The spring onions are ready to gather already, they grew so quickly but we started the gardens back shortly after the whirlpool showed up. I wonder if you are guiding your students to have other houses utilize areas for food gardens to help ease the strain. Every little bit helps with shortages and ornamentals can, as your students informed me, be restored next year when need is less. The two wards who are your students did well. Now we must devise a means to distribute the food safely as it ripens, and I say we since it involves your students efforts.

Ohh, the food garden plants for the lowers are coming up nicely. I wonder if any other houses are following my example. Silver and writs can not buy what is not stocked in markets. At least some good fresh seasonal vegetables and fruit will help avoid a little hunger and if shipments are restored, there are still supplies that need to be replenished, so this year's crops will not go to waste. Next year we can always replant the flowers.

Dame Leola works with my guard dogs frequently, honing their training and seeing they behave and know things like not to eat 'found' food or food given by anyone but the Saiks or it is something they are told is ok to eat. It is a relief to have them with me, knowing how strong and capable they are. I don't have to worry about they changing jobs or moving away or gossip if they sleep outside my bedroom door.

Teaching caring and generosity at an early age. We gave up flower beds for raising more food for the lowers. While it is not huge shipments, it is fresh and a personal effort and will help a few steady on through the seasons. The twins helped with the weeding. Saikland is largely agricultural based and that will help them understand the effort necessary.

Sometimes one does not know if to be amused or dismayed on overhearing the twins in the garden area. One twin started to sniffle and asking if it hurt, the other chattering away about stabbing and slashing and the gardening wards and nanny explaining that this time of year one is supposed to cut out the eyes of potatoes to plant them, the potatoes can't feel it. It is time they learn some about Petrichor, where food comes from and farming which is a major part of Saikland in addition to their other lessons.

I've had the wards (students in Valary's school for farmers, gardeners, alchemists and such) plant extra food plants instead of so many annual flowers this year. Looks like we may be needing it to share with others.

At long last, final payment for a Caravel for Saikland is made. Now it is just a matter of waiting till the shipyard can construct it. As usual, I had difficulty thinking of a name and so wound up referring to those who came before. 'The Baron's Vision' in reference to a dream of and building strength and adequate protection for thefuture of the Barony. Both Eos and Estaban had that.

We had such a nice time sharing an evening avoiding conversations about bickering, doom and gloom, having a few laughs, speaking realistically about social niceties, expectatons and the avoidance of disappointments. The wine was good, the mood was good, and the ambience in the Black Fox made it all the better.

Some of the first spring flowers are popping up in the gardens and the ice sculptures are now just little piles of slush amid mud. Needless to say the twins are enjoying that to the Nanny's dismay.

Relationship Note on Kaldur
And another of us who shared prayers at Setarco in 1008 is gone. Kaldur showed such kindness toward a child and his pet cricket. It is the gentle smile and the reassuring hand he placed on the child's shoulder that make a warm memory. It was a jewel of a moment emeshed in the horror of war and an example of the things for which we fought.

I had to get out to do some tasks at the bank today and when I started back home, snow was like a thick curtain shrouding the streets. One could hardly see an arms length ahead of them. Golden and Gunther, my dogs, led me to the Golden Hart which was only a short distance away. We took refuge there enjoying the food, drink and conversations till the snowfall lessened enough to get home.
