Prince Edain has sent me Sir Roland the Great Horned Owl to dispense of the rodent menace in my shop.

I hope my apprentices heed my command to stop poking at him.

Relationship Note on Edain

The High Lord holds an appreciation of my work which extends beyond what I usually find, and I confess it is the sort of appreciation which makes all my work worthwhile. I think he is prone to hidden bouts of depression, so I sent him something to help when the metaphorical storm clouds gather. It is troubling to see a genuinely good man feeling down.

Relationship Note on Natalia

Princess Natalia has been bestowed all the kindness and loveliness her brother utterly lacks, but I find them both great company in very different ways. It's strange how siblings work sometimes, isn't it? I wonder who pulled all the pranks.

Relationship Note on Lazarus

It appears my father has taken to bed with his illness and my brother has been given official reign of the family business. He has arrived in Arx, with his small army of servants and tons of furniture.

He means to "modernize" the business by moving away from the vineyards and instead producing wheat and herbs so we may enter the whiskey and tea markets as well. It is not an unsound idea - wheat is far cheaper and more reliable to produce - but I suspect our uncles will protest the change as old men stuck in their ways are wont to do. I had just started to freely distribute our wines, too!

I am glad to see him, though. It has been a few good years since we've had the opportunity to sit and chat, let alone live in the same dwelling. Being a good merchant requires constant travel but he may get some rest yet.

After much fretting and promising she was going to puke, Mistress Joscelin managed to host her first event with much praise. There was some commotion in the stands, but I assured her it wasn't anything to get sidetracked by. Master Viktarkim secured his victory with a flawless bullseye, and to him went the grandoise rubicund bow Mistress Joscelin somehow managed to procure; a wonderful finish, if I may say so.

Mistress Joscelin has expressed interest in holding an archery contest again in the future. I will be happy to help her if our schedules permit it.

I have also acquired the patronage of Prince Augustus Grayson. I had finished the furniture he ordered promptly and he was quite pleased with my work, so I approached him after word reached be that he was in the market for a crafter protege. It will be a fortuitous union for the both of us.

Now, I have several sculptures to carve. The versatility of carpentry ensures I will always have something to do - meaning my skill will never rust.

I enjoyed myself at the gala with the company of Samantha, Mistress Joscelin, Mistress Ianthe, and later Lady Kima. Completing the task I was given proved to be a difficult undertaking for me: I'm not naturally verbose and I found myself enjoying the conversation too much to knowingly use the less logical word choices, but I managed to pull it off right before I left. The boutonniere I received as a prize was beautiful, though not quite my usual style!

I had to leave before the event officially concluded, but I hope Lord Valkieri and Lady Isabeau get good use of the mirrored chests I crafted.

All in all, a great night.

Two bedroom sets. One done, one to go! I think Callum and Jon should get some sleep tonight, though.

I think I saw one of Prince Gareth's kittens when I was busy delivering the pieces. That is an adorably evil feline.

I am happy with my latest craft. I have not done a wooden sculpture since I was a kid! The glass is what gave me trouble once again, but I think it looks better when it's assymetrical anyway.

Preparations for the Golden Arrow Competition are underway; the idea came from Mistress Joscelin's mind - it is a little awkward for a knight to host - but apparently my stewardship of the Fencing Competition impressed her. She's seeing to the prizes, which may turn out to be the more difficult task.

Relationship Note on Viktarkim

I found Master Viktarkim waiting for me at the Training Center tonight, looking for a lesson in swordplay. I am glad to see him eager to learn; perhaps next time he'll defeat his opponents when he enters a tournament.

He managed to hit me once during our spar; he's already better than a few people I know.

I forgot to comment on Prince Edain's leadership competition.

I didn't do as well as I'd like, but the field of competitors was impressive. Both Lady Dawn and I attempted to best the high scores - or at least tie them - and we both fell short. But why not make the attempt if there's no risk involved? Go big or go home, I say!

It was an innovative idea, I think. The amount of work Prince Edain and his attendants put into the obstacle course was not trifling; I almost wished I could make better use of it.

The Redrain ritual was... -different-, than what I'm used to observing when it comes to religious services. Normally we just make a few prayers and bow our head in reverence; certainly no gyrating dances or blood-drinking involved. I have my theories on what occurred but I think I will keep them to myself for the time being.

Prince Mason's gathering at the Grayson Manor as more of a conversation than epic tale-spinning, but he introduced us to some spicy foods from his homeland. The Prince Inquisitor has informed me of it's unpleasant aftermath, however, and I must confess I do not look forward to it...

Met up with Mistress Acacia earlier today. Gossip was exchanged and she hired me for a project, which I have since completed. Hopefully to her satisfaction.

I think we both left the tavern enlightened with some things and puzzled about others. I have some things to look into.

Also, I have discovered that glass is much trickier to cut than wood. Always wear gloves.

Relationship Note on Samantha

Samantha and I go some ways back. My mother was a servant under House Deepwood for most of her adult life, only leaving the Marquessa's service to start her own family, and she continued to correspond with her up until she was slain. Old Oak were always somber affairs thereafter, I imagine, but I enjoyed goofing off with her and I like to believe I gave her some fragments of a normal childhood.

She has since blossomed into a woman any parent could be proud of. I hope the harsher truths of the city do not make her cynical, but if there's anyone who can continue to hold their head high hardship after hardship, it's Lady Samantha Deepwood.

The Fencing Competition went better than I could have anticipated. A handful of fighters may be interested, I thought, but no - three princes voiced their interest and participated. There were a couple of last-minute entries, too, including the lone Grayson representative: the prodigal Master Viktarkim, who has managed to ingratiate himself with members of the royal family. I'm still not entirely sure how I feel about that, but his participation on our behalf speaks well for him.

But I confess I misspelled his name on the parchment more than once.

Lady Dawn and Lord Tobias Telmar agreed to my invitation to be judges, the latter of which impressed me with his observations. I favored Prince Fergus Redrain to win, while he seemed to favor Prince Dagon Thrax after watching his first match; they ended up in first and second places respectively. Lady Lydia Nightgold joined us without a formal invitation, but I didn't see any harm in it, so it was allowed. Sir Stride wasn't terribly fond of the arrangement - he was supposed to be the third and final judge - but he can deal with it.

House Velenosa and it's vassals made up half of the competition - not at all surprising - but none claimed the top three spots. I wonder if their overconfidence sometimes gets the better of them. I suspect Prince Edain is feeling fairly good about a few of his performances. He ought to!

I think I enjoy participating in these events more than running them, simply due to how much scribbling and constant multi-tasking it entails (something I contend my siblings were always better at), but I am elated that both the participants and the crowd thoroughly enjoyed the competition. In a sense it was more enlightening than an all-out melee.

Lady Sylphie contacted me shortly afterward to inquire about my carpentry services, having been informed of them by Mistress Joscelin. The project seems to involve an entire manor. Let us hope Jayus is kind to me in the coming weeks.

I finally took the time to shop by Mistress Joscelin's shop and have a chat with her. I didn't really go into it with any expectations, only curiosity, and I feel confident in her ability to guide the Crafter's Guild should she be given the position. She is close to Mistress Ida and Mistress Acacia, too, which further adds to her good tastes. I promised to craft her a set of rocking chairs in exchange for a piece of jewelry for my sister when her next birthday comes to pass.

Interest in the Fencing Competition I wish to hold has been trickling in. It is worth noting that even aspiring swordsmen have a chance to pull of a win against a veteran warrior; a saber or foil is much different than a long sword!

The beachball game was deliriously fun. The teams were Lady Dawn, Master Rook, and Mistress Acacia versus Me, Princess Valencia, and Lord Valkieri. We pulled off the win, but the other team certainly made us work hard for it.

I found an unexpected business opportunity in Lord Prospero Fidante. Not sure if it'll bear fruit, but I rarely get the chance to work in my family's financial interests. Likely because I'm terrible at it.

Speaking of business, Chanse Grayhope ordered an unusually large amount of beds all of the same make. I don't know what to make of this... but that put a good amount of silver in my pocket.

Jayus seems to have smited me today. I noticed many tiny flaws in my ship figurines I hadn't noticed before, and my later attempts were only marginally better. I've picked the four best out of the bunch to send to Admiral Alrec; I can only pray they are sufficient for whatever purpose he intends to use them for. I confess they're designed in a uniform manner with only a few differences between each.

I need a drink.

I didn't bother expressing any interest in the guild master position due to already having a job. I put forth Mistress Ida's name because I was familiar with her work and she seemed readily available, but evidently she rejected the offer. A shame!

I know little of Mistress Joscelin outside of her patronage under Lady Dawn; jewelry is not something I shop for very often. But if the passion and interest is there I have no qualms with letting her have the job.

I purchased a silk outfit from Mistress Aurora. I will look like the most dapper huntsman ever come the next super fancy event I feel obligated to attend (which admittedly is not very often).

Little will they know I am a rather poor hunter. Unless they happen to read this.

Another Game Night is on the agenda in the near future, but I need to ensure my schedule will permit it first. Things are a little disorganized at the moment and I feel out of the loop on some things.

I went to a bonfire at the beach which turned out to be a rather large gathering of the rich and important. I told a story which seemed to be appreciated, though I don't think was nearly as epic as the tale of the warrior defeating a giant tusked beast at the behest of a god! Princess Ophelia still rewarded me with silver for my efforts, though I was almost compelled to insist she keep it; I didn't because the notion that she needed it more than I did was ludicrous, and it almost felt rude to do so. Disappointing her feels akin to kicking a puppy.

I spoke with Prince Laric regarding some business with the Iron Guard and the Inquisition and I'm beginning to genuinely respect him beyond what is normally due to my social betters. He is not someone who should be underestimated.

The Medical Conference was half productive and half political theater. The ego present in the room was subtle and astounding all at once. I am relieved to see Lady Dawn assert herself, though; it was becoming difficult to sit back and just watch. Prince Edain was steadfastly in her corner; it was good he was present.

I'm going to go do some research on herbs.
