house or family you belong to. This enemy will strip us of who we are. Bare and down to nothing. I know. The Rivenshari know. We have suffered it once already. Almost two years ago, we threw ourselves mindlessly at your walls. I was one of them. So if it doesn't matter to them, why the hell does it matter to you.

And that is why we apart of this Compact. Unity. We were alone once, and it almost cost us everything we were. Now we know more, and we can impart what we know so that maybe, just maybe, it doesn't happen to anyone else. I may not trust the Compact yet, but I do respect it. And that for me, is enough. So whether I worship the Wind and River, which some would say is one side of a coin with the Arvani gods on the other, it shouldn't matter to you or to anyone else whatever someone puts their faith in.

You answer to a fifth, the Crown. While I am sure that your grandmaster, the Blessed Cassandra, His Most Holy and his voices, and the Gods appreciate your devotion, you at the end of the day are a citizen of the Compact. We all are. As others have eloquently pointed out His Majesty rules over not just the Faithful but people of other beliefs and customs. Unity does not mean a loss of identity. It means solidarity. I think we can all agree that there is a common foe for all, regardless of your religious beliefs, that needs to be dealt with. An enemy that is a threat to the /Crown/ and Compact. An enemy that His Most Holy and his voices wisely saw the need to get involved in.

I, too, am troubled by Sir Preston's vague impugning of the faithfulness of the Oathlands nobility. Those I know of are god-fearing men and women and even those who follow other ways have a healthy respect for the Faith and Faith militant.

We welcome the Templars' swords, honor the gods, and do our duty.

To sow division upon the white pages is most disheartening when we need unity so very much right now.

It's not my Faith in the Pantheon or the Faith of the Oathlanders that you're making me question, Sir Preston. It's you.

Yet when you claim that it is multiple members of the nobility within a region, you create a situation in which people will think you're pointing them out specifically. And while you claim this is only because you're so "surprised", I can't help but feel you're attempting to cover your tracks. If you don't wish to create this kind of discourse in the Whites, I'd suggest you not dip your toe into those kinds of waters.

I'm curious, Sir Preston, which Oathlands lords (in the plural) you speak of that are indifferent to the Faith?

Don't worry. Abandoned tribes that stay too close to you can end up conveniently disappearing even when the Templars or local forces aren't called on to officially remove them. Tribes that mistake this kind of thing for kindness tend to end up paying their own prices for it sooner or later, whether it's at the hands of the Faith militant or not.

While there will certainly be tribes that don't join up, I highly doubt the reason will be because they don't see the threat. It's possible, of course, but it's hard to survive long out there in any capacity if you ignore something like the growing strength of a warlord, let alone one as unique and blatantly dangerous as this. And while his danger has been something relatively newly known to the Compact, for reasons largely beyond your control, the Abandoned have been contending with the reality of his growing reach for decades. Not in this area, sure, but stories and rumors spread as fast as refugees. Even those who haven't heard of him will remember Brand's mark; you won't find many, if any, that won't take the matter seriously. The real problem is if they consider the Compact the greater threat to their lives. Convincing them that's not true will be the real task. Proving it's not true might be damn near impossible in the long run. We'll see.

A devout Templar, he serves the will of the Dominus without question. It is that last part, the "without question" that bothers me. In fact he argues that we must not question the Gods or Their representatives, even as he questions Their representatives. Our conversation was by turns interesting and confusing. I hope he works out his faith soon. We all must be the champions of our own faith and our own consciences. I wonder what will happen when those two things clash in him. He seems right on the edge of fanaticism and though I liked him I think he will walk a difficult path in the coming months and years.

Not what I expected in a Templar.

Fit? Yes. Strong? Yes. Handsome? A nice bonus but not a requirement for the job. Dogmatic? As expected. But intelligent. More intelligent than most people give him credit for, I'd guess. I enjoy our talks. As I said, not what I expected from a chance meeting.

I do not blame Sir Preston for his defense of his master. It is, after all, his duty as both a Templar and a follower of the Faith.

But I do pity him what is to come.
