Relationship Note on Anze

He isn't as vicious as his brother is in combat, but I suspect he's better at conversation. A little bit.

He is definitely one to watch.

Darkwater Reach is quite nice.

The key to getting people to like you is to be likeable... and if you're a likeable person this doesn't entail any effort. If you're not, perhaps you're witty enough to fool people into thinking otherwise.

But the truly enviable people who just don't care.

I have not met such a person.

It was an elegant ceremony, as far as memorial services go. They seem to be a close-knit family and it is obvious that the loss has hit them hard. I do not envy the burden now upon Lord Eos's shoulders.

Lazarus wanted to gift them a bottle of wine, so I had to go rummaging around for a suitable choice mere hours before it was to start. I think I found something suitable that wasn't -too- fruity: you don't want to be visibly enjoying yourself at something so somber.

I tested out my rubicund blade on poor Lord Pietro with great success, then recommended he get one himself from Mistress Hana's shop. Now it appears there is a military discount my fellow guardsmen can take advantage of.

I'm tempted to refine it further, but I'm not -quite- rolling in the silver and I have a fairly large woodworking project coming up. It will be a fun, though.

So many things to do, yet there are only so many hours in the day...

Mistress Myrinda and my brother are apparently feuding over his unexpected promotion to Assistant Guildmaster within the Crafters Guild. I am glad it did not devolve into an actual duel, and I suggest we entrust Mistress Joscelin with the delegation of the Crafters Guild: it does not speak well of us if we vote her in just to cause a riot when she makes a decision someone disagrees with.

In other news, let it be known that Count Max Darkwater seems fond of Mercier wines. I also enjoy his stick figure drawings.

It went well in the sense that no fights broke out, but it was a meeting between the great houses to decide what to do more than anything else. Or about what they can and can't do. I did not leave with supreme confidence, but it is hard to acquire such a thing when you have little knowledge of your potential enemies; they likely know far more about us than vice-versa.

But the city will be fine. For now.

It is my cousin's birthday.

I have gifted him a bookcase, a book, and hopefully a set of good clothing is in the works.

Though I have discovered he is dressed by someone other than his mother these days...

Mistress Joscelin will make a fine guild mistress. I am happy the election went without a hitch, and those who oppose her are still willing to help because when she succeeds we succeed.

The Lord Commander has asked me to attend the upcoming military conference on behalf of the Iron Guard. I will be going into it with few expectations, but perhaps I ought to bring a quill and some parchment...

I have dutifully filled out my father's bookshelf with newer editions of his beloved works and gifted another more morbid novel to my plant-loving cousin. Consider this an informal advertisement for Aurum Texts.

Bethany is due for a glorious massage.

My brother covets the bouquet of roses Lady Juliet sent me.

I am in a generous mood, and I find that generosity unknowingly returned this week. The world works in strange ways.

Mother has sent us one of the pups she bred last spring. Apparently she found him irresistibly affable and couldn't stand to sell him like the rest of his siblings, but feared she didn't have time to care for him with father being as ill as he is.

The city is a poor substitute for an open field, but we'll make due. I'm sure he'll be popular.

Relationship Note on Juliet

I can spend hours conversing with Lady Juliet Fidante without growing bored, which is a talent which shouldn't go underestimated. I am surprised she would even entertain the likes of me for so long.

Women are so confusing.

When it's one word against another's, it is prudent to attempt to get both sides of a story regardless of social standing of either, if you are at all interested in gleaning the truth.

In a just world, where everyone seeks the truth, this makes sense and this is the way it should be.

But it is not a just world, is the natural retort, and that is true. I certainly don't need to add to the world's many woes, though.

Not going to sound too sanctimonious, though. Sometimes an ordeal is too trifling for me to even care. A certain cousin of mine needs to be more careful about his word choices, certainly, but ultimately words are usually just words unless you give them permission to be anything more.

Relationship Note on Aurora

Mistress Aurora Thornburn is a talented tailor within the city.

She also seems fond of my cousin Horatio, for whatever reason, and I think the feeling may be mutual if their interactions at the tea tasting were any indication.

I find this hilarious.

I did not expect to be holding a tea party at any point, but with the arrival of my brother and his interest in seeing our family move into the tea trade, I took the initiative and organized a small get-together to showcase our first tea forays. I am more of an ale and wine sort, so my knowledge of tea is limited at best, but thankfully Lazarus was present to enlighten those with questions and make his sales pitch. It was a successful pitch: Lady Dawn, Lady Samantha, and Mistress Acacia made order requests and Lazarus was thrilled when we got back to the manor. It was like watching a puppy with a bone.

I put my carpentry skills to work and fashioned a tea box for everyone who attended and tasted our teas. I included a sachet of one of the blends served at the party, at random. Those who attend each party we have henceforth may use them to start their own personal collections.

Relationship Note on Horatio

My cousin was sent to us by his father, who pleaded with my brother to take him after suggesting he was responsible for the destruction of a homestead in Clemenstone; an incident my cousin insists he had nothing to do with. I confess I never took a particular interest in him during the times my family would visit the farm - he was always rather sullen and did not seek to speak to us - but perhaps this is a chance to change that and get to know him better. Horatio is doubtlessly intelligent and talented, but I fear his unconventional interests and hobbies have made him much maligned among his peers.

Though... how did his hair get so white? I could have sworn it was blonde last time I saw him.

Approximately 152 redwood trees had to be slain to create all the pavilions Lady Dawn needed for the event she is co-hosting with Duchess Esera Velenosa. I could not afford the highest quality silk, I'm afraid, but they will have to make due. I tried to make them look unique.

Onward, to furnishing Lord Prospero room next. I had heard from my brother that he had put in a good word for me, so I hope he doesn't mind having to wait a day or two longer than usual; there is only so many trees I can slay in one night!

I finally ran into my cousin, Horatio, who has recently arrived in Arx at the behest of his father. He was always a rather reclusive kid, but he has some unconventional talents which could be handy in our trade if properly utilized. Can't say I'm fond of the giant snake he's brought with him, though.

I have ordered Lisette to keep an eye on him. He is less than thrilled.

The mice which had overrun my shop have been swiftly vanquished by Sir Roland, and I have rewarded Prince Edain for his generosity in lending him to me.

I have acquired a long list of pupils seeking my expertise in swordplay, and a squire who wishes to one day serve the Compact as a knight. The sudden interest has been bewildering, but I believe Lady Dawn has directed most of them to me, and for that, I am flattered. I hope my lessons prove to be valuable.

My brother has settled in without complaint and seems to have quickly adapted to life in the big city again. Now that father has completely relinquished control over the family business he has hit the ground running, establishing trade contracts with several noble houses already. Whatever hobbies he may have indulged in have likely been all but abandoned; hopefully, he won't work himself to death and learn to relax.
