I can be a moron sometimes.

I can get wrapped up in my own narrative sometimes.

Own your shit Max. Then move the fuck on.

I am making my way up river with the slower merchants. The Grey river is as wide and vast as she is long, and my ships move three abreast up river, the stroke of the oars slapping the water as a heartbeat, as much as the rustle of the sails are its breath. The sun set just moments ago, bathing us all in the last fading golden red rays of light, and I could not help but remember our sunsets on the beach.

The land here is good - if overly forested and I see why the Crownlanders so jealously guard it.

All around me are Islanders both Mourning and Saffron, Lycene, Oathlanders and Northmen, all working with the Crownlanders. If we can maintain this unity for the battles to come...

We will be unstoppable.

It's been a hell of a forenight.

Sameera has come to the city. That's its own ball of wax.

I had a hell of a dream. Something about the queen of endings or maybe it was the Knight of Procrastination or something.

Look lively men, its just the end of the world.

i am not a scholar. I am a soldier.

I collect information so I can better understand my enemies, so I can better destroy them.

If you wish the information I have learned, I will share it. But I have sacrificed and I strive to learn this specific information. Be it how to run a war, be it how to sail a ship, be it how to identify a daemon or where the pirate ports in the Saffron are.

If you wish my information, I will share it.

But please, come to me with something to offer. Information of your own is preferable.

Arm me as I arm you.

It's only polite.

And I am so very polite.

I am not a perfect man.

I am a man thrust into a situation he was unready for.

But I am the man who is here. I am the man getting things done.

I may not be the man for the job.

But I am the man with the job.

Get the fuck out of my way, because I never let my crew or captain down.

Women as a viable leadership role in the thrax.

I honestly never thought I would see that day.

Yes. I was in the Battle of Pride Hall.

Yes. I fought.

No. I did not bring down a bringer this time. My role in this battle was not frontline combat.

The military of the Darkwater are rarely frontline combat. We are a raiding force, a scouting force.

We do not wear the heavy armor and we do not sail the heavy ships. Some ships, like my Flag, the Damnation, are bigger and stronger by design, but most of our ships are light and easy, made for fast transit and hitting quick. Our men are the same.

Someone asked me what it was I did, if I wasn't on the front line. I didn't answer him. Not directly. I was not sure I could choke the frustration out of my voice and not end up beating the man senseless.

But here, I will explain what Darkwater did for Greyson and Pridehall. What we did, and continue to do, for the Compact.

My forces are scouts. Fast scouts. Riverine and forest, we know how to move and what we are looking for. Our scouts on the rivers found the camps and marching trails the Shavs were using. We found them early, nearly a week before the Battle of Pridehall. We found them much further west and... much farther past Bastion than expected. This in turn allowed the Ignisari to investigate in force, and as many know, their actions lead to the main battle.

Darkwater Forces did their part, in locating our enemy and denying them the chance to fully flank us, to give our forces the chance to respond and take the aggressive initiative. But songs do not get sung of brave scouts or spies.

When the scouting was done, what did Darkwater do then?

Darkwater did what Darkwater does. This is where Black Mountain came in. Black Mountain moves on Darkwater Ships for the most part. We took action, good action. We had stockpiled goods for the battle and we ran ship after ship after ship after ship of supplies to Pride Hall.

The leather strap that you needed replaced so that your breastplate did not come off? Came on a Darkwater Ship.

The stew in your bowl that kept your belly fed? Came on a Darkwater ship.

The shovel you dug the latrine with to keep your camp from disease? Came on a Darkwater ship.

The food and resources needed to keep a force of 40,000 men supplied, armed, fed and fighting?

They came on Darkwater ships.

Swords win battles. Logistics wins wars.

Darkwater, Black Mountain. We fight for the Compact.

- Maximilian Darkwater.

I saw that Alarie was making a mask for Darrow.

He wanted a mask with a dour frown - I think it was one of those comedy and drama masks.

I saw the order in her store.

I edited the order.

Darrow will look so happy!

We battled in the north woods today. A group of shavs headed by a Bringer and... I'm not sure what. The battle was conclusive, though the Knights of Solace took heavy losses. The Bringer is dead. The undetermined woman is dead.

Darkwater lost men today, but that is the cost of battle. We know the five men who died today died to protect the city, to protect the compact, and in doing so, protect their homes in Darkwater.

Orsin Athol, an Orphan of Tidemarsh.
Kenick Dockside, of Darkwater Watch.
Maris Jormond of Tyde Hall.
Danny the Silent, no known surname, no known home.
Macklan S'Miri, of Darkwater Watch.

These men died today to defend the Greysons. To defend mainlanders. They join a half company of their allies who fell in the battle against the Iron Traitors. I do not like throwing away lives. But a life spent in defense of others, is not wasted.

I look forward to when the Greysons offer ships to defend Darkwater Watch from the threats that come to it.

I have contracted for, and retained the services of the Crimson Blades, building a new chapter house on Darkwater to support them. It will be a good expansion of my power in the Saffron and a damn hard surprise for any shavs trying to hit us.

Which... I admit... I think is a very real possibility.

My new armor is complete.

Master Torian did the base work, and the quality is decent enough. It's a complex set of armor, so I am not displeased.

Mistress Alarie did the finishing work, as well as the cloak. I am confident when I return to the sea, I will present a fearsome visage to the Shavs.

While the rest of the Black Mountain Customs House is still being finished, the main shop is now open. This pleases me greatly. Very greatly indeed.

Damon would have enjoyed seeing it. Nekarris would be trying to buy everything in it, despite my protestations she could simply go in back and take what she liked.

The fleet comes together. Under my banner sail ships from Nilanza, from Southport, From Grimhall and Port Stormward, from Maelstrom and beyond join my effort. We are going to do this.

We can make this work.

I wonder if I can call myself an admiral?
