I have born a second son.

Of course, every age comes to an end, but then, every age is replaced by something else that seeks to nurture the seeds growing out of the ashes of what has passed.

I took the liberty of sending a bottle of mushroom ketchup to the cook in De Lire manor, as well as some whole nutmeg.

There is always a dare in the eye of bold children, an arrogance that comes with the flush of youth coupled with the ignorance of how hard the world actually is. Those the world breaks lose that look.

It occurred to me earlier today, while petting Baxtalo, that the little cat is appropriately named. The whole situation which brought him into my life is all rather amusing, I must say. I have never written anything about it before now, nor had I made it a point to speak of it much, either. Some time ago now, though, a particular Archlector apparently intended to gift me another feline. A calico, to be exact. As I understand it (for I was not there at the time, and this was related to me by another), there was some sort of insinuation that the joke was on me - male calico cats are sterile. (Okay, so perhaps the joke was ultimately meant to be on my husband, but I digress).

I never accepted the cat.

Yet life, winding strange as it does, brought me in contact with another of our Archlectors, this one surprised to learn my identity before immediately reminding me about the cat I was supposed to have, only that she had adopted it...and wouldn't you know it, there at her feet was another cat in need of a home. It all felt too coincidental to pass up. That time I accepted.

Baxtalo is a little white cat. His name means 'luck.'

Meditations on the night of the Eclipse of Mirrors:

Imagine a yourself standing before a mirror. Of a sudden, a rock strikes the glass and it all falls to ruin in an instant. No longer captivated by your reflection, you learn that you are yourself, and not the distorted soul you had mistaken yourself for being.

I overheard a man in the local bank this morning asking the teller if he knew where he could find someone help him write a love letter for his wife. (He received a blank stare for his trouble). It is nice to know that even people married for over thirty years can still exchange love letters, with outside help or no.

Of course, a love letter's purpose is obviously to seduce. If seduction has taken place already, the seducer wants more of the goods. Call me cynical, but being Lycene, I am much too canny to fall for that other stuff.

Woke up this morning craving what I had last night. Thankfully our cook is well versed in the various regional cuisines of the Compact, and my request was fulfilled with swift ease.

My expectations? Surpassed.

One of the consequences of language is the ability to express things that are true or false, is that it is also possible to be mistaken or to tell lies. Indeed, you might also almost say that the ability to tell lies is one of the characteristics that separate Men from beasts.

No one is capable of telling the truth who is not also capable of telling lies.

Relationship Note on Arik

Then the next question that should be asked is: During this highly public duel, which is to say, a duel witnessed by many people, why did no one (to our knowledge) gainsay the bet when it was made? Where was the outcry against it? Why was this event kept hidden?

If you bet your sister's life before a crowd of people prior to performing a rite to Gloria and lost, and no one attempted to stop you, when you then lost, what is the victor to think? What if they were a foreigner with no knowledge of our customs?

But the example you put forward obfuscates the core of this issue, just as my answer just as easily does the same. We could endlessly debate semantics, but I have no desire to do so, as I believe we are both in accord when it comes to the fact that a wrong was done, one that is intricately bound in matters all members of the Compact hold dear - honor, the validity of ones word, and trust to name a few. To see the matter set right is what everyone hopes for. That the Faith is now mediating the issue shows that both parties understand this, and the seriousness of the regretful event.

Aleksei paid the price for the vows he was unable to keep, and did the penance accorded him by the Faith. (And lest anyone forget, he was released from his vows, thus, he is not an oathbreaker). To offer the man a backhanded insult now shows none of the virtues the Faith would have us pursue. What's more, without repeating history in full, no one questioned whether it was right, wrong, fair or unfair that Aleksei /should/ be punished. He was, despite anybody's personal feelings on the matter.

The man himself has responded to certain journals quite succinctly himself, saving me a bit of ink. I do wish to add one point to the 'discussion,' at hand:

Sword's represent the honor of a House. That means they are a symbol made flesh. A Sword that acts disreputably, casts shame upon their House. This man was not even the Sword at the time, but made a bet of something he should not have. Worse still, as I understand it, the very duel itself was before Gloria. Do bets made before the gods get conveniently swept aside just because a person in question is both dead and a villain?

I have biases. You have them. We all do. However, the ability to recognize your own bias is oft considered a mark of wisdom.

This isn't something that is going to change.

It is completely normal for us to base our opinions on our own moral beliefs. We are, at heart, either individualist or communitarian, hierchist or egalitarian. These are core attributes that would be difficult, if not impossible, to change.

But what we CAN do is make a conscious effort to catch ourselves when we make rapid judgment calls without the facts. We can educate ourselves on both sides of an issue and make an effort to use facts instead of feelings in our arguments.

What we CANNOT do is expect everyone to play by these rules. But that is okay because by understanding how an opposing view was developed, we can use that to form our own arguments. We can call out these biases. What we cannot expect is for facts to change their deeply held beliefs, no matter how ignorant those beliefs might be.

We can correct the lack of information, but we cannot really expect someone with a confident, sacrosanct opinion to change their minds. They will hold on to a belief even after it is proven factually incorrect because, as we sometimes are all guilty of, people can be confident idiots. Remember, facts have nothing to do with why another has their point of view.

The good news is that there are individuals in the middle, who may not have a deeply held opinion about sensitive topics or issues. These are the men and women who can be reached by logic and facts. It is nearly impossible to battle confident ignorance, but with facts, you can influence people who are undecided.

Let us strive not to fall victim to confident ignorance. Let us try to educate ourselves with facts instead of enabling ourselves with emotional bias.

Doing the honorable thing is offering the whole of one's self to the belief that there is something underpinning all human life and its interaction - indeed, all of existence. That belief is a universal sense of right and wrong.
