I wonder a little at more than one man of the Peerage defying his own liege in support of an exiled, excommunicated, confessed murderer and honorless liar.

I'd say it cries out for an explanation, really, but the only one I can think of is that Abbas Amadeo must be one hell of an expert at fellatio.

A man who publicly sides with an excommunicated exile against his own liege is a man who makes curious decisions about loyalty.

Relationship Note on Luca

Jesters are infamous for speaking wisdom in the guise of humor; for speaking sense in the guise of nonsense; for a view askew from those around them, seeing clear where all is cloudy.

You know, if you're tired of the masque, you could always think about taking it off yourself.

You never could kid a kidder, but you know I would always take a Harlequin.

What even is that argument? We're literally writing shit down in a giant archive full of memories so that nothing will be lost to time.

Memory makes us who we are. Remembrance of our loved ones is what we have left after they're gone. Legacy is meaningless without memory.

But maybe I'm projecting . . .

She was the finest seamstress in the city. Alas, she was murdered a few years ago, but lives on in her work.

And the unwillingness of her sons to be fucked with, I guess.

I'll note just for the general interest that the part of the story that my dear cousin Magpie has been publicly accused of leaving out was apparently that Esra's attack of Costas, supposedly in self-defense, apparently took place below decks of Costas's personal ship, after the latter invited the former aboard.

There's nothing that screams self-defense more than inviting a man into a room beneath the deck of your boat and then killing him, right?

And there is the honor of House Malvici for you.

Look, you could probably beat me up with your pinky, but Aleksei is also a man of the Faith and have you seen his abs? I know that you have, so you know that not all men of the Faith look like me.

That said: of course it was obviously murder, but the idea that it's a Faith cover-up and not a Malvici cover-up when it was the fucking Malvici House Sword that did it and the Malvici House Blade that slit him from gizzard to groin is basically ludicrous. I'd go on, but there's no point because literally everyone in the city already knows that Orathy Culler is the stupidest man who lives here*. Even the dogs know. I asked Peanut this morning and even he knew.

The real question, of course, is not why a Lycene Sword would do something despicable and underhanded; the real question is why a Lycene Sword would be so classless as to be so obvious about it. Isn't subtlety supposed to be their thing over there? Tsk.

* That is, now that the ex-Scholar has been removed from the populace and brought up the average intelligence of Arvum by a modest but measurable amount.

To cast Esra in the role of the plight of the commoner is to miss the bloody point. He wasn't a commoner when he cracked and started behaving like a gibbering moron. He was a noble. The son of a March, right? He was only common when he was murdered because you lot threw him out to avoid being associated with him.

Which is lucky, becaus if Wyrmguard hadn't dumped his ass, his lordship Costas would have just declared war on them by killing that idiot with the Malvici weapon, and war between the Oathlands and the Lyceum is the last thing we need at the moment.

To act without thinking may be slavery, but to speak without thinking is just being a fucking idiot.

As this bird stares at me while I eat my morning porridge, I am mystified at the idea that one can simply get their pet to go somewhere else at will.

He hasn't stopped staring at me all morning. I am pretty sure he is plotting something.

It is human to fear what we do not know, but all things must end so that they may begin anew. I don't know that it is possible to truthfully avoid the fear of change. To embrace it despite of our fears, owning them, is the beginning of progress.

But only the beginning.

We all have the freedom to choose our paths, and if people choose the eve of war as times to behave as petty imbeciles, that is a demonstration of their humanity.

Honestly, it's not that surprising. Everyone reaches a breaking point sooner or later, and at a time when stress and terror grow in even the boldest of hearts, how not now?

Even true and loving friends I have known since I was a small boy occasionally flip out and hurl OBJECTS at my HEAD.
