Relationship Note on Ruslan

Marquis Volkhov,

Thanks to your sister, Aahana, you have at least one convert. I have been feeling more comfortable around them all the time.

To all of the would be heroes and heroines, there are things you should really take into account when going on an adventure:

1. Communication - You need to speak a common language with your group (obvious), but also have a decent selection of languages at hand. Not being able to communicate can fast lead to conflicts that might be avoided.

2. I have said this before, but patience. Sometimes the door you are planning to break down will be opened from the other side on its own., and most importantly..

3. While you might want to be the face that the rescued parties see and recognize as their savior, it doesn't matter how charming you are if these poor souls see you and your weapon covered in blood. At that moment, you look no better than the ones who put them there in the first place.

The closing night of the Tournament of Swords was my first large event of it’s type for me here in Arx. There was some excellent talent on display, from Sir Calaudrin Estedes taking the archery contest in fine fashion to Princess Sorrel Thrax’s display of skill in the joust (I must learn how to ride one of these days and stop just being a foot soldier).

Now…having been a knight and a Champion, I thought myself ready for the melee. I will say it is fortunate that is was mostly a friendly contest (though I do believe Talen and Victus were a little too eager to do harm to one another..and show just how much of a beating they could take. I won’t even go into the unicorn). Just from my experience at that event, I have learned I much prefer the more controlled chaos of a duel to that of this tourney’s free for all style. Not knowing where, or from whom, a blow might come was rather nerve wracking. I held my own for a while and was mostly trading steel with a young lady named Helia. I will have to seek her out as a sparring and practice partner later. Her agility and liquidity kept me from landing all but one shot while she was picking away at me.

In the end, it was Sir Jordan Ober, who took me out of play. I was so engaged with the aforementioned young lady, that I did not see or expect his strike. So deft was his initial (and final, as it were) blow that three healers could not entirely set me to rights and I will have to seek out further care. In some ways, it lessens the shot to the ego to be taken out by the eventual winner…but only a little.

What I have learned is that I am in need of better armor, faster feet and more practice. The first is easy, the second two are about continuing to learn and improve oneself. That is, after all, one of the big reasons I came here. On to the next lesson…

When you are patient and take the time to listen and pay attention, there are many things that you can learn:

Charity and generosity are not always seen as such, depending on how they are given...with humility and no hubris might be best.

While you can observe how someone live, that is not actually living what they do....learn to ask and listen rather than tell or assume.

There is good and evil in people at all levels of the land, from commoner to noble....learn to recognize the difference between evil for necessity and evil for malice. They are not the same evil.

Also, apparently..as a Lycene, I should be obligated to bite when asked politely.....but that one may need further research.

Both though ignorance and a bit of stubbornness, I had completely missed the upcoming masq at the Menagerie, particularly considering my own house is hosting. Fortunately for me, someone was available to help and had a costume that would suit me near to completion. Problem avoided...this time.

Relationship Note on Mirari

Stopping into Works Obscura to have a look at the Blades Garden, who should I run into, but Miriari, herself. When I explained to her that I was simply seeking a high quality steel weapon for the strict purpose of using in duels, she was more than happy to oblige. I provided the steel and she provided the creativity. What was delivered to me was nothing short of a work of art. At first glimpse, I nearly wanted to hang it on a wall and look at it. Then I went through practice motions with the weapon. All I can say is that I cannot wait to use it in a duel.

Caspian Wild has chosen me to represent him in his Challenge against Bliss Whisper. Bliss has chose Sir Jeffeth Bayweather as her Champion for the duel. While all the details are not settled, I had the opportunity to watch a duel between Jeffeth and Aleksei Morgan. The undefeated Jeffeth is as impressive as folks say. He wields that hammer with skill and grace...not easy things to say about a maul. The duel will be a true test of my skills. Looking forward to it.

I was very surprised when my ask for improving myself was answered by Prince Edain Valardin. He also asked if I was up to serving as his Champion for an upcoming challenge. Due to the nature of the challenge, jousting, I had to admit that I would not be, perhaps, his best choice as I have not had much experience on horseback. His Highness' generosity shone through as he offered to help me in improving my skill on that front as well.
